Ok, the specs are a real joke;

1024-by-768-pixel resolution at 132 pixels per inch (ppi)

Also it only has VGA out via an adaptor - no HDMI.

However ten hours of battery from a 1.5lbs device is very good.

Personally I'd say to wait for the iPad 2 folks. If only because the software will be more mature, the app store will be full of iPad targetted software, the device will come with an SD slot instead of requiring an adaptor, and more.

However I will wait until the launch for the rest of the launch software to be completed.

It had better have a microphone and speaker.

Edit: Audio - The powerful, built-in speaker produces a full, rich sound. Which makes watching a movie or listening to music even more enjoyable. It also comes with a headphone jack and a built-in microphone.

Exactly..

Pretty disapointed. Its basically just a giant iphone. Its not even that nice looking. It actually looks worse than the iphone. (I dont mean the iphone is ugly) That slide to unlock is pretty bad looking and the home screen is just an iphone home screen spread apart with a customizable background.

HOPEFULLY Apple uploads the event video onto their website so we can all see how it works exactly. Then maybe ill change my mind.

Although I have to say the price is really good, which is surprising. (But then again, if this tablet was something more like a real mac, it wouldn't start at $500)

We now know what happens when Balco provides the 'magic' for Apple's new product: an iphone on steroids. Yes, it is interesting but if I have an iphone and a MBP, tell me why I need this product?

Its a not a new nitch is the problem

if it seamlessly allowed me access to my personal LAN cloud, it would be a useful - a new interface to my existing data. But syncing via USB? Only 64 gigs max?

It would be fun to play with, I give you that, and I might spend $500 on a toy once its out. But nothing revolutionary or even evolutionary about it...yet.

I can afford to wait for the version that supports video conferencing and display of media without having a backlight.

I'm surprised Jobs didn't mention the price points on books in his ibooks store. One thing that's helping me decide between a kindle and an ipad is how much books cost in the store. I've never seen a kindle book above 9.99, but if Apple's prices are higher, you can bet I'll be buying the kindle.

What Apple has achieved:

Completely new computing paradigm. Right under our noses. It all started with the App Store.

You understand that reliance on the app store is a very bad thing for a computer, right? (even though this is just a big iPod)
1 store means 1 place to get products from which is very bad for the consumer.

Definitely not getting one. It has made me want an iPod Touch more though.

I'm split on this device. I love the inclusion of iWork, to me that takes it beyond a big iPod Touch and into a much more usable device. However I really wanted to see multi-tasking more than anything. Having Safari open while typing in Pages would be great. I also wanted to see a camera and GPS to a lesser extent.

I with you on this one. Why can we print from the iPad?

i pad. bloody ipad.

sr8 away they have ruled out age markets of 25 and under who when seen with this will be ridiculed. i for one will say some thing along the lines of
"ooo and apple tampax" every time i see some twit whip it out in public giving it a good "it a look at me" spanking.

fyi tampax is the equivalent of a maxipad.

sorry guys but it needs a forward facing cam to arouse my interest. like a dude said b4 i have a mbp and will soon have an iphone. i dont need a middle device.

Please do not feed the resident trolls. It only encourages more trolling. Thank you for your support in this matter.

I don't think I've seen this many, and with the most yawn-inducing comments. Did the Redmond Washington Losers invade this place or what?

Going by the number of disappointed enthusiasts here, I suspect Apple to get quite a bit of negative feedback on this annoucement from a number of media sites and broadcasts.

You know, my wife is not an enthusiast. She couldn't care less about computers. But she hogs my MacBook most of the time. For just $499, I'll be the sole owner of my MacBook again, and she will be a lot happier with the iPad than with a computer. And I'll be happy when I get a new MacBook with an i3 or i5 processor :D

If you count all the wives, girlfriends, parents and children of the "enthusiasts" here, and then you go on and count the 99.99% of the population that are _not_ "enthusiasts", you get an awful awful lot of potential customers.

There's no capability here that I wouldn't rather use my iPod touch or Macbook for. It can't do the real work I need from a laptop, and I'm certainly not going to carry both a laptop and an iPad. I didn't expect to be a customer for this device, but even so there was nothing in this presentation that changed my mind in the slightest.

Exactly my thinking. The iPad can't replace a laptop or even a netbook. And it is quite large to be carrying it around.

I think its a nice device for people considering an Ipod touch and don't care about cameras and stuff...

For me an Iphone 4.0 is more important because I dont read at all (except bulky Physics and Math Books) Music PHONE Internet

We use an iPod touch in our house, mainly for games, but our 9 year old also uses it for email. We occasionally use it for web browsing and youtube. I can easily imagine buying one of these to supplement/replace that. With a dock and keyboard we can set this down and use it for email, web browsing and watching video and slides.

Agree on the camera, but what other similar device offers 3G for $30/mo without a contract... or even with a contract? I don't think you can carp about the 3G. As for the $130 cost of the 3G radio, would you rather it be free and then have to sign a contract? I'm guessing not.

If Steve demoed the use of camera from the stage on this device he would have become a subject of too many jokes for life. That would look really awkward with the camera of this size.

Nightmare?

Wow....just wow

After all these years, after all the dreaming and hoping of this tablet, after all the billions of dollars of profit Apple has made from us....this is what we get???

This is the biggest failure and disappointed to come from Apple in all its history.

An iPod Touch with a big screen, book store, and 3G connection.

You gotta be kidding me.

But wuld it be a nbigge rthing if it was just a notebook without a keyboard? U have to looka at this product frm the right angle. This is your new magazine. This is your new internetdevice. This is your new portal to your streaming universe! How can you be beggin for yet another traditional computer (without the keyboard).
It will grow on you.

No camera, no videoconferencing.
No iLife suite... only minimal "creative" possibilities with this thing. (Camera input requires a separate accessory.)

Well, it's not for me. I need more oomph and more versatility.

So disappointed, it's just a bigger iPod Touch! I won't be buying this until it's upgraded to stand out as something different. He says 75 million people already know how to use this, but do 75 million people really want a bigger version of something they already have?!

For the people posting nothing but "fail this" and "fail that"... grow up. If you don't like what you see, don't buy it. Simple.

I like this device and will have one. If your expectations weren't met, then design something that does. Otherwise shut up about it.

FFS, people bitch for the sake of bitching. Get over yourselves and move on.

For people posting nothing but "I love it", and "It's the greatest thing since the wheel"....grow up. If you like what you see, buy it. Simple.

If you don't like people expressing their disappointment for an overhyped device, get over yourself and move on. Who is forcing your eyeballs to read their posts? Quit bitching about other people's bitching.

Not interested

Wow a huge Iphone. Yuck.

Without a stylus to give "real presentations" and being able to write on Keynote slides using inkwell, this is a major fail in my book. I am a college professor and I currently use a PC tablet ONLY for giving lectures (otherwise I am purely a mac guy). I was really hoping I could do that with the iPAD. Looks like a missed opportunity here.

It may revolutionize the printing industry, but I'm unlikely to carry around an iPAD AND a laptop to have real work productivity on the road. I think Apple missed the mark on this one.
