Agreed. Netbooks can do what the iPad can, the only difference is that Apple has got everyone excited and pumped because it just looks nicer and cleaner (GUI) but the functionality is the same but the iPad cost more. I'm pretty sure there will be some success because of the "low $499 price tag".

(If another company made something like this, a lot of people would saying how **** it was not "what did you expect a tablet to do?".)

I don't understand what there is to bitch about here.. Look at it from the media ebook standpoint. $489 buys me a kindle dx... for 10 bucks more i get an iPad... How is that a bad deal??

There's no capability here that I wouldn't rather use my iPod touch or Macbook for. It can't do the real work I need from a laptop, and I'm certainly not going to carry both a laptop and an iPad. I didn't expect to be a customer for this device, but even so there was nothing in this presentation that changed my mind in the slightest.

I think your spot on, that's exactly my thoughts. I'd either use my iPhone or my Macbook. The iPad asks al the right questions, but it just doesn't seem to even attempt to answer them. It's an iPod touch with a big screen, I"m clearly missing the point of this device.

For me I can forgive the ugly looks, the lack of any real muscle under the hood, the poor ergonomics, etc etc, but I can't wrap my head around not being able to multi task. The only thing I can think of where I wouldn't want to, or need to, be able to multi task is when I'm reading an ebook.

I hope Apple do what they did when the iPhone first came out, that's learn that what they left out mms/ cut and paste etc, were the key features that the device needed. Multi tasking, for me, was definitely a key feature that shouldn't have been left out.

Wrong. Junk is junk. $1 or $10,000. I'm the biggest pro-Apple person, probably ever, but this thing is worthless. Plain and simple.
Some of you people are so short-sighted and negative. Sure, the price of the complete 3G 64GB with a stand is more then a lot of PC laptops. The problem a lot of you haters are missing out on is that more and more people don't like computers. A couple of friends and I ran a computer on call repair business for a short time and I hated I still get asked all the time can I fix this or what should I get because I only want to do this. The average computer user doesn't understand all these choices much less a windows interface. Go on dell.com and configure a laptop. I just did that for my gf 3 weeks ago. That's the worst experience ever. Average users don't understand hardware they want something that works. Most people just want to check email, youtube, the news, and ebay. Sure there are more but you get the point. This device is for them (and ME). Sure I want the 27" iMac on the desk but 95% of the time I'm lounging around with the iPhone checking stuff out. My laptop collects dust. Sure it's a somewhat of a large Touch but that's what I want. I don't need Adobe Creative Suite when I'm on the train, or sitting around watching TV. I want FLash on my this and my iPhone like the rest of you, but some you just don't get what the majority of people will think of this once they see it in use.

So lets all just admit we were expecting a little more thanks to the rumors, but lets be realistic Video Conferencing on 3G :( not realistic. How ever I didn't see if there was even a camera on it like the iPhone. If it is ready for all iPhone apps wouldn't it need that.

I do have to say it fits right in between the iPhone an MacBook tho and does more that just an e-reader and is way better that a netbook. For it's price I think it will have a purchase here.

Fingers crossed to a huge update for next year.

No Java? Can't install OS X software unless it's through the App Store? No camera? No thanks. A "netbook" can do more, and for less.

The only real puzzler for me is why no camera (on either side). (It does have a mic.)

And I'd rather see iLife than iWork, but hopefully that will come in time.

Reading the (many completely uninformed) posts has been pretty amusing, it will be hilarious to come back to this thread full of FAILFAILFAIL posts after this is a big hits and sold millions.

So is it confirmed that this doesn't do multitasking? Or is that just an assumption since it wasn't mentioned?

Called store and she just redirected me to Apple.com. Had to sign up for it to send me an email when it is available for order :(

Kind of wonder how this is going to work for technical textbooks.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EPUB#Criticism

Epub is along the lines of HTML with relatively plastic flow. If you have text which requires that footnotes and figures stay in relational proximity to the referring text you need a format that is a bit solid. For example: "See figure 12 ..." but figure 12 has been pushed to the next double page spread.

Good that Apple is using standard format though. The question is whether the standard is up to it.

I understand it does PDF as well.

Allow Google Voice app on it, and ythat would be a good helping start.

Also, allow 3rd party accessories for camera, detached keyboard, etc...

Can the iBooks be partially interactive ? I was thinking it would actually be quite good for textbooks if it allowed highlighting, notes, interactive quizes, etc... if So, that would bring the value up quite a bit. and to do so in a way that publishers don't need an app for each one, a nice easy way built into the iBook app, and is easy for publishers to implement.

I see so many posts about it is "teh failz" for not having a camera. Just interested to know what you would use a camera on this for? I just think it would look goofy holding up one of these to take a pic. And doesn't everyone have a camera on their cellphone these days? Just curious...

A front-facing camera, for iChat. Just like on a mac.

Why are people comparing it to a high spec laptop.

Remember this..

This tablet is to compete against the PC netbooks and i think it does a great job. If i was to buy a netbook i'd buy one of these.. but id never buy a netbook id buy a mac laptop.

When comparing it compare it to the netbooks not high spec laptops and you will see its genius.

EDIT: Whoever said it doesnt have Java is an idiot.. or course its going to have java.

Front-facing camera for iChat

Lol the usall Trollnes continues. What you guys expect theres no way that they could get 10 hrs batter life if they used a full OSX etc. Second Seriously a Camera what do u wanna do say oh wait let me take my 10" ipad and take a picture this is more set to fit as Steve said to the notbook users over time it will get better etc.

Speaking for myself and I'm sure most people, the main reason we wanted a camera is a front-facing camera as *every* netbook has, for the purposes of videoconferencing. I already own an HP netbook that I primarily use when traveling. And when traveling, one of the most important apps that I use is Skype (which I use as my primary chat client since that's what my wife uses).

So no camera = no sale for me. I'll wait until version 2.0 introduces a camera (as it almost definitely will).

Hilarious how all the negativity here mirrors the negativity here towards the iPod, when it was announced. Good thing Apple doesn't use this board as a focus group. The iPad is going to sell tons.

No holodeck. Doesn't cure cancer. Lame.

You mean physically cures cancer, or has a physical holodeck. I'm sure there is an app for both...

I thought I heard an unshaven man rambling at the bus stop in a black mock turtleneck that a firmware update would allow the iPad to open wormholes.

Excitement turned into hope turned into curiosity turned into disappointment.

I was really hoping for the iPad to have an operating system more like OSX than the iPhone/iTouch. I'd rather have a lower-key tablet iMac than a glorified iPhone.

Well, definitely going to put that tax return to better use than on this thing.

I just want a more compact ebook reader with high density color electronic ink and a nice white background.

Disappointed., It is a big iPhone (I know - not an original comment).

I'm no Apple fanboi but was hoping for a bit more than this. Maybe the full OSX at least.

Oh well - MBP it is.

Best regards,
BigCatX.

meh

Not a bad product, didn't blow me away though...

No camera? Bluetooth? Why not connect ipad with wireless keyboard? OS seems a bit thin..

In general, cool product, not worth the money.

Btw, this will change our lives you know... Every brand will copy this, prices will drop and every student/business man will use this (in stead of a laptop).

No camera??? Are you kidding me???
Apple has some serious nerve not putting a camera on a device that's supposed to "bridge the gap" between MacBooks and iPhones which BOTH have cameras.

Very disappointed.

What they mean by "bridge" is they're trying to sell you one. Duh!
