This store has been there since 2006, so who would have ever thought an event like this would occur. The other thing is the store was clearly using thick security glass.
That appears to be just laminated glass, and it (or tempered glass) has been code for any window within I believe 18" of a door or 18" of the ground for quite a while.

Also, there have been cars driving into storefront windows since before 2006.

Costly yes. But dangerous? Eh, consider how many cars are on the road each day and the percentage of fatal events can't be that high. Obviously even 1 is a sad tragedy but I wouldn't call cars inherently dangerous.
It's like any other tool. It's the drivers that can be aggressive and dangerous. I just assume they are all out to get me, so I'm good.

I used to work at this store, and know many who were there and some who were injured today. I pray they never see this comments section.

We had asked for steel poles protecting the storefront, as is done in several other apple stores with similar setups, after a medical event caused a severe crash infront of the store shortly after it was remodeled in 2016-2017. We were told we were worrying about nothing from my recollection.

Please think of the families and friends of those hurt in this, as well as the trauma of those that those were not physically hurt, before you post disgusting insensitive garbage. I know these people, and they would never say such things about you.

This might give me some pause about going to my local Apple Store in Yonkers at Ridge Hill, they have a similar storefront at an intersection-

Luckily, there's another local store about the same distance away that's in a normal shopping mall

Our sidewalks, America wide, are really badly protected. Lack of large trees that would act as a natural barrier, or waist-high poles that would still offer tons of protection. Whether this was deliberate or the result of some medical emergency, we need better infrastructure. I noticed that in Paris and London, a lot of the larger boulevards had some form of barrier between pedestrians and the cars.

Maybe someone does? Some people use humor to cope … you don’t know. Get off your high horse
You really think it's appropriate to make jokes like "Someone upset with the Genius bar "repair" estimate?" with a little winky face? You should try cracking a joke like that after someone close to you dies & see how people respond; I'm sure it will make you very popular.
