I hope to hell they kill the audio port. If iPhone 7 points to Apple's future, then it should be all lightning ports/headphones or no lighting audio/headphones. Otherwise we'll need duplicate adapters & headphones for years forward.

Well, what would you rather have MB users? An outdated headphone jack or an extra battery in its place that gives you 5 more minutes of juice?

Look to the future :apple:

I'm actually more okay with this than I am the removal on the iPhone 7, if only because audiophiles are already using USB DACs/AMPs like the Meridian Explorer or Schiit Fulla (or one of hundreds of similar competitors), and casual users are either using wireless cans on their phone while out and about, or wired headsets in the office that could easily be fixed with a cheap USB DAC/AMP.

That said, I'd like to see it remain for one big reason: that combination TOSLINK digital output/input. That's still a huge plus in the Educational sector, which can't afford to rush out and buy USB kit for their new Macs to work with existing classroom setups, but can use TOSLINK or analog. Furthermore, there's little to no reason to remove the jack from the Pro line other than "because we can". On a phone, sure, I can see using the space elsewhere (even if wireless audio is garbage quality over bluetooth, W1 chip or not) due to constraints, but a laptop? Especially one with a 13 to 15 inch display? You'd better have a headphone jack in that thing.

Future isn't here yet.
Agreed. Dongles/Adapters are the bridge to the future.

They're like the set-top boxes that owners of analog TV sets had to use once the analog broadcasts stopped. They were a pain, but they did allow some backward compatibility, while also encouraging people to upgrade to digital-ready (and HD) TV sets. Pretty soon, the old analog sets weren't even on the shelves in the big box stores.

Can't wait until Schiller said that Apple removed the headphone jack from the Mac because of "courage"! /s

This is what happens when people are so full of themselves that they don't care about what others want.

this kinda resonated with me. I'm starting to believe Apple higher execs are all "full of themselves" and lacking external input. Drunk on power kinda thing.

Get rid of that useless Thunderbolt port and get us USB-C, users of TB are more of a minority than the headphone jack ones...

In the 5 years that thunderbolts been out, I've still yet to see a single thunderbolt device in my company or any other design studio. Nobody uses it, however EVERYONE has got USB 3.0 external drives and other usb based devices.

Thunderbolt is just the modern era firewire; a complete failure.

As an audio engineer, removal of the audio jack from MacBooks would mark the end for me. I'd only use older machines. With the iPhone I can at least understand it, but there's no way you could use Bluetooth for monitors, or be forced to get another USB mixer on the Mac

I absolutely hate the idea that they are killing MagSafe! It was one of the few "real" innovations that Apple have had.
In the 6 years of using Apple laptops, i've probably stacked it over the power cable about 5 times. Thats just once a year, but if i didn't have a MagSafe it would have caused the laptop to go flying. Why remove it? F-A-R-K.

That's what they said about the typewriter and the horseshoe. Good looking out to future.

My iPhone 7 is back ordered to October. And if we are to believe sales of the 7, people don't give a **** about 3.5 headphone jack. And are smart enough to know there are cheap dongles for those stuck in the past. No one is suffering.
It's just whinnying by loudmouths with nothing else to do but to complain about a "problem" that doesn't exist.

And if the headphone jack was still there on the iPhone 7, it wouldnt make one damn bit of difference, you'd STILL buy it regardless. What do you care about it being there? A ton of people use it for a reason; because it's perfectly fine and NOT broken. So why are you being an apologist for Apple's stupid decision on trying to fix something that was never broken?

I need a workout video with Tim Cook and his friends edition. I need to work on my uppercuts and choke to sleep practice.

it's 100% impossible for you to sit in front of me.. in person.. put those headphones on.. and say 'this sound like crap' or 'these sound bad'... impossible.

so, who cares what you have to say around here?.. it's hot air.

Instead of buying a pair of $300 Beats headphones, you're better off buying a pair of Sennheisers at that price. Beats are pure garbage.. they do fit well with Apple's history of making garbage sounding speakers and headphones, perhaps that's what they're going for?

I have a pair that I got with my 2015 MacBook this summer, and they're some of the worst headphones I've ever used, I can't believe they cost $300. I have some no name Bluetooth headphones from Amazon they sound better, and they were only $50. Hell wired Skullcandy Ink'd ($15-20) sound better than Beats. They have a horrible frequency response

What's the obsession with Apple requiring dongles for everything? It's not like there is a lack of space for proper USB ports, thunderbolt and so on. We're going to have to end up carrying a whole array of different adapters to connect our stuff.

To sell wireless headphones

Don't forget that the headphone port also doubles as a mini Toslink port that allows you to digitally send audio including Dolby Digital / DTS to your receiver. That is the preferred way since it bypasses the DAC in the MacBook.

Glad someone mentioned this. The "headphone" jack isn't just for headphones only or analog for the matter; it's a digital port as well.

Tried to vote. Can't vote. Cool...

In recent weeks, Apple has been sending out surveys to users asking about MacBook Pro features, most notably the headphone jack. A survey question shared by MacRumors reader Blake asks "Do you ever use the headphone port on your MacBook Pro with Retina display?"

There are several other reports on Twitter from users who have been asked similar questions about the headphone jack, suggesting Apple is exploring the removal of the headphone jack in a future version of the MacBook Pro. Apple has eliminated the headphone jack from the iPhone, so it makes sense that the trend will continue for other products.

Apple is also asking users about battery life and other ports, including the SD card slot. One question asked "How do you upload photos from a digital camera or phone to your MacBook Pro with Retina Display?"

Based on a leaked MacBook Pro shell, the upcoming MacBook Pro will include four USB-C ports and a headphone jack, with Apple doing away with all other ports on the machine. If the shell is an actual part, the machine will not include an SD card slot, HDMI port, USB-A port, or a MagSafe connection.

The design of the MacBook Pro that's launching in 2016 has already been finalized ahead of its release, and Apple is likely to continue using the same design for several years going forward, so the removal of the headphone jack is probably not something that MacBook Pro users need to worry about for the foreseeable future.

Rumors suggest Apple will release a redesigned MacBook Pro with a redesigned chassis and an OLED touch panel as early as October.
