I'll just wait till Best Buy gets them in. At least I can check inventory online before I waste my time driving over there. This Apple BS about not telling you if they have any and if they'll open early is crazy. I don't have time to stand in line for something that may or may not be in stock. Last year I was able to get one at BB one morning about a week or so after the iPad was released. I just check it every morning. They had gotten them in and sold none of them. The employees didn't even know they had them in stock.

How do you check BB inventory?

Well that only displays how united and cooperative Asians were. I guess I can only think of 2 things,it is either that they are the most resourceful in the country nowadays or they are trying to be get a copy of iPad to imitate and pirate.

I used to think it was a bit of a dick move by Apple to refuse cash and limit purchases, but now I wish it was policy for the first few months. I can't see supply easing until the grey market becomes saturated.

Good luck waiting---the iPhone 4 grey market still hasn't cleared at this very day.

Was eating breakfast reading MR forums when I saw a posting confirming that my local Apple Store was doing the early-opening thing. (The store is in a mall that usually opens at 10A) Jumped in the car and got there at 7:30 with a dozen or so folks already in line.

Chatted with other Apple fans in line until 8:30 when they began handing out tickets. Store opened at 9:00 and I walked out with a Black 32Gb Verizion model shortly thereafter.

Did I get the exact model I had hoped for? No.
Was I willing to compromise? Yes.
Was the compromise as bad as I thought it would be? No.
Did I get my iPad today? Yes.

The sales lady who helped me didn't know (or couldn't say) if the extra-early openings at certain stores were to be an ongoing arrangement or not. Maybe they'll do this for a bit until the supply evens out. Obviously, check with your local Apple store and see what they tell you.

So if: 1) You absolutely must have a new iPad now 2) You live/work somewhat close to an Apple Store, 3) You're able adjust your schedule to stand in line for a few hours in the morning, this may work for you.

And thanks to the MR member who posted the tip.

If anyone is in Boston, the Boylston store said they're not selling any today and instead will open at 9 am if they have any stock.

I really hope so because no Apple stores in the area I have called have it.

I live in Portland as well, did any of the local apple stores open early and have stock?

Yes to opening early, no to stock. Was told to try again tomorrow, but no promises.

Target in Washington Square had stock this morning, none left by the time I popped over there at lunch.

I just called the Apple Store in Chandler, AZ and this is how they answered the phone:

"Hi, Apple Store Chandler we are completely sold out of iPad 2s my name is Craig. How can I help you?"

LOL. They should do that more.

Just stopped by my local Apple store on the way back from work. Of course, no iPads. The front store worker told me that they will be opening again at 9 am tomorrow, and they expect a shipment of "something". He said they have no idea of knowing what is in the shipment, meaning it could be Mac Mini's and Airs, but there "may" be iPads in it.

I get the feeling more and more that the stores themselves really have no idea until the package arrives what their shipments will be. I imagine Apple Retail corporate and the distribution centers know, but not individual stores.

This of course, just adds the frustration of multiple calls, visits, lines, etc.

I still dont understand the point of them opening early? What's the difference (other than an our) of turning down someone because they ran out at 9 rather than 10?

They're not really opening early. They have Genius bar and personal shopping sessions starting at 8AM. They're just opening the main store an hour earlier to make it seem like they care about us.

yea I don't get it either. and also how convenient they decide to do this when an out of stock popular item is released....

They know most people try to get to work before 10. That's why they are starting sales at 9

FWIW, the staff at 14th street in NYC couldn't have been better.

They kept us updated on stock, what they have, and were honest from 8:15 AM on. The line by the time the doors opened was the entire avenue length of 14th street.

I got there 8:10, was out of there by 9:30 with a white 16 GB Verizon, wanted black, but whatever, my girl and I won't fight over the ipad anymore.

By the time I walked out the door, they were telling those waiting that they were sold out, try again tomorrow. I'm guessing they had maybe 350 - 500 pieces, all white (Save for a few 64 GB ATT's) and all Verizon, much to the dismay of the European couple in front of me who didn't understand why Verizon wouldn't work in Europe (apple employee was very nice to make sure they didn't buy less they be disappointed when CDMA didn't work in Europe)

The amount of large cash being divvied by the ring leader from Chinatown was amazing to watch. How someone walks around comortably with over $10K in a fanny pack and waits for each member to come up to hand the cash to is beyond me, seems risky!

I'd imagine if you go to Canal Street today you may be able to pick one up over cost before they end up in a large suitcase bound for Beijing.

Ah that blows! I was there Monday and they didn't have any, but I had class Tuesday morning so I couldn't go. Still debating going over today. It'll be my luck that I walk over there and stand in the rain and they get zilch.

line at shadyside this am

Our local Apple store (Shadyside, Pittsburgh) is actually staffed at 9am or earlier for special seminars or one-to-one sessions anyway. If you're nice, you can actually go in a buy stuff, although they'll probably have special provisions for iPad 2 right now.

looks like about 20 people in line at Shadyside pittsburgh this AM, Mar 16th (around 8AM).
something is up!

Menlo Park (Edison, NJ) told us they didn't have any and weren't expecting a shipment. I'm done with this. I'll just wait a month like an adult.

Anyone know if any NJ Apple stores have any?

I showed up as well.....I don't understand how these stores don't know what will be in their shipments from one day to the next  I tried calling Bridgewater, there were more than 8 people ahead of me for about 25 minutes, I hung up.

I heard North Point Mall in Atlanta got in 60 units. Only 16GB wifi only and a mix of Verizon 3G's.

There was a line at the Cambridgeside Galleria this morning at 8:30 AM.

The staff gave about 20 people at the front of the line tickets. They opened at 9. Almost immediately a staff member came out to tell everyone who did not have a ticket that the chances were slim to none that they would get an iPad 2 and that they were not expecting any additional shipments today.

Sadly, I was about 15 people behind the cut off for tickets and didn't snag one.
