This might give me some pause about going to my local Apple Store in Yonkers at Ridge Hill, they have a similar storefront at an intersection-

Luckily, there's another local store about the same distance away that's in a normal shopping mall
The closest one to us is outside and I'm pretty sure there are bollards. I know there are definitely benches and trees. The next closest are inside malls

Both the Model X and Model Y are Tesla SUVs available in black. However, the vehicle doesn't appear to be a Tesla.

Not a Tesla, as I said. I'll attach a photo from the Boston Globe story if anyone is interested in pursuing Tesla "jokes" like the one an other poster made. And yes, a man was killed in this crash and several injured. Not everything on the internet is a joke.

Tragic news. I’m assuming the property owner (WS Development) has control and restrictions on adding barriers in front of leased store fronts.

Don't some of the stores have huge potted trees directly behind the glass? That would offer some form of protection as well perhaps?
Do you mean inside a store? I’ve never been to this area, so I’m not sure. But the developer could surely (and will most likely) add some type of barrier outside the store fronts that blend with the ambiance and mitigate this type of tragedy.

Yikes this is terrible. Hopefully this wasn't deliberate.
It is awful. The investigation is still going on, but unfortunately it was likely deliberate based on the video footage. Some people seem to think it is a disgruntled former employee, but that might just be the rumor mill.

Former employee. I know the parking very well, the only way to end up where he ended up was to start at a stop sign about 700 feet from the store, floor it and turn left.

none of it is rumor.

Our Apple Store already has the security poles.
A guy I played hockey with that installs them in MA. A few years he was telling us there was discussions and the property owner wanted to install them but because of the town wanted to keep a certain appearance.
I believe Apple store in Lynnfield MA also doesn't have them. The traffic flow there is much different/safer.

A update on what occurred to the injured
Three Geniuses. both legs crushed and were pinned between the vehicle and wall

Taking a life and endangering other’s for an iPhone 🤷‍♀, the world has gone barking mad. Most definitely a deliberate “drive in”🙁
In NZ we call them Ram Raids.....they happen a fair bit. Kids driving a stolen vehicle and their escape car is also stolen.

Geez, this is probably the worst thing that's ever happened to Apple.

Just unbelievable.

Apple Derby Street in the Boston suburb of Hingham, Massachusetts was struck by a vehicle on Monday morning, according to local ABC affiliate WCVB. The report claimed that multiple people were injured and said first responders and ambulances were on scene.

Shortly before 11 a.m. local time, a black SUV crashed through the store's glass facade at a high rate of speed and ended up at the back wall of the store, witnesses said. As of Monday afternoon, WCVB reported that one person has died and at least 19 people were taken by ambulance to area hospitals, with four of the victims in critical condition.

In a media briefing on Monday afternoon, local police and fire department officials said the driver of the vehicle is in police custody and there is an active criminal investigation, but they declined to provide further details at the time.

Update: Apple has issued the following statement to WCVB in response to the incident:Apple says the Derby Street store is closed until further notice.

I can’t believe they’d build a store without concrete posts in the event of a terrorist attack like this. It’s day one stuff.

@arn where are you guys getting “several” casualties? As far as I can tell there is one confirmed casualty.

Edit: never mind, sorry… had an incorrect definition of “casualty” in my head.
