I am disappointed at the potential loss of the SD as well as other common connectivity options. I always assumed the "pro" was an acknowledgement to those of us needing a versatile workhorse platform. Seems a simple $35 raspberry pi could very well provide more built-in connectivity options than the MBP.

Touch screen will be seen as a gimmick by many but may slowly become more functional.
The SD card slot removal is not confirmed, and they won't be removing the headphone jack this year (thankfully). USB A will be removed because they see USB C as the replacement for it, so it makes no sense for Apple to include an old version of that port on their futuristic notebook.
As for thinness, it's Apple and not that nobody puts function over Jony Ives vision, we'll end up with a portless, non-mechanical notebook in under 10 years. I think any thinner than these new MBPs and nobody will really care.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but i don't think you've tried the Force Touch trackpads (or maybe even not noticed)... it is not just a 'vibration', it feels like a mechanical click.

You're right in the sense that Apple are losing their focus. Part of the reason is the fact that Tim Cook leaves the departments to do what they do and work together rather than being strict about what the product should and shouldn't be.

I mean, cmon, I think it'd be silly to think I'd complain about the trackpad without actually having used it. So yea, and no it does not feel mechanical at all. And when using it to see how well it'd do in music programs, it failed severely.

See the thing about the USB, is that so many hard drives, thumb drives and other things use USB, that if someone forgets an adapter, they are screwed. Especially college kids. That is one thing I think needs to stay. I'm all for some adapters, but some things need to stay because adapter get forgotten and lost, and the a majority of people will have issues without an adapter for the headphone jack, and the USB.

I get it though. Apple is trying to move one to the way of the future, but when I think of my children's future, I don't imagine killing my grandparents. Know what I mean?

Makes me sad to say this, but...
I worried that they reshuffled original earnings report date, and then made the Apple event date 2 days after that rescheduled earnings report date, all in order to provide some positive news following a uninspiring report.

It seems to me like it should be a good report. It's just that the scheduling smells fishy.

My initial reaction to that news was the same...after more pondering I imagine it had something to do with the MSFT event. MSFT announced 26th, and if Apple wanted to go after them they had to move the schedule of the Mac event to the 27th, therefore they were forced to bump the earnings call.

'Cause Apple wants you using your iPhone to take pictures, not your camera. This is the new Apple. "We only support ourselves."

A tiny usb card reader vs. more room for battery? I'll take more battery any day.

Besides, my DSLR uses compact flash.

Couldn't agree more, and I hope you're part of a silent majority. In the past, Apple was always happy to support serious users as well as those that did nothing but web browse. No way a laptop is more valuable because it has less ports and no function keys. Question is when Apple will feel the push back - they already admitted the new Macbook "wasn't for everybody". Reminds me of countless times car companies tied to sell the idea of a "commuter car". But people never went for it - they wanted a car you could use for everything, even if they mostly just used it for commuting.

I'm trying to give Apple the benefit of the doubt - that the people designing products now are not users of those products and so have no idea what makes a computer "good" anymore. That is, it's ignorance, not arrogance. It's totally fine to try to put in some fancy novelty that's hard for other companies to copy, but keep the functionality too. You didn't hear the people in this forum yelling "come on, Apple - it's been 4 years and Mac still have function keys! Get with the OLED function keys already or I'm switching to an XPS." Heck, I never even saw a post like "can you just make a thinner laptop already before I finally just give up and buy something else."

But I'm still really excited that after 4 years Apple is finally updating Macbook Pros, and there's a chance they'll have modern processors and increased capacities. Otherwise, I'll just settle for a 2015 with an external hard drive.

Ha, yea, those posts would be funny and it's true; Nobody says that.

I'm excited as well, but mainly because I think the rumors are wrong. The more technology advances, the more they get the predictions wrong. So I personally think it will be more balanced for the macbook pro. I'm betting on USBc, USB, thunderbolt, 3.5mm jack, and SD card slot, no touch screen, and not much thinner, if at all. The other Macs, I don't care about.

Otherwise, this will be one Apple that fell far from the tree.

This is the first MBP I don't pre-order sight unseen, unfortunately. Maybe if the keyboard isn't horrible like the MB's I might upgrade at some point.

I'm excited the event is happening and looking forward to finally upgrading my macbook, but super bummed that they are going to leave out the SD Card slot :(
Yeah it's a bummer but SD cards may be about to change again. Samsung had a new super high speed kind that was rumored to go with the Note 7 but then didn't materialize as far as I know. Anyway that's one where I can understand why Apple left it out. I don't like it because we have a lot of devices that use SD cards...mostly digital cameras. But...I can understand this one.

Daily kernel panics on my early 2011 MBP, just hold out for a couple more weeks...
Mine was doing the same thing; it's a known problem in the video section of the logic board. Take it in to an Apple store and they'll replace the logic board FREE. Runs like new now. Put in an SSD and I'm good for a few more years.

It's possible you have some other problem, but it's really worth your time to take it in.

There oughta be - after all, the Mac Mini is the ideal modern laptop - it comes with nothing and you plug everything into it, even a keyboard and display! Even the upcoming Macbook Pro still has an integrated display, so the mac Mini still has the edge. :)
Nnnnnn so true it actually hurts.

Hallelujah! But I will reserve additional enthusiasm until I see what they release. Not gonna get excited about a $2500 port-neutuered pro laptop.

I don't think getting rid of the HDMI port is a good idea. I use mine all the time for plugging into external displays, TVs, and projectors. Literally everything works with HDMI. The other ports I could maybe leave behind if they include adapters in the box.

MacBookPro Retina, ya brought us Apple users back from having to use adapters in conference rooms for a few years since the Pismo and its standard VGA port left us over ten years prior. We hardly knew ya.:)

Uh, no — They're Thunderbolt 3/USB-C ports. I don't know about the others but there will be absolutely zero USB-A ports on the new Macs.

Have been interested in what a refresh would bring for a while.

Will stick with my current rMBP if the elimination of direct USB-A, HDMI, SD, and headphone access occurs. That's not the refresh I seek.

I wouldn't get my hopes too high about the new Mac Mini just yet. Chances are extremely high that it won't get mentioned at all come end of October. Some day, perhaps. But not right now.

You honestly think they will do a USB C and USB A port on the same machine? You have to be kidding me. There is absolutely no way they will do that. Design atrocity.
