Maybe it's just me, but I prefer to have my devices that fit my needs and my needs are:

- For quick and ultra portable: I have my iPhone 5 (don't like it any bigger, I even like the 3.5 screen better)

- For bigger screen and still ultra portable: I have my iPad mini

- For even bigger screen: I have my iPad

- For serious work AND still portable: I have my Macbook Air

- For taking over the world: I have my Mac Pro

I don't want a phone with 6.5, or 5.5, or 5.0, or related hybrid screen sizes that can't do the job as good as the 5 mentioned above. But that's just me. :D

It is not just you. I think only a few people are looking for that 'ultra-screen-size-phone' that can make calls, watch movies and surf the internet and chat all day on Facebook; the only point is that they make a lot of noise about it. I would agree with you: different devices for different purposes.

The S4 isn't even that much bigger than the iPhone.

Exactly.

The S3/S4 has a slightly bigger body... but a much larger screen.

Maybe if Apple was able to tame the top and bottom bezels... they could do a similar thing.

But there's also the issue of one-handed use. After creating a TV commercial specifically arguing for the current screen size and the ability to touch the entire screen while holding the device in the same hand, do you think they will take a complete 180° and abandon that logic?

I certainly hope not, as I use my phone with one hand all the time. It's the best thing about the current screen size other than portability.

If the trend is towards a single iOS product, at a range of sizes.. 4" 5" 7" 10" 13" .. even 60"... etc... whilst initially that seems reasonable and inevitable, could that actually devalue the brand perception?

Is that what we/Apple want?
To walk into the Apple store and ask for a 4" and a 12"...
Is this Subway?!

Does having a series of OSX device sizes devalue the brand? Absolutely not. No one seems to care that the MacBook line has 3 sizes, and the iMac line has 2 sizes.

Is it really that awful to have an iPhone line with 2 sizes as well? Though I do think the idea of a 13" iPad is a bit silly and something that I personally would not buy or consider.

If the iPhone does go larger having the smaller option should still be available. Three may be too many yet two would be fine. I love options.

Larger screen iPhone?

Yes please.

Apple finally gets it. Multiple displays sizes for MacBook, for iPad...one sizes does not fit all.

Hopefully it'll happen this year.
The first step to a fractured ecosystem. Soon, everybody will be walking around with this big, stupid bulky thing in their pocket because they've convinced themselves they NEED all that screen space for Angry Birds.

Steve Jobs was right about the iPhone: the killer app of this device is the PHONE part of it. NOT some secondary function!

It is a damn shame.

I don't understand how Apple under Cook has gone from being the industry leader to becoming a company that cannot even produce a device with a bigger screen.

Tim Cook should stop trying to defend iPhone's screen size as if it is dictated by God and start getting his head out of his ass and get a clue.

Since he has become CEO, he has spent an inordinate amount of time defending the iPhone's screen.

It just makes him look silly.

Apple needs a CEO with vision and leadership, not someone who does nothing while the stock tanks.

Although it might seem he does little next to nothing I highly doubt the board would allow him to do absolutely nothing. If he has or hasn't been pursuing a larger screen size we wouldn't know at this point unless a major leak was revealed.

If he spends time defending his product, it might not be because he's not open to larger screen sizes but simply because he's proud of what Apple up until September of last year was able to accomplish with the iPhone. I love Tim Cook and I think he's a great CEO. But just like every time that he's asked about the future of Apple TV, only time will tell.

This rivalry with Samsung apparently came out of nowhere and sort of caught them off guard. I don't think anyone expected a big screen trend to develop like it did. Initially people believed it looked really silly.

Again, I think in the past year Apple has had a lot of misfortune and Tim has a lot of work ahead of him. I'm sure we all love our Apple products here and if you don't well, there's always the other guys. I mean, if Apple fails it's not the end of the world right? :)

Big iPad?! Yes please! Would be perfect for my sheet music. The current iPad is my main surfing and mailing device but too small for reading music notes. My MacBook Pro is too big for the note stand. :)

i for one would like it if these 13inch screens were in fact destined to go into the macbook range, its about time we had touchscreen on the macbooks,

Did Samsung (or any other company) ever do a one-handed test?

There have been smartphones larger than 4" for many years now. What kind of research did those other companies do?

I am happy with the current iPhone size and wouldn't buy a different size as I carry an iPad, but understand that others might like something different.
But this one size only smacks of Jobs' insistence on those old macs from the eighties which didn't work out too well. One size does not fit all.

At the very least Apple should close off potentially large niches from its competitors. The very strategy it used for the iPod.
So iPhone 3.5, 4, 4.8 or so,
iPad 7.9, 9.7 and A4 sized.

Unless my trousers pockets are made bigger, I don't want a larger iPhone. It's supposed to be a device you always have on you. My iPads don't often get taken out of the house for that reason.
For people that want a larger iPhone, why don't they just add a dialer to the iPad mini?
Also the iPhone range would be;
iPhone 5S
iPhone 5
iPhone 4S
iPhone maxi?
iPhone plastic cheap model
That sounds like a wide range of phones to me.

Funny, i want a bigger phone, but a smaller tablet.

i like iOS over android, in fact after 2years of using a Samsung, i loved the hardware, hated the software and went back to an iphone 5.

However i also went from an iPad to an iPad mini, which, is pocket sized for me, now if the iPad mini and iPhone met in the middle, say, around the Samsung galaxy note 2 in size, i would only need a single device, instead of two.

so hopefully apple WILL fracture the market enough that i can purchase a single device next upgrade and apple can get less of my money :D

Just you, there is no need for 2 iPads and two Apple laptops.

I can see a market for both of these ideas, although I personally wouldn't want a tablet that large. It might be good for artists and musicians though.

Exactly! As a musician, I would definitely be very tempted by such a device. However, I'm not holding my breath; I think it's very unlikely it ever happens: a screen that size would probably need to be "Retina" like the new MacBook Pro w/RD so the device would be too super-expensive to make a hit.

Is a touchscreen OS X tablet possible? I wonder if OSX UI is suited for touch, compared to Windows 8 desktop.

The OS X UI (in it's current state) would be terrible to use on a touch screen. That's why there is iOS! :)

I don't think Samsung had the understanding of why Apple chose the size they did. Just like they didn't understand the purpose of the iPad bezel:
http://obamapacman.com/2013/07/samsung-galaxy-tab-3-copied-ipad-mini-thin-border-design-samesung/

Let me rephrase my question.

If there is a phone that is 4.1" or larger... are they ignoring the entire one-handed userbase?

My point is: the Galaxy S2 was bigger than the iPhone. The Galaxy S3 was bigger than the iPhone. The Galaxy S4 is bigger than the iPhone.

Clearly Samsung doesn't believe that 4" should be the absolute maximum size for a phone.

And it's not just Samsung... there are hundreds of phones that are larger than 4"

But apparently Apple thinks that phones should never exceed 4"

So who's right?

...just moved from iPhone5 to S4 - got sick of waiting for a larger screen and fancied something to play with..

The OS _still_ isn't as polished as iOS but it does a hell of a lot more and Google services have come a long way. Photostream and iMessage are about the only 2 things I miss and not enough to revert to an iPhone.
