Apple's timing and marketing expertise never ceases to amaze me.

What a great way to divert the focus away from the fragile glass iPhones.

I hope those of us who have been very loyal Apple Computer users, will see something meaningful this time around.

If Apple announced a free Macbook Air for everybody, people would moan, groin, and complain on this forum because it wasn't the color they wanted or that they didn't get two of them. You and I both know no matter what happens, people will get upset over something that either was or wasn't announced at the event.

Some folks don't seem to understand that, since this is the first announcement of 10.7 Lion, it's not going to be shipping for at least six months and probably close to a full year. Might want to scale back excitement a bit.

I wouldn't be surprised if the only laptop to see a spec bump at/for this event is the MBA. The data in the MacRumors Buyer's Guide suggests Apple is interested in stretching the distance between updates for its notebooks, not contracting it. We just had an update in April, and the typical window looks to be in the 8-10 month range. It's only been barely six.

An update in mid-February would set up a refresh in October 2011 for Lion.

Wooooow. It is definitely about time. Not that I wasn't happy with snow leopard, but I didn't really benefit much from it. Not much was faster, I just got a pretty wallpaper >.<

I'm hoping for some mega innovation and UI & GUI changes here :) I want something a bit different

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/532.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0.5 Mobile/8B117 Safari/6531.22.7)

You think they chose lion because they can do the same the thing they did with leopard? Create an update or new version that follows with a similar title? Leopard ---> snow leopard. Lion ---> mountain lion (I.e.) just a thought.

Yes I hope this whole IOS stuff just blows over. I'm seriously hoping Google's Android and Microsoft run Apple over bad enough that Apple calls it quits and puts their engineers back to work on the Mac.

What do you want to bet they announce so triveal thing like a new screen size notebook or a 0.2 Ghz speed bump?

But maybe with the lion they will push Mac OS X to do some truely new things. Like finally decouple the screen from the computer the app runs on (like X11) Or maybe some other kind of transparent "network computing" where your desktop follows you if you own more than one Mac.

But my gues is a simple IOS emulator that runs under Mac OS so they can sell you iPhone Apps on your mac.

If 10.7 is previewed, please have the following:

1.) Full resolution independence
2.) New UI
3.) New Finder
4.) New File System

Finally

Lion, took me long enough to work out what cat they were going to call it, i hope it has some revolutionary feature to whip windows 7 ass, and windows 8 which may be next year. I am also looking forward to refreshed MacBook's since my black one is on its last legs. and the MacBook Pro was horrible. I do hope 3G Compatibility would be a nice feature on a rumoured 12 inch Macbook. One thing i despise of is the TrackPads they are putting on there new portables. they are very annoying.

:apple:

Wow, so from the looks of things yesterday, today was going to be a crappy day. But then my profs cancelled classes today ahead of fall break so no critiques, and then I noticed that my new HDTV was out for delivery a day early! And now OS 10.7 Lion out of the blue?!? Holy crap I'm having a great day right now!

Everyone is excited about the lion, but I'm more excited about the title "Back to the Mac". I hope it is a sign of more attention to the original "core" products of Apple, hardware as well as the software. I love my iPad and iPhone, but I don't want focus to be lost on more pro-sumer oriented stuff. Very curious to see what will hopefully be a non-iPhone or iPad event.

Glimpse of the Future

For what it's worth, here's my interpretation of the invite and likely announcements:

1) The half-revealed Lion simply means that this event will offer a preview/glimpse of some of the features of the next OS X release, which will of course be called Lion.

2) The aluminum and the mention of Mac in the tagline, plus what we know of typical Apple refresh cycles, means this event will focus on Mac hardware (laptop) lineup.

3) We will see the intro of the new MBA. As speculated, this will likely include a new physical design (even thinner), I'd suggest SSD as default, possibly built-in 3G. I feel like the original MBA was Apple's "proof of concept" machine. A lot of the technologies and design techniques which were first introduced in the MBA subsequently were used in the full range of laptops. Hence, Apple tries out this stuff on a small segment of ulta-premium consumers before adapting them for the (relatively) more mass-market segments of its customer base.

4) I think the "Back to the Mac" is both a subtle acknowledgement of/response to the criticsm that Apple has focused too much on iOS/idevices AND a reference to integration of Lion with cloud computing. Think about the "back to MY mac" feature in Leopard - access and control your mac and your data from anywhere (provided you're within the Apple ecosystem). And think about the new Apple data center, move to cloud-based applications (inc itunes). And then think about the recent Apple hiring for developers to work on revolutionary OS architectures which are related to HTTP/large web.
I would speculate we'll see some sort of very deep integration between the Lion OS and HTTP/cloud, and that this event will be the first preview of some of the features that will enable.

I don't know what those features will be, but I am sure this very deep integration of the OS and the web is the next major development from Apple in terms of their technical strategy.

Hate to break it to you guys, but there won't be an OS11. We'll be using a desktop iteration of iOS eventually.

The only people parroting this constantly are people who know virtually nothing about Apple, their OS, their product line and technology in general.

Even Microsoft has a different OS for "computers" and another for mobile space.

Merging the two doesn't even make sense. The only way OS X is going away (or a future iteration of it) is if Apple drops the entire Mac/Server line. That's IT.

Holy crap- news about actual Apple computers and no some stupid iOS related device! :D

I wonder if 10.7 will be the main topic of discussion.

Everyone is excited about the lion...

Pay no attention to the LION behind the curta... err Apple.

  • iLife, now with all apps fully database enabled
  • iLife server, NAS-like solution incorporating TM functionality
  • The first MacBook running an AMD processor
  • New MBA
  • New OS

So it'll be like the lion, the witch and the wardrobe.

More like Jan 2012 with Apple's recent track record. Plus the obligatory 6-8 months waiting until 10.7.5 when the OS is actually functional. No need to start holding breath just yet.

Who here Agrees that The MacBook Air. and the Pro were on a "dont buy" basis?
