I don't know what to expect from this. Both Snow Leopard and Windows 7 are on par with each other. I have no idea what I'd want new on the desktop now - it's stagnated for so long.

They are not on Par. They each have ups and downs, but you could get a computer with both operating systems

All this analysis of the invite graphic is downright silly -- Apple has never hidden detailed complex hints in the graphics for its events. Seriously, look at any of the previous invites -- is there anything there that, in hindsight, we would say "Wow! This tiny aspect of the image hinted at that totally unexpected feature Steve announced!"

Yes, the event will be about the Mac (it says so right in the wording), and yes, it is pretty clear that the next OS will be named "Lion". But honestly, that's all that is explicitly there. Anything else and you might as well be looking for shapes in clouds.

I don't know if anyone noticed this but...

We all know what the Lion means. OS X Lion, period. For the next paragraph, pretend it's not there, but that there's just white instead.

Focus on the apple. Not only it is ridiculously thin (clue 1), but imagine for a second that you take it off. You'd be left with what looks like a closed Mac Laptop seen from above, right? The aluminum, the white apple in the middle... Now focus for a second on the relative dimensions: the apple is way too big for that to represent a 15'' or a 17''. Even a 13'' would be misrepresented by that. However, if you imagine a 11'' laptop, the apple might just have that size, when in comparison to the rest of the laptop. (clue 2). Another thing in favour of it being a laptop are the corners: two sharp ones, and two round ones (clue 3).

All of these would fit as clues for the much-rumored 11.6'' Macbook Air.

Also, the spinning apple could be a reference to either 3D or the iMac patents with moveable screen, but that'd be sort of a longer shot.

Omg LOL
Dude it's just an invitation poster!
The only thing it "covers" is an Lion, which i guess we all noticed at the first look on

Fingers crossed for a cool MBA :D

What all big cats are left besides Cougar?

There's still the "clouded leopard" of the genus "neofelis"… :D

Which TBH should have been the current one. How many programs support OpenCL again? Can you use the fingers on both hands already?

Hyenas are of the dog family, not of the cat family.

Uh, actually, they are more closely related to the cat family than the dog family. Hyenas are just wierd honestly.

Anyways, they already picked my favorite cats as names (puma, tiger, snow leopard) and the Lion honestly has to be my least favorite cat :(.

That being said, I'll be curious as to what they add. I doubt it will make a huge difference to me, last time they put in a feature that had me actually wanting to bother upgrading was Time Machine. Otherwise, I've been happy with Snow Leopard and Tiger.

Remember on the invite for the iPod event this year there was a guitar on the invite - cue lots of speculation about new versions of the Garage Band (??) software, a new data centre to serve up lots more music, etc. And, actually, it referred mostly to some post-announcement entertainment.

I therefore predict the circus will be performing afternthe event next week :D

I swear they did this because I finally gave in an ordered a Macbook pro yesterday. Well somebody had to take one for the team I guess :)

If 10.7 is lion then does it mean it's also the end of the line for OS X because the lion is the king of all beasts. You can't top it. Hmmm.

Well...Apparently, you're not married :D

there is one Big Cat that does top the Lion: the Lioness.

Asking if it fits Apple's plans, while the Lion is flashy & loud, it is the Lioness who is sleeker, takes care of the cubs ... and generally gets the work done: a common hunting strategy is that the male does his thing by being loud to flush prey to the females who are waiting in ambush.

Or a 7" iPad-lette.

Interesting observations: the rounded & non-rounded corners in particular serve to emphasize that there's more symbology here than initially meets the eye, and I think you're right that they're alluding to something in the clamshell notebook range, and we know that schedule-wise, a MBA replacement would be a prime candidate.

How did we miss this?!?

If you re-arrange the letters on the invite you get: "Bathmat eCock" (my favorite rejected iPhone app, btw)

Clearly Apple is going to make an announcement easing restrictions on adult apps (and apps for lions.)
:p

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/532.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0.5 Mobile/8B117 Safari/6531.22.7)

Im not one to make massive speculations, but that logo looks distinctly.... 3D to me.

And that Apple seems to rotate with a touch of a finger...

Why would we want a 3d computer? I dont get it...

also- Am I the only person that thinks a touchscreen MBP or MB is much more likely that a touch screen iMac?

Sitting at my desk, looking at my 24" imac at the moment, I cant for the life of me imagine how I would use ANY touchscreen computer at a desk. Even if it is the form factor we saw from the patent drawings, I don't know how I would make it work while still being able to view the screen adequately.

That being said, I am pumped for the event! PLEASE do something with aperture!

I would also like to be able to "cut" things in the finder for once in my life.

Actually it has, and it's a common exercise for users to search for hints. Such as the past iOS invitation posters, for example.

He meant a new event that focuses on OSX, not an event that focuses on a "new OSX".

There is little need for a separate Mac OS X only event. No new announcement and features of Mac OS X means no WWDC coverage. If put a new Mac OS X version out in alpha/beta then will get coverage at WWDC. The causality is all whacked here. At those other WWDCs where there was more WWDC coverage for Mac OS X there were also previously announced (or just recently, several months, released ) Mac OS X versions.

If anything there there is a need for is a decoupling of the Steve Job keynote circus show from the WWDC convention. Sell that as a separate ticket and hold it in Moscone North. Can fit 2-2.5 times as many people in for that. There is no problem if make arrangements to host more developers next year. Apple was sitting in about 1/3 of the convention space in SF. And 1/4 of the space if loop in the surrounding hotel meeting rooms.

There is way too much overlap in tech (shared Cocoa foundations , tools , etc. ) to hold a seperate conference. Just need to let in more developers and hold a few more sessions. It is a time killer for apple ( can't send large bulk of engineers up to SF twice a year for week.) and developers ( few are going to fly in twice a year. ) to run two events separated by a block of time.

If afraid that iPhone developers will just blow out expansion of attendees then hold different sub events, but it would still be WWDC. So registration to event would break down into four categories.

Keynote circus show. [couple of hundred ]
WWDC Mac OS X and common tracks. [ usual price ]
WWDC iOS and common tracks. [ usual price ]
WWDC all access super duper pass [ 1.5-2x usual price. ]

the middle two can watch simucast of circus show in another room ( Moscone West and/or yerba beurna if want ). Most of the serious developers will pass as it is pretty much a real technical content free show.

So Apple is making the next Lion King movie instead of Disney? The return of SIMBA is near...wooo. :D

Opening line from S Jobs:
"Lol jks, we are talkin about iPad today"

My predictions:
- iLife '11 (maybe iPad equilivents)
- OSX Tiger
- iWork '11
- Complete redesign of MacBook Pros

Apple's timing and marketing expertise never ceases to amaze me.

What a great way to divert the focus away from the fragile glass iPhones.

I hope those of us who have been very loyal Apple Computer users, will see something meaningful this time around.
