If it were not so long it would be a good commercial ... Tim is spending money on advertising as well as lobbying, "You earned it Tim, go spend it!"

point is that they do want to make a full TV. plenty of evidence out there that suggests Apple wants to make one.

Right. You're telling me Gene Munster is right and that since 2009, they've been trying to make a TV set instead of a set-top box, only they're too stupid to do it.

Or, let's go for the simpler explanation: they don't want to.

the bottleneck isn't the hardware. it's the service. and netflix is a good start for them to make that full TV happen.

So they don't have a service to launch, but if they did, they wouldn't want to launch it either unless they also had a TV set.

Got it.

Hey, the iPhone also has an airplane mode. You know what would make for better UX? For Apple to make the airplanes themselves. The phone could auto-detect being on a plane!

Well, it's not as terrible as it sounded like it would be (that guy is very likeable isn't he?), and didn't actually oversell Siri, which is odd in an advert for something that's not very good, but I have one question - how is "The Rock X Siri" pronounced? The Rock ex Siri? The Rock times Siri? The Rock ten Siri?

Did people not read the article? It's obviously not supposed to be a serious feature film. The video is being posted on YouTube; it's clearly intended to be a commercial that happens to star Dwayne Johnson.o_O
If it were a commercial, why would they say movie?
A movie to me is a 90min+ affair usually...

Isn't this disingenuous though? To just keep crapping on Apple and disregarding all the achievements that they have made, while waiting for Apple to slip up just so you can gloat and go "Aha, I told you so".

No doubt that no empire lasts forever, but if you people here want the satisfaction of being proven right if and when Apple makes a mistake, then surely there ought to be some sort of penalty or ramifications when you are all invariably proven wrong.

Maybe all you critics had best burrow deep where the sun doesn't shine until that fateful day does come when Apple falls from grace. For when that day does come, you can all flood this forum and bash Apple all you want and I won't utter a word.

But until that day does come, maybe you and your ilk could do us all a favour and cut all the negativity and just shut the F up? It would be so much appreciated.
Perhaps you should read your post, wait 5 mins before pressing that Post Reply button?

who said they wouldn't launch the service unless they had a tv set? no one said that. i'm saying they wouldn't launch a new TV without a service. why? because the new TV's features aren't compelling enough alone. Quote from WSJ:
Apple had searched for breakthrough features to justify building an Apple-branded television set, those people said. In addition to an ultra-high-definition display, Apple considered adding sensor-equipped cameras so viewers could make video calls through the set, they said.

Ultimately, though, Apple executives didn't consider any of those features compelling enough to enter the highly competitive television market, led by Samsung Electronics Co.

those features alone weren't good enough to sell, and that's why they're waiting to get the service right before releasing this TV.

People on this forum are so guilty of observation bias it's not true.

They will ignore/explain away the success & innovative nature of the A-series processors, AR kit, Apple Watch, iPad Pro with Apple Pencil, 5K and 4K iMacs, Apple's modern ability to "chew gum and walk at the same time", etc and instead focus on the weakest areas of the company.

"Their original content strategy is crap compared to Netflix". Well, ****, I should hope so, they're just experimenting at the moment, and it just so happens that this area of experimentation means showing the public some of the experimental content.
One could look at the other side of the coin.
Apple takes away useful hardware features before their time.
Apple is building expensive to repair hardware by soldering in every part.
You get used to using pro-software and then Apple ditches it all.
Siri - doesn't work for me more than half the time.
Want to live outside the walled garden too? No luck, Apple is not compatible.
You want developers to have the power to add any features you would like? No luck, developers are hamstrung by Apples rules.

Yes Apple makes great kit but it is not all a bed of roses, especially if you want to venture outside the garden.

I'm starting to miss the days when Apple was just seen as cool by its own merits (i.e. cool products), instead of trying to look cool with these lame stunts and gimmicks.

Just focus on making good products!! Who came up with this idea should be fired.

What you mean like when Kevin Costner advertised the Lisa?
Or when Jobs got Jeff Goldblum in to advertise Mac?
Or when they got a host of celebrities to feature in the Switches series in 02?
Or when they got Verne Troyer to advertise the PowerBook G4 in 03?
Or when they got U2 to advertise the iPod in 04?
Or Eminem in 05?
Or Bob Dylan in 06?
Or Paul McCartney in 07?

I could go on. You get the point.

It's pretty safe to say that most everyone that commented here didn't read any of the article and complained just off of seeing the headline. This is no different than the short that was posted on YouTube last month.

The've read "movie" and actual though it was a movie and fallen over to make themselves look stupid in the comments section.

It's just another celebrity Apple ad, like the many many that were released every year under Jobs. People on here are stupid.

Lord, god forbid someone actually needs to use Siri for something important. Siri is a laughing stock amongst most people I know, its so useless.

Recently saw that Apple took over the YouTube homepage today to advertise that Siri movie. The movie features the iPhone 7.

hey, I enjoyed that :) The thing I take away from it is just how simple the Siri instructions were: Weather, List, FaceTime, List again... - hardly a great advert for Siri

I have never used Siri and I hate that I can't turn off voice control (in iOS9), but I liked this ad. A funny thing around the whole superhuman action hero thing...

Maybe they were at one point planning one, then canned it. Maybe Isaacson misquoted (there's plenty of inaccuracies in his book). Maybe Steve did want one, but Tim did not.

Your story seems to be that, in 2011, Steve figured out what he wanted the TV set to be about, but in the six years since, Apple has been unable to ship it.

Or… they've realized it's a silly pursuit, and have moved on.

those features alone weren't good enough to sell, and that's why they're waiting to get the service right before releasing this TV.

Maybe so. I just don't see how making Netflix an Apple-exclusive will solve that.

The "other side of the coin" as you put it, contains untruthes: "You get used to using pro-software and then Apple ditches it all" (last time I checked FCP X, Logic Pro, Motion, etc were still going, even if Aperture is gone).

Also sweeping statements like "Want to live outside the walled garden too? No luck, Apple is not compatible" are difficult to discuss. I know plenty of people with Windows PCs and iOS devices.

Plus "You want developers to have the power to add any features you would like? No luck, developers are hamstrung by Apples rules." - Well, where are all the amazingly popular Android apps which just aren't possible on iOS? There aren't any. All the popular apps like Instagram, Snapchat, etc started on iOS and were ported to Android, taking no advantage of Android's open nature.

No it's not. A movie can be any length. You're probably mistaking the word 'movie' with 'feature film' - which has a minimum length of 80 min in the US. This was not promoted as a feature.

As for the ad, it's a hit - with a 96% approval rating on YouTube. No amount of forum trolling will change that fact.
