but who can afford the damn thing? ...these things have just gotten out of reach for graphic designers. Hmm spend 5 grand on a mac pro which has no monitor and lacks basic **** like wifi or spend $2200 for a loaded imac with that sweet 27" screen. Decision instantly made here. My buddy bought the 2008 8 core Macpro and then recently got a 27" imac as a second machine and he spends all his time on that imac cus it works better. Macpros is just an overpriced dinosaur that gos obsolete way to fast for the cost:rolleyes:

If you ever want to upgrade your PC's video, hard drives, RAM, or internal peripherals, then you'll need a regular case, not the user-abusing Mac Mini or iMac cases.

FWIW, when my fiancee and I needed to get a Mac for our video, design, and audio classes at school last fall (we're both graduating Spring 2011), I would have been willing to pay the premium for a high-end iMac. Yet, because even a $2000 iMac can barely be upgraded after purchase, I asked a friend for help and we built a quad-core 10.6.3 Hackiontosh for $900. The price discount was nice, but the real kicker is that it supports eSATA and I've added four more TB of internal storage (for digital archiving) since I bought it in August. The two updates to 10.6.4 and 10.6.5 (straight from Software Update) have also been perfect too.

I don't mind buying an Apple, but being required to pay $2500 so that you can access the computer's guts is pretty...bad.

There were no 10.6.5 already.

Last time I checked, NO mainstream software is coded to fully benefit from the advantage of 4 cores, much less 12.

You need to check again. While Logic is limited at 8, that's more than 4 (it screams on an i7, using the HT cores and everything). Apps like handbrake and max look like they scale up to as many cores as you have.

Speaking of mainstream apps, why doesn't iTunes use all cores for audio and video conversions? That should be a no brainer.

hey guys sorry if this has already been discussed.

since apple will not allow anyone to order the new macpro until aug 9. what are the odds of them having something else up there sleves. such as usb 3.0 or hdmi ports on the video cards?

the reason i ask is you see they added hdmi to the mac mini last time.

thanks guys

Go for this one!!!

Apple recycle program offered me $1660 Apple gift-card for my 08 3.2GHz 8-Core Mac Pro and I willing to take that too and put it towards the 2010 Mac Pro been saving up for a New mac every sense I purchase my Mac Pro back in Feb of 08 and today have enough to buy a New Mac Pro and a 27" inch LED but the question is should I do it? or should I just upgrade my 08 with ATi 5870 (if the 5870 fits and works in my 08 MP) and add more ram and wait until next year to buy a new Mac Pro what do you guys think? need your honest opinion.

My 2008 Mac Pro spec's

3.2GHz Dual Quad Core (8-Core)
Two 500GB HD
Air Port Extreme
512MB Nvidia Geforce 8800GT
4GB of Ram
Two SuperDrives

If you waited for this long and now it is available, just go for it!!! Next upgrade may not be available until 2012...

What happened to "don't ever trust a computer you can't lift!" in 1984? Every newer gen Mac I've used is slower and choppier than my 2007 iMac. Even my brother's new 27" i7 iMac is slower and sluggish, even with his faster processor and more RAM. I hope I get to go see the new Mac Pro soon though, it sounds really incredible.

The new video card and the option to use an SSD is a good advancement.

There are also new processors.

What I don't like it the fact there seems to be another low-end Mac Pro. A workstation with only 4 RAM slots is pathetic. They should either offer a 4-core with enough RAM slots or skip this offering altogether as it tempts people to make a bad buy.

I'm curious if there will be a single 6-core with more RAM slots.

I'd probably go for a dual 4-core.

PS: All of those who are disappointed by this upgrade: I'd like to know what would have satisfied you. A little bit more facts instead of purely emotional outcries.

As of this minute, there is absolutely no mention on the front page of www.apple.com about the new Mac Pro.

It's really a shame that, these days, Apple is more focused on shiny form-over-function consumer products. I guess that, to Apple, professionals are not as important as women who buy Apple products because they are considered to be fashion accessories.

I'm happy, but I think it is surprising that after all this time there was only a processor and video card update. USB 3 and faster Firewire would have pleased many. There probably will never be Blu-ray. Steve doesn't like Blu-ray.
The reality is no matter what Apple had done, there would be PLENTY of complaining. There alway is. :)

Why in god's name are you butthurt over Apple not putting the Mac Pro on the front page of the website? I mean, seriously? Go find a new hobby. You suck at complaining.

It's more than a shame. It's horrible marketing. I mean if they have a product, especially a new one, no matter how mild an update, they should be touting it to anyone who will listen. Apple needs to split into two companies.

Let's not over think things guys... The updated Pros aren't even available yet. When they are, we will probably see the front page updated.

Why put something you can't even order yet on the front page?

I'd love to just know the exacting pricing on all options, so I can order my third party stuff now. Apple should offer a preorder option until August 9th.
NO one in the their right mind would ever order a 2009 model now.

As someone that has a 12 core workstation, Dual xeon 5670 2.93gHz, 24gigs of ram. Unless the apps really take advantage of the 12 cores and hyperthreading, the speed boost wasnt as amazing as i thought it would be. Renderman Server 15.1 was waaay fast, because it is very good at multithreaded tasks, but RealFlow the speed boost wasnt that great. Im not saying it isnt fast, it just isnt as fast as i imagined it will be when i initially built the machine.

Yes. Examples:

My G5 tower has LESS USB ports than my 27" Corei7 iMac.
My G5 tower has 2 FW400 ports (both underutilized - my old 20 gig iPod is plugged into it but not really used)
My G5 tower has a FW800 port used all the time as a way to get to my twin 1.5 TB SATA's from my 27" Corei7 iMac.

If I had an eSata port on the iMac I'd be able to connect directly to those drives instead of having the G5 in play.
if I had HDMI I could plug it into the big 32" flat panel out in the living room for the fun of it.

You can get an adapter to convert the DisplayPort to HDMI.

It is hypothetically possible to get an eSATA port on the new iMac, but it's a pretty big hack. The port was intended to get an SSD in beside a platter hard drive.

Yet another overpriced hardware evo without a needed design change to accompany it....all with an outrageous price tag attached. Last time I checked, NO mainstream software is coded to fully benefit from the advantage of 4 cores, much less 12. And of course, if youre dropping the 3k+ on the Pro...youll get at least one of the new 27inch monitors. Am I the only person who thinks this Apple Koolaid is getting to rich to drink? Maybe everyone else has ALOT more chedda than this homeboy'.

blahblahblah.

My guess is 90% of the whining about Mac Pro's are coming from people who'd never need one and will never buy one. What a boring lot.

Where can I find an Mac Pro case to put my PC parts in?

That would be awesome! Then, a large chunk of the complainers would suddenly disappear from the Mac Pro forum.

It's fitting that one who lists all their gear in a sig is only concerned about appearances, I guess.

August 8th or 9th is what our Apple Rep told us earlier this week... And that jives with this report. My group at work is poised to order at least 5 or 6 of the fully specced 12 core beasts.

Personally my 2009 8 core 2.96Ghz is starting to feel a bit slow... Cant wait for 24 virtual cores!

Edit: we use these things for developing massively parallel scientific simulation capabilities... And can use as many cores as they can throw in a box!
