In my opinion, an idiot is someone who goes without something just to wait indefinitely for the latest and greatest version. A smart consumer is one who recognizes when they actually need something and buys it then, and *gasp* actually gets use out of it while others are busy waiting for the next version.

Agreed.

If you don't need it and you think the current features won't be enough for you.. wait.

If you do need it and you don't think you should have to pay the same price that someone paid when it first came out (which is ridiculous), get a refurb.

It's amazing to me that people think buying an Apple product BRAND NEW, 6 months after it came out for the brand new price.. is a ripoff. How? You're still buying the product brand new!

If you don't wanna pay those prices, get it from CL or get it refurbished.

Some peoples' sense of entitlement is insane.

This is my opinion on this BS Black Friday sale at apple.. How much does it cost to make their ipods, iphones, and ipads,.. I know it's posted but can't remember or care what it is....

Anyway selling a 64g wi-fi ipad for $600 when it cost them $200 and something dollars to make is a rip off.. I know they are in it for the profit but if for a black friday sale they dropped that price down to $400 they would sell that much more and make that much more profit...

I have a MBP and love the way it works but the prices for some of the apple products are way over priced..... Now one other poster put a macbook at 899 for a sale price.. I might buy one of those at that price but I'm starting to shun away from apple because of their greed......

Apple aren't greedy (in the way you're suggesting). If Apple spent less on research, development, materials, manufacturing techniques, marketing etc. the prices would seem more "competitive." If they didn't spend millions you probably wouldn't even want an iPhone/iPad/Mac. And obviously the more they spend, the more we pay. If I wanted a crap product I'd buy a Sony again.

Nice theory, which generally applies with other companies. However Apple's extreme greed cannot possibly be justified as above.

Ex: I bought two 15" top of the line laptops in the same month this year. Both had the same core i7 chip, 8GB ram, 500 GB 7200 rpm hard drives. One a MBP, the other a ThinkPad T510. Same high res matte displays etc. The ThinkPad had additional features not available from Apple such as Gobi 3G etc. Bottom line, the MBP cost a full _One Thousand Dollars More_ than the ThinkPad. This is not unusual as I have upgraded both in the past and expected to pay heavily due to Apple Tax. After years of using both these brands & models, they've proven to be the best. I'm not complaining as fortunately cost is not a focal point. However it is a blatant indicator of Apple's great marketing skills. No other company could pull it off. Not even my new, fully maxed out top of the line M5 commands a margin like Apple.

I think you're missing my point or I'm missing yours. I think the $1000 extra comes from developing manufacturing processes (unibody Macs, band around the iPhone 4 etc.), world-wide marketing campaigns, excessive attention to detail, a massive retail presence etc.... things other product designers wouldn't do to save costs. These points = more staff, overheads etc. = a higher selling point. I just don't think it's right to judge Apple products from "expert quotes" from people that only consider one field.

Not saying I'm right, I'm just trying to provide a non-spec related perspective. Extra USB slots and RAM is cheap, the bits Apple call 'innovation' isn't.
EDIT: Removed my wall of text - it was rambling.

Apple Black Friday sales are always pretty lame when you consider you can save more money by buying on Amazon.com and saving the tax.

Don't forget about Amazon Prime too.

That's the plan here. I will be camping out in the comfort of my home at my iMac ordering what I need from Amazon. Plus I won't have to worry about getting trampled to death at a retail store entrance by the uncivilized in my country.

Niiiiice, so, yesterday I ordered a $3500 MBP and today I get a tease about the sale. What timing, huh? I wonder whether, if they do give a discount on MBPs, they'll throw me a bone of some sort, like credit? Hmmm...

So is Black Friday pretty much the only day of the year when stuff at the Apple Store goes on sale?

I want to get a 15" MacBook Pro. Anyone know if the refurbished models will also be discounted on Friday?

Any chance for iPad 2 to magically appear on that day?

Sorta surprise announcement. I'm sure, it'd boost sales too.

I'm a Yank living in the UK, and last year my brother who lives back in the States voluntarily bought me a Magic Mouse with 10% off.

That said, I don't think I have any pressing need for him to buy anything else from the Black Friday sale this year unless it's stuff I really don't need like the Magic Trackpad...

I don't even know where my magic mouse is now that I have a magic trackpad. Mice are old fashioned and ergonomic nightmares for prolonged use. You might wanna have your brother pick one up.

do edu and black fri sales stack? no
do bf sale prices apply online as well? yes
any way to get around taxes in NY? not from apple; perhaps from amazon or other online retailers without a physical presence, if they have a better deal
