Add me to the list of people who aren't impressed by a double-sized iPod Touch.

Mac's iPad. I won't buy those from the grocery store for my girlfriend, and I won't be buying one from an Apple store, either.

Wow....just wow

After all these years, after all the dreaming and hoping of this tablet, after all the billions of dollars of profit Apple has made from us....this is what we get???

This is the biggest failure and disappointed to come from Apple in all its history.

An iPod Touch with a big screen, book store, and 3G connection.

You gotta be kidding me.

With iPhones getting higher resolution screen (they have to) it will be even more difficult to justify this thing

Do you even know what IPS is?

What you should have said is: Reading books on an LCD display = FAIL. There is nothing about an IPS display that makes reading books worse. At least in everything else will look gorgeous due to the superior color reproduction and the best viewing angles in the industry.

But, I don't think you know what an IPS display is, given what you said above.

Uhh, have you ever seen/read anything off an e-ink screen? Extremely pleasant on the eyes... Much, much better than any LCD screen I've seen (IPS or just cheap TN). It's not about the wow-factor (ooooh bright coloured book!), it's about how your eyes feel after finishing a book on a dimly lit trans-pacific flight.

This "iPad" device might have potential if the apps that start appearing are innovative enough, but if we get the same slew of stupid gimmicky fart apps, then it would seem that this is a large iPod touch with iWork. I am not sure about the potential for that.

Lastly, many, many people, when comparing this to the Kindle forget one crucial factor: the Kindle has free 3G. Yes, FREE 3G. If you buy a Kindle, anywhere in the US where there is coverage, you can pop onto their store and buy a ebook. However, with the iPad, you need to pay a monthly subscription, even if this were all you needed to do.

I, for one, will wait until they add the camera for video conferencing. Disappointed they didn't put it in this first version.

Of course they didn't put it in the first version. They could probably have but will wait til most people buy this and then come out with new version with a camera, then in 1 year or less, everyone will buy the new one. It's so annoying how they do this.

There's no capability here that I wouldn't rather use my iPod touch or Macbook for. It can't do the real work I need from a laptop, and I'm certainly not going to carry both a laptop and an iPad. I didn't expect to be a customer for this device, but even so there was nothing in this presentation that changed my mind in the slightest.

1) How is $150 "almost $200 more"? It's 25% less.

2) The Nook is $350 and only comes with 2GB RAM and is only an e-Reader

3) 3G service is NOT a contract. You can buy it when you need it and then cancel when you don't. So it's not $30 to ATT every month. It's $30 to ATT every month you need 3G service.

4) If you never need 3G then you are not forced to pay for the radio. You can just use Wi-Fi.

Mark your calendar. The Kindle and Nook death watch began today. It will be a cult product a year from today.

Add tax. Very close to 200.

So let's say you're going away for the week on a business trip and need 3G. You have to pay $30 for the MONTH, when only needing the service for a WEEK?

I can understand this being very useful for book readers, or people who need to cram in their work because they didn't get it done the night before (iWork). I'm not saying I won't get it eventually, but for now, there's many more things I can spend $830 (oops, $830 isn't $829.99) on.

I'll just tether my Macbook Pro with my iPhone when I'm on the go (which I already do).

Double ouch for Amazon - I was looking at the 6" model.

Farewell, Kindle.

Any reason why this would happen?

As a reading device, the kindle owns the iPad. Battery life, e-ink technology and price (the 6" display is still good and an acceptable alternative).

The iPad would simply be a nice and cool device, which doesn't really changes anything. Netbooks still have the advantage of background activity, larger drives, more power, not restricted to iTunes supported formats, etc.

It might sell very well, but I don't see this product as one who affects Amazon or Sony or B&N.

Wtf?

All the hype over the past few weeks for just the tablet? No new iPhone releases and the opening to other networks?

What a huge let done!!!!

Thanks Apple....

I'm split on this device. I love the inclusion of iWork, to me that takes it beyond a big iPod Touch and into a much more usable device. However I really wanted to see multi-tasking more than anything. Having Safari open while typing in Pages would be great. I also wanted to see a camera and GPS to a lesser extent.

No camera is a huge missed opportunity. $130 plus a monthly fee for 3G is a joke.

All in all this thing is just an iPod Touch. Certainly not revolutionary in the least.

Disappointed.

Agree on the camera, but what other similar device offers 3G for $30/mo without a contract... or even with a contract? I don't think you can carp about the 3G. As for the $130 cost of the 3G radio, would you rather it be free and then have to sign a contract? I'm guessing not.

This is how I see it:

1. They rushed it out

2. As rushed out product - it's OK but defo nothing special

3. Give it a year to develop properly - hardware & software wise!

4. Rush to shop and buy V2.0 in about 18 months :)

Simple as that really...

i'm extremely disappointed in this thing. i was so looking forward to getting one but definitely waiting for 2.0 now. the frame around it looks way too big. no camera!!! it it just a big ipod touch even the models offered. it's huge and 64gb is the biggest storage? no flash. it's L A M E!!

This device is brilliant.

It's not everything, and it's not everything I wanted, but for the price, it's brilliant. Instant sale. JUST WHAT I NEEDED: a portable computing device that is easy to use and not a mess of non-ergonomic design.

HOMERUN, Apple. The 2nd and 3rd versions will be far better, but this is great.

I am a little sad. I am not even remotely interested in buying this. I was a bit too excited, but I think Apple under delivered on this product. Camera would have been nice, USB too... I already have the iTouch, this is just a bigger model that does marginally more. Pass.

A lot of people don't need a notebook, this is what they need...a device that is portable, easy to use, and not expensive. Netbooks are crap, hobbled notebooks fitted into a smaller form. I can't see getting an iPad myself, because I need a full functioning notebook, but I know many people who this device would be perfect for.

Most visitors to this site really like technology and use it at a higher level, most computer users do not. They don't care what browser or OS they use, they just want something that is easy to use and easy to maintain...well here it is. Whether or not is crap is a personal choice, it depends on what you're looking for.

Looks like Apple finally made good on this old patent application, including the alien hands operating it:

[**]

Right. I remember that "alien hands" patent when MR posted it.

I can see the Pad working for my needs, but I can also see just buying a macbook... No flash is a big problem.
