It's advertised as low as $449 on the website. The problem is that the trade-in value can only be applied to the full price purchase and not installments with Apple. You can use it to pay the sales tax and then they issue you Store Gift cards.

AT&T was giving $270 and it could be applied to the new price which only increased my monthly bill $1 after I paid the small difference in the trade-in and the balance on the installments.

Why no push for the XS? Honestly curious.
They are offering trade-ins for both models. The website shows the XS as well. The discount cannot be applied to the price of the phone in the Apple Store unless you're doing a full price purchase.

They're willing to do anything except lowering the actual price.
Forget about trade-ins, China/Japan discounts.
Just lower the real price that is shown on their website.

If I upgrade from my current iPhone 7, I sure as hell won't be going to the least advanced "new" phone, the XR.

My current 256GB model is good enough for me right now. If I want to upgrade and have to pay north of $1200 for a new model with a fair amount of storage (as I currently have), I am also going to hold out for a USB-C connector as the newest iPads now have. That, along with the other improvements are worth waiting for in my view. So, I will wait until the Fall to see what's coming.

As an iPhone 6 owner, I've held out for the longest time (despite not entirely loving the 6 itself.).
I picked up a new iPhone X over the holidays (discounted), but it's still unwrapped.
Having second thoughts about keeping it. I sense a notchless model is coming later this year.

These emails are customized, so the price with trade-in reflects your current device. $449 requires an iPhone 7 Plus for trade, but this user has a 6 Plus.
Customized...;) Is that the polite way to say targeted advertising? Cuz that's targeted advertising.
"Not that there's anything wrong with that."

"Desperate"

They're still selling more iPhone XRs than any other non-Apple model of phone.
How they are selling relative to Androids is unimportant. How they are selling relative to YoY is what Apple is concerned with here. Fans saying they sold more R's than Samsung sold 9's is little consolation when the CEO has to announce a lowered guidance. I wouldn't call them desperate, but their recent spate of in your face advertising says they are at a minimum, concerned.

$580 for Google Pixel 3 with iPhone 6s, 64 GB trade-in sounds like a much better deal.

1. I'm pretty sure the #1 reason people won't upgrade from a 6/s/6+/s is the headphone jack.
2. People don't want to upgrade from 7 or 8 series because of a lack of home button/hate for the notch.
3. And to top it off, this series of phones is more expensive than most people are willing to pay.

It was clear, to me at least, that sales weren't going to be what they expect, because they don't understand their customers. If they did they would understand those 3 points.

There should be 5 models of iPhone, each one different, but all with 256GB storage. Storage as the differentiator is so 10 years ago. No one buys phones because they'll get more storage. It's an additional thought AFTER choosing to upgrade.

The iPhones they need are; one small 5 like with Touch ID and headphone jack, one 6/7/8 with Touch ID and Headphone jack, one 6/7/8 Plus size with Touch ID and headphone jack, and their pet project notch phone in two sizes without a headpone jack. This is what their customers want. Just like no one wanted that stupid Mac Pro or the $500 emoji bar on laptops.

Edit to add:
I'll even throw up what I think the prices should look like:
$650 5 like
$750 6/7/8 style
$850 6/7/8 Plus style
$950 X style
$1050 X Max style
They'd make less per phone, but I think they'd sell like hotcakes.

iPhone SE 2 for 479,00 with 64 GB or bust.

Don't care for larger screen (with lower res), marginally better camera and don't care AT ALL for losing home-button, face ID or the notch.

I like the small form factor, because for media consumption I use my tablet and everything else, on the go, like eMails, messenger and quick snapshots, for all that, I prefer a smaller phone not bulking up my butt-pocket or even worse: bending.

I'd take the XR for 379 though. (In 4 years, used, off ebay... )

Not want to fire against apple (no need for that, happening enough as is) but they are such a poor value like never before! :(

Since you can't make innovative products anymore or chose not to, time to cut in to that massive profit Apple. Drop the price of the XR $200. Although I don't blame them for lack of innovation with regard to phones. There's only so much you can do with that form factor. Maybe focus on other products? Eh'hem, desktops?

I think its more the thought that "my current phone is working perfectly fine and there is not enough reason to spend $750+". Headphone jack and home button are not an issue for the vast majority of people.

Apple - maybe make a new device that isn't either gigantic or outrageously expensive and you'd probably have a hit. I'm hearing a lot of normal folks saying that the XR is too big and the XS is too expensive and so they are either sticking with what they have or upgrading to an 8 (which while still a sale for Apple, is a lower margin device at this point).

Yeah I've been using and buying iPhones since the very first and I don't remember Apple selling so aggressively. They never really had to convince people back in the day. I remember when people stood in line for a week before launch just to be one of the first. Now a new phone comes out and nobody really cares. I never thought I'd see the day where I'd see people commenting "I have a 3 year old iPhone and feel no need to upgrade". I'm seeing this more and more so it seems to be a trend

It happens with EVERY consumer electronics product. The novelty wears off. The imagined benefits don’t maintain significance. And if it’s a luxury-priced good, people suddenly wake up to the reality of their spending.

The only advantage that the iPhone has is momentum. Many iPhone owners will continue to buy what they know, much like people buy the same tires for the life of their vehicle. But like tires, people will try to squeeze more and more mileage out of them as the enjoyment diminishes.

Why would I downgrade from two cameras to one?
Also I can't run my purchased 32 bit apps on the new iPhones.
