[MOD NOTE]
Lets stop with the sexist remarks. Discuss the hiring, her credentials or anything else in the news story. Its degrading to start bringing her looks into the discussion, and its off topic.

Tim Cook is really impressing me as the Apple CEO in his nonsense and failures -- let's see:

(1) Hiring fashion folks from YSL.

(2) Hiring fashion folks from Burberry.

(3) Dressing 1-year-old phone from last year in soft feminine colors and plastic cases and calling it a new phone.

(4) Spending most of his time trying to convince people that the tiny iPhone screen size is God-given and cannot be changed.

(5) Having lunch/dinner with characters like Icahn.

Way to go, Tim Cook -- you are on a roll and in well ahead in record time to make Apple crumble into a lame company.

I wonder what Steve Jobs would think if he were still alive.

Fantastic move. Market to the elite, sell to the masses. That's what brands such as Apple —and Burberry — do best.

If you think Apple markets to the elite class then you don't understand what marketing to the elite really involves. I've never seen an Apple ad in Robb Report or Conde Nast. Apple positions it's products as better, so worth more not status symbols like a Breitling watch. Apple markets expensive products direct to the general public.

isn't this a downgrade for her? From CEO of burberry to a Vice President!
From CEO of lowly Burberry to Senior Vice President of Retail and Online Stores of almighty Apple [you infidel].

Regarding 1) and 2), Apple succeeded in turning technology into something fashionable. Recall that Steve Jobs hired Ron Johnson, previously at Target, who managed to turn discount retail into something fashionable (think of the Michael Graves line and the fancy packaging of mundane products at Target such as store-brand tissue). A fashion executive may be exactly what Apple needs in the C-suite. Steve Jobs had a natural eye for design and fashion that is not common in the tech industry and that Cook may realize he doesn't have.

3) "Flop" or not, according to the latest estimates the 5c is selling slightly better than the 4s did this time last year.

4) You sell what you've got this year, not what you might have next year. Apple releases major phone updates on a 2 year cycle. Better for Apple to take its time getting a larger phone right rather than rush a clumsy product out to market a year early just for the sake of chasing market share.

5) Activist investors make a lot of noise. So far the stock is off its lows since Icahn got involved, and Apple has yet to make any rash decisions regarding its cash pile. We'll find out more later this month when they release their earnings and Q1 sales projections. If they are planning to do anything such as increase their dividend or buybacks, they'll announce it then.

isn't this a downgrade for her? From CEO of burberry to a Vice President!

This is a big step up from CEO of Burberry, a company making 500 million profit from revenue of 1.9 billion a year. Where at Apple she will be running the entire retail operation of a company making 41.7 billion profit from revenue of 156.5 billion.

Its cool when a company is so big, that it can buy out the CEO of a nother big company, and put her in a "lower" position

ERM no, all they do is wave a big enough pay cheque and incentives package under her nose, for instance I bet apple are paying to relocate her, get her a house, move her children's school etc.

Alternatively how do you know she didn't apply for the job? I'm sure it was advertised, and again the above still applies.

I'm not sure she is a good move, it depends entirely on the success of the stores under her current position, and I'm not sure they are successful?

If you ask me I think it was a telling sign of rats leaving a sinking ship after Jobs death, considering how many of the key employees have left.

According to the Wall Street Journal, sales have tripled and profits have quadrupled in the 7 years Ahrendts has been CEO of Burberry. Burberry shares fell 5% on the news that she was leaving. When she started in 2006, Burberry was suffering from brand overexposure and was losing sales.

Sounds like she's a good choice.

Good! Apple need someone like this. (nice stats find btw :))

1) Will she last longer than John Browett?

2) If she wasn't wearing lipstick in that main photo, it would be hard to tell if she had any lips at all.

3) Why didn't Apple hire from within for this position? Surely, someone there is all ready more than capable for this particular job?

It's not really the sort of job you can hire from within I wouldn't have thought. You need someone who's got experience dealing with retail - which nobody inside Apple would have to the extent an outsider would have.

Plus for something like retail, it's sometimes better to have an 'outsider' perspective on the operations.

I'm sure she'll do a decent job either way.

Sit back down on your armchair and stop spewing nonsense. Tim's done nothing worse than Steve did at one point or another, and Steve had his fair share of cockups.

Do you have some other person in mind that you know with 100% certainty would have done a better job? No...didn't think so.

dont you just love how users of a rumour forum on the internet know how to run one of the most valued companies in history.

Ditto. You only have to look at the "informed" post I quoted above to see. Clearly these people know a lot more about running a company than someone who's been doing it successfully for years.

mmmm...

obviously they couldn't get Marissa to give the board some female welly....so they picked up Angela, I say kudos to TC.

First thing she needs to do in the Apple stores is get employees who know what they are talking about.

How? She's the CEO of Burberrys a brand renowned for luxury and customer satisfaction replacingJohn browett a man who ran a business synonomous with appalling service and total disregard for customers.......Where's your reasoning?

Well said, Angela Ahrendts also totally turned Burberry around taking what was a company in decline with no direction and a tarnished brand and making the company profitable once more with a desirable brand. She seems like a perfect match for Apple.

How did Tim Cook end up picking John Browett? It's worrying thinking about the types of choices people in power can make.

Some people are actually very good at interviews (or what passes as interviewing at this level up). Sometimes better at interviewing that the actual position they are to fill.

“Our retail stores are all about customer service, and John shares that commitment like no one else we’ve met,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO. “We are thrilled to have him join our team and bring his incredible retail experience to Apple.”

Here's what was said about Browett....Tim and the board are easily "thrilled" it seems.
