Great for textbooks but it can't compete with any of the eink screens for reading.

Kind of wonder how this is going to work for technical textbooks.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EPUB#Criticism

Epub is along the lines of HTML with relatively plastic flow. If you have text which requires that footnotes and figures stay in relational proximity to the referring text you need a format that is a bit solid. For example: "See figure 12 ..." but figure 12 has been pushed to the next double page spread.

Good that Apple is using standard format though. The question is whether the standard is up to it.

What an innovation LOL

Anyone who buys this deserves to be shot!

64gb, 1gHz, no phone or camera, no mention of radio.
$829 for 3G version AND a data contract!!!
wtf, this is beyond a slap in the face for a big iPod,
jog on, Steve.

+2c

Reading books with glossy display should be real fun!!!

Wow, finally this foul fart is out and iPad stink spreading around the world with a speed of light. LOL: What an innovation...
Oops, Apple just fell a victim of its own hype...
Best wishes and luck with iPads Steve...

Actually, new iPod mini looks awesome. FM, Camera, mic and speaker are nice features.

There's a lot of terrified reactionary astro-turfing going on here right now but regardless anyone who can't understand why this will sell half a billion units in the next five years fails to understand the technical needs and capabilities of a billion everyday people who just want to use the internet.

Apple just released the first Model T Ford of the internet Age.

Its a nice device with smart marketing and slick design. It will be a success.

It has its flaws but I've never met such a bunch of whiners on this forum :).

the price just seems right, but it's not for me this year..

first, money problems and then the screen (IPS != reading) and then memory capacity (16GB, i bet next year the 499 will be 32GB)

and you know the drill, second revision is always better than the first..

Macbook Pro Update?

Can someone please inform me if theres still a chance for the MBP to be updated soon? Not sure what they have done historically. I can NOT wait until June so advice on buying a Macbook Pro asap would be great.

MBP people, please help!

It's better, yet worse than I thought it would be.

Positive:
price
size
weight
unlocked
No contract (Woo!)

Negative:
no ports (USB, FW, etc)
micro-sim? Sounds proprietary.
Limited space. I really wanted more space.

I'm conflicted.

I think it's an interesting device - but for me, personally - I have no interest.

I have a macbook pro if I want portable computing - and it has a physical keyboard with great specs and the ability to edit video.

I have a Kindle 2 which I love for reading and e-ink is far superior

I have an iPhone 3GS which allows me to do pretty much all I need inbetween + has full mobility.

the iPad is too big (in my opinion) to carry around (like on the subway) and heavy compared to the Kindle.

If I want to watch a movie - I don't need an iPad with a big screen while commuting or on a plane - laptop and/or 3gs is more than fine

If I want to type a lot - I want a physical keyboard (not one that I have to dock or have separate defeating the purpose of having a iPad in the first place

There are so many reasons that the iPad doesn't appeal to me, personally. But I am sure it will be quite popular on college campuses.

Today wasn't anything REVOLUTIONARY - just evolutionary

Can this be a standalone device?

Can iPad be used as the only device? or must one have a real computer to sync/download

Is there any other way - other than the iStore - to put digital books and music on the device?

The tide has changed against the new iPad haters.
How has the "tide changed?" $829, no camera, crippled OS, poor resolution, no simultaneous apps, no ports... and a bezel bigger than the Great Wall of China. Tide seems pretty much the same to me...

Ladies & Gentlemen: The iPod Maxi!

Finally it is here!

NO SALE! F.U. Steve, I want something that walks outside of this locked-in Appstore environment... I dont need a third device that can do the same things as all the others!

Did we hear Jon Ives say, "The iPad is the most advanced piece of tech that I've ever worked on at Apple" ? If so, that's a little disappointing. I was really hoping they were working on something more like the Courier concept.

Is it missing a front camera for making video calls? That's a primary use of a tablet or laptop when we go on vacations. Otherwise I'd have gotten one just for trips.

1024x768 is an odd choice in my opinion. It'll squish/ crop the hell out of an HD movie. I guess 1280x720 is for Rev. B then eh?

Pricing is as good as it gets from Apple though. They really are going after netbooks here.

Kindle

This definitely won't be replacing my Kindle.

I was also expecting to see some announcement of some new streamlined print media delivery system. But all we're getting is what we've already got - newspapers and magazines making their own standalone apps.

What they didn't tell you is how much it will cost to fix the screen when it shatters. Not to mention the fortress of solitude you have to put around it to keep it safe. Probably end up the same size as the macbook.
