Apple Testing Screens for a Larger iPhone and a 13-Inch iPad

But there's also the issue of one-handed use. After creating a TV commercial specifically arguing for the current screen size and the ability to touch the entire screen while holding the device in the same hand, do you think they will take a complete 180° and abandon that logic?

I certainly hope not, as I use my phone with one hand all the time. It's the best thing about the current screen size other than portability.

I'm a rather small woman (5'4" if I breath really deep). I have always preferred small phones because I also carry a really small purse. My current phone is, however, a Nokia 920. I really thought I would be put off by the size but I must say I love it.

I can easily reach every where on the screen with one hand. The screen is big enough that I can actually read everything on it, and when you get older that begins to matter a lot.

My Nokia has a 4.5" screen. For me, it works fine and one-handed use is no problem.

Let me rephrase my question.

If there is a phone that is 4.1" or larger... are they ignoring the entire one-handed userbase?

My point is: the Galaxy S2 was bigger than the iPhone. The Galaxy S3 was bigger than the iPhone. The Galaxy S4 is bigger than the iPhone.

Clearly Samsung doesn't believe that 4" should be the absolute maximum size for a phone.

And it's not just Samsung... there are hundreds of phones that are larger than 4"

But apparently Apple thinks that phones should never exceed 4"

So who's right?

I think many of the other manufacturers are just trying to find a way to be unique in the marketplace. They know if they produce something just like the iPhone, they won't beat it… and they'll probably be sued for trying. So they need something different, and size is an obvious way to make a phone stand out. Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if they know full well they aren't "right" (if we define that to be outselling Apple because more people want that particular feature). They're just shooting for a niche audience. I fully believe that was the plan with the original Galaxy Note: fill a void Apple left available, no matter how small.

I'm glad that works for you, but honestly I don't see how it's possible. I have to stretch to reach the top corner on the opposite side of my 4S. I feel like even the 4" screen on the iPhone 5 is too big for me.

I have pretty good vision, especially at close distances, but even if I didn't I'd probably stick with a smaller phone and increase the font size.

I've wanted a 13" iPad forever. If I had one, I might be able to go almost 100% laptopless.

Same with me, and you can look at my post going back to the moment I got my iPad1 saying how disappointed I was how small it was in reality when it looked so big on photo's when young pigmy females were holding it for the camera's

I have always wanted a larger iPad and generally always been told I was wrong for wanting such a thing as 9.7" is perfect and the only size an iPad could ever be.

I'm in for a 13" iPad. Perfect for musicians, it will replace the music sheets. There's definitely a market for this.

The 9.7 is almost too little to read music when I playing a two-keyboard organ.
It is too little when I am playing a big pipe organ with 5 keyboards.
That would be the only Apple product I would buy as soon as it is out.

If the trend is towards a single iOS product, at a range of sizes.. 4" 5" 7" 10" 13" .. even 60"... etc...

I would prefer that. At the end of the day, the iPhone and the iPad family is, other than the phone feature, the same type of device.

Same like Macbook Air and the new Macbook Pro.

I think Apple should unify their iOS family range. And same for their OSX laptop range.

Here's my take on it:

There have been phones 4.3" and larger since 2009

If they never sold a single one... then I'd say the size was the problem.

But that wasn't a problem... and phones of all sizes get sold.

It's a shame Apple thinks 4" is enough for everybody.

After the 5S is released the next iPhone better have a bigger screen option or they are not thinking straight. Most people want a bigger screen. Get on it. :p

Why are people dismissing a 13" iPad?

Doctors, artists, videographers, factory supervisors, ibooks...
Plus far larger/lighter presentations for folks that do "that".
There's likely a huge market for these.
And it'll carry a higher margin than either of the smaller ones.

(Though I'm totally down with the people who are hoping it's testing for a MBAir.)

... Assuming it'll have proper Wacom support...

This 'iPad Pro' has been on a lot of people's wish lists since the original iPad came out in 2010. The bigger the better.

For me, the 9.7 is too small even if I put it on the piano music sheet rack. Music, reading boks, surfing the internet and previewing photos will be a vastly enhanced experience on a larger device. But lets see, it's just a roumor now. However, it will come at a higher price, wouldn't be surprised if the base model (expect at least 32GB memory) will be priced $700 or even higher.

Having said that, I wouldn't buy the first version of it but rather the second, as I did with the 9.7" iPad

Who's right? In the end the consumer will decide that

Apple testing larger iPhone and iPad displays and form factors, yeah no **** Sherlock. Apple releasing these things is another story.

FINALLY - Apple might offer us more options.

I would love a 4.7 inch iphone, currently using a HTC One (after having had iPhones) and its screen size is the best.

And a 13 inch iPad with pressure sensitive digitizer would be an excellent creative machine.

Maybe it's just me, but I prefer to have my devices that fit my needs and my needs are:

- For quick and ultra portable: I have my iPhone 5 (don't like it any bigger, I even like the 3.5 screen better)

- For bigger screen and still ultra portable: I have my iPad mini

- For even bigger screen: I have my iPad

- For serious work AND still portable: I have my Macbook Air

- For taking over the world: I have my Mac Pro

I don't want a phone with 6.5, or 5.5, or 5.0, or related hybrid screen sizes that can't do the job as good as the 5 mentioned above. But that's just me. :D
Yes, it is just you! :p

Apple has been changing up their bezel designs with the mini and likely with the incoming 5, and along with their everpresent lust for thinner and lighter devices, I see no reason why we won't soon be at a point where a 12-13" iPad is compact enough to be a practical option.

Apple take my money if you are going to bring out a iPad 13 inch model version that would be perfect for me to watch video on

I just hope there will be something left for me, because I don't like the bigger screens on smartphones at all. The iPhone 4 screen estate is more than I need, I just don't get the trend of having bigger screens all the time. Not even the iPhone 5 appeals to me. Minimal and simple is the way to go for me. With iOS 7 upcoming too, I fear I might have to stick to my iPhone 4 and iOS 6 indefinitely.

The OS X UI (in it's current state) would be terrible to use on a touch screen. That's why there is iOS! :)

MacOS X has a touch device - either the trackpad, or the magic mouse. So the OS can handle it easily. It's the users who can't handle it long term, because the human arms are not built for that. You can do a simple experiment: Open your laptop, then point your finger at each of the four corners in sequence. Repeat this until you think your arm is falling off. Tell us how long you could do it.

AAPL stock is up 19% since Cook took over as CEO.

And that is terrible. Apple stock has underperformed the S&P 500 by 30.7% during that same period. So you could have more than tripled your gains if you invested in a broad market S&P 500 fund. It is all about perspective.

And by the way, Apple stock is only up by 12.9% since 8/24/2011 (424.95 vs. 376.18).
