And that business is ads? Apple now data mines you to figure out you have an older iPhones and spams you with ads now.
You can always opt out of emails.

Calling a single email with an offer to upgrade phones "spam" and accusing them of data mining seems a little over the top, but hey, it's MacRumors.

Apple keeps track of everyone's phone model for targeted advertisements.

Imagine the claims of "no respect for privacy" Apple fans would be shouting if Android did the same.

Apple continues to aggressively market the iPhone XR, with one of its latest tactics being customized emails to owners of older iPhone models with a trade-in value of the older device and a tech specs comparison with the iPhone XR.

An email sent to an iPhone 6 Plus user, for example, advertises Apple's limited-time $200 trade-in offer for that device towards the purchase of an iPhone XR in the United States. The email also states that the iPhone XR is up to three times faster than the iPhone 6 Plus and compares other features.

Apple appears to have started sending out these emails late last year, but we saw several mentions of the campaign on Reddit and Twitter today, suggesting that Apple may have sent out a second wave of emails to additional customers.

Apple issued a rare revenue downgrade of up to $9 billion for the first quarter of its 2019 fiscal year, a move that it attributed entirely to fewer iPhone upgrades than it anticipated, primarily in the Greater China region. Apple believes simplifying its process of trading in a phone is one way it can improve its results.

The forgot to say " Lower resolution than the iPhone 6 Plus".

Fixed it for you. With a more objective outlook.
Nothing wrong with that either. It's just a marketing campaign for a company trading to sell tens of billions in product in 90 days. It doesn't say anything good or bad...that's true.

What it tells me is Apple is pushing harder and they should be.

Apple has always been a fashion brand first. A real computer user who does real work needs a real PC, not a Fisher Price PowerBook/MacBook/iMac/MacPro.

Nice bait. I'm sure all those music producers, video editors, and photographers don't do any "real work" on their Fisher Price computer.

You remind me of a work colleague I have who gloats about what a "real PC" is, yet they just use theirs for sitting on their backside playing PC games.

If people genuinely, genuinely can't see any benefits of a Mac over a PC (and vice versa, as the same goes for Apple fanboys), they're honestly not qualified to give an opinion on either.

Wow, they must really be struggling to get these XR sold! Remember when there was massive queues outside Apple stores with people who couldn't wait to get the next iPhone?

No they are not struggling to sell them. Market is saturated everyone already has a smartphone. Most people don’t upgrade yearly. So... yea there you have it.

I think the photographers switched when Aperture was cancelled and the music producers jumped ship when the headphone jack was removed.

Still got the video editors though.

Seems they are trying to find their identity.

It probably has more to do with Apple being stuck on the Stock Market quarterly merry-go-round (like Baymowe335 stated). They gotta sell them widgets to meet their numbers. It just seems cheap since historically Apple hasn't taken the used car salesman approach to advertising. But thats were we find ourselves and it will probably only get worse.

Yeah I've been using and buying iPhones since the very first and I don't remember Apple selling so aggressively. They never really had to convince people back in the day. I remember when people stood in line for a week before launch just to be one of the first. Now a new phone comes out and nobody really cares. I never thought I'd see the day where I'd see people commenting "I have a 3 year old iPhone and feel no need to upgrade". I'm seeing this more and more so it seems to be a trend

Why people should want to change a devices that works perfectly for their needs? iPhone from 5-6-7 years ago had sensibly diminished performances and usefulness after 2-3 years ago, today iPhones not. It's the opposite of planned obsolescence shouldn't people be happy?

Maybe Tim should do another interview explaining how affordable iPhones are if you work it out as a cost per day

I really don't see it as better or worse. It's a mature product that now last twice or thrice more than it lasted a few generations ago in a very mature market where everyone has a phone and it's mostly about replacement. For Apple to maintain past years levels of grow the world population should increase accordingly, and kids should start receiving iPhone for their baby shower :)

And for all you people that are just being snarky, welcome to business.

When Wallstreet demands $90B+ in sales in 90 days, you have to start pushing harder. This doesn't mean Apple is failing, the XR is a flop, or any other doom and gloom story.

Big business - don't work with your own money, use other people's money .
That's why companies go public these days , and how traders get rich .

Wallstreet doesn't care, investors have no say, it's the people inside a company who get paid in stock who demand quick profit .
And that's how products get worse .

Apple should realize that the success of the iPhone was in-part related to its original form factor. Bigger is not always better, and it’s apparent that the people are letting Apple know that.

I don’t think form factor is a big issue. I have bought every iPhone since the beginning and I love they went to phablet sizing.

Price is the key issue.

BTW in that advertisement, how are Apple justifying the claim that FaceID is easier than TouchID?

With TouchID you touch the scanner and the phone opens. That's it.

As a minimum, FaceID requires an additional gesture. And if you have awareness tracking on then you might need further steps to consider.
