I'm asking myself the very same thing.
Everything is the same size on the Apple Studio Display as it has been on any 27" iMac at default resolution for over a decade. This includes the 27" 5K iMac, the previous 27" 1440p iMac, and also the new 24" 4K iMac.

I was also wondering, for those who got it, if the iMac M1, who is suppose to have the same amount of ppp, have the same problem or not ?

The ASD and iMac 5K have the same exact default resolution of 2560 x 1440. I see no difference between my 2017 iMac 5K and my new pair of ASDs.

Thanks to all of you. Anyhow, do you guys think ASD is still worth buying if one would be running it at a non-native resolution (scaled so to speak)?

Part of the price of the ASD is the 5K panel that allows the 1440p screen real estate we are used to. If you feel 1440p workspace on a 27" 5K makes things too small, another option is a 27" 4K monitor using a 1080p workspace. Both would be 2X scaling for smoothness.

Personally, I think a 1080p workspace on a 27" display makes the UI ridiculously large, but it can be useful for accessibility reasons or just for people who sit further away from the display.

Edit: 1440p v 1080p on 27’’

This. I'm currently using a 1st gen Retina 21.5" iMac from late 2015. From day one I've been using it with a scaled resolution (a "step" towards Bigger text option). Since I've never used a QHD or 5k iMac for that matter I can't really know whether proportions/ratio would feel the same on the 27" panel. From what I read and hear I think 1080p workspace could be more handy in my case since I like things to be a bit larger (that's just something I got accustomed to throughout the years of using Windows scaling features).

The thing that holds me back are many well reported issues when using 3rd party displays and choosing the right one seems like a nightmare -- and even then each one comes with its own set of issues/quirks/flaws. I really like things to work out of the box. In addition, iMac 24" is not an option for me because I can't stand glossy screens anymore and would really like to use matte or nano-textured display.

It seems I'll have to find out whether 1440p workspace could work for me and whether scaled resolution (towards Bigger text option) on a 5k display would still feel somewhat sharper than a perfect 2x scaling on a standard 4k 27" screen. Any suggestions?

Using the Cable Matters 6foot Active Thunderbolt 4 (Intel Certified) cable that I got off Amazon for $65CAD. Works just as well and now my MBP doesn't have to be directly beside the monitor! Let's see if there are any issues down the road tho...there must be a reason why Apple's 3m Active TB4 cable is triple the price...right?

The issue is that there are no other 3m cables. In a year or so I expect lots of cheaper cables.

Hi,
one (stupid?) question:

As usual I've just calibrated my Apple Studio Display with i1Profiler, but, where's the hell is the new profile? o_O the profile is saved and loaded, because the colors are quite different but I'm unable to find or select it, it's only inside the Xrite app.

I know that the profiles are saved "inside" the display, instead of the Mac, but how can I load it as a different profile than the default ones? because I usually keep 2-3 profiles at different brightness levels, and now I can't do this since xrite app looks like overwrites the default profile, or I'm doing something wrong?

Thanks!

EDIT: following this video I found that (in order to have more than one custom profiles) you have to first create a new "empty" profile, then calibrate it and overwrite it and in order to reset it you have to do it via ColorSync app. It's a bit weird, I don't know if it's a trouble with i1 app that will be resolved.

Yes it’s normal, for that inside it has a fan that’s always spinning inside, especially if you’re also charging a macbook.

Do you need to scale the resolution or can you not just up the text size?
I've already tried this and from what I can tell the results seem better when scaling up across the board.

For your interest, the old Twelve South backpack "stand/support" works also with the new Studio Display that (finally) arrived yesterday for me. Not the best because the support tends to slide down if you touch/move it but fortunately it gets stopped by the rear cable

I think the new one fits better but it's not as nice as this old ? (honestly it's ugly, plastic and you have to close the rear hole with a stupid plastic cap)

Are the speeds connecting external HD to monitor the same as connecting it to the laptop?

I ordered mine on April 15th with a delivery date of May 23-30. What are the odds of it coming in time? Trying to determine if it's worth looking to buy off marketplace or ebay if this date is going to be pushed out a lot.

Yes, maybe are even faster connected to the Apple Studio Display ?

Obviously this is a USB-C drive, Thunderbolt drives are different story ? I keep on USB-C attached to the display and the Thunderbolt to the Mac.

Excellent info. What's the third image with the 2530.7 MB/s write speeds?

I have this SanDisk Pro SSD : https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08GV4YYV7/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1 I read that despite it being USB 3.2 Gen 2 with support for 2000 MB/s, due to even 2021 M1 not supporting dual, the most I can get is 1000 MB/s which kinda defeats the purpose of having the Pro model of the SanDisk.

The drive is the Samsung X5 Thunderbolt 3. Yes the actual M1 macs support only USB-C up to 1000mbps (for that my screenshot are about 900mbps, is the limit of the USB-C port, not the SSD)

Had my display spontaneously go black and then back on again twice so far. Anyone else seen this, where the display seems to "blink"? This is my 2nd ASD as my first one had major issues and I will be mightily annoyed if it's also a lemon.

In slightly more positive news, the beta updates for the webcam have improved the camera so it's passable now. Hopefully, this isn't it for tweaks, but at least now it's usable.

Yes! I have no clue why mine doesn't? Both the MacBook and the display are running the newest software and I've restarted my Mac a handful of times since purchasing the display, but nothing's caused it to show the new render.
That's very odd. I have a pair of ASDs with my Mac Studio and if I unplug one of them it shows the right render:

With both ASDs plugged in, it shows the two with smaller icons but still they are ASDs icons:
