Do you know what I just realized/thought of? I bet all of the gadget/blog sites are CRYING right now as their volume will be at an all time low. Of course there will be those who can't access the stream because of work or such, but majority will be watching live at apple. Poor Engadget, lol.

being a work day tomorrow in US, most of us will be in office and watching Engadget; so still there will be a market for them; we are happy not many refreshing the pages in the engadget

Well my DSL speed has dropped from the usual 7 mb/s to 2 - 3 mb/s randomly just in time for the apple event. Thanks bell (Y)

How much you wanna bet that there is no wireless access for the audience at the event? After the network catastrophe at WWDC, Apple is going to control their environment to ensure a good show. And after all the irresponsible press they've been getting lately, they want to control the message being sent to the public, by broadcasting the even themselves.

there's never wireless access for the audience. the issue was all the mifi stations that were set up that interfered with Apple's wifi.

I just checked VLC v1.1.3 on OS X 10.5.8 and can confirm that the HTTP Live Streaming demos, like the following one: http://devimages.apple.com/iphone/samples/bipbop/gear2/prog_index.m3u8 works!

All people on Windows, Linux or Mac OS X 10.5.8 have to do is to install VLC 1.1.3 and copy the .m3u8 URL from the HTML5 VIDEO element, and you are ready for some "active content".

I was testing the same. While that file works, I don't believe the VLC client supports full live streaming.

An M3u file is just a playlist format
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M3U

The live streaming portion of it requires the player to actively refresh that file I think.

Tomorrow is gonna be busy with the vmware 2010 conference going on next door.

I have retested this on Windows 7 with Safari 5 and all the current updates and it doesn't run.
Just tried with Chrome and still didn't work. I am really surprised that I can't get those clips to load with Chrome based on what the document says regarding only needing a plugin.
The reason could also be Apple that chrome is not working. Like Apple did it with the HTML5 Demos.
But what’s a bit odd is that you can only view the examples using Apple’s Safari web browser. Other HTML5-compliant browsers — like Google Chrome — are blocked.

This one is working with Chrome (Windows).

No, Apple just learned how to stream live video. Good for them. The rest of the world have been doing this for years.

Watched over 500 NHL games via stream. Even on a PC.

Perhaps apple doesn't want to disrupt corporate America

hi! good morning hahahaha !

i have a quest. mmmh.. does the prices will be the same? $299 for the 32GB? (i dont know if 32GB will be the low cost end)

HTTP Streaming and iTV say HTTP TV Broadcast for me

Just a thought...since Apple has not attempted (or have but that was a long time ago, I don't know) live broadcast and they are trumpeting this delivery as proprietary "leading" technology, could this mean that Apple will start doing TV broadcast via HTTP?

I mean putting together rumors about an iTV, HTTP broadcast and 99c rental makes me think that Apple will be going into broadcasting like no one else did.

Plus, isn't the data center supposed to be finished already by this time so this could mean they will be testing it's prowess?

I also had a chat with my boss who is an Autodesk Partner that he is doubtful that the new AutoCAD WS viewer will run drawing files locally due to these files being huge through you can have the data on the cloud and interface with it using a thin client.

Anyway, I am excited for tomorrow just about the time I wake up and watch early morning news tomorrow before work so I will be on it on my iPad.

:D

Does anyone know what time will it be on the east coast (miami, florida) for the live stream..it says pacific time ?..im too lazy to look it up:p

Apple's been able to stream en mass for a very long time (and have done so before), they've just chosen not to most of the time. Either Apple is very confident that the new streaming technology can handle the amount of streams they'll most likely be providing or there is a reason they want to stream this specific event ... or both.

It is much more cost effective for the NHL to stream hundreds of games to paying subscribers than it is for Apple to invest in the necessary infrastructure to stream a few very popular, free live events per year.

I CANT WATCH THIS EVENT BECAUSE I DONT HAVE SNOW LEOPARD

You could run out an purchase an iPhone 4 to watch the streaming announcement that Apple will finally begin shipping iPhones without the antenna problem next month. ;)

I have no clue what you are referring to but when Apple announces new products the prices never go up, they either stay the same or go down.

Sooo... I get to watch this on my 3,5" iPhone instead of my 20" iMac, because the latter runs OS X Leopard.

Steve, wtf? But thanks for the effort.

I just don't understand all the bras and panties being thrown around on a technology that has been around for quite a while in internet years.

With that said congrats to Apple for introducing the new technology.

No I won't be watching it. I'll catch the notes somewhere on the web.

It's because of QuickTime X

I love all the people complaining about this. It is like this is the first time they have they have had an issue where they OS being out of date meant they couldn't do something.

If your computer can't run Snow Leopard than maybe you should buy a new computer. If you can run it (in other words it's an Intel Mac), then you have no excuses.

HTTP Live Streaming of H.264 has not been around for quite a while in internet years, it is roughly a year old at best. The big deal isn't that they are using it, it's that they are streaming a live Apple event for the first time in years.

I barely remember the last time they did it. I seem to remember the feed was super laggy and crashed a few times. It's no wonder they stopped doing it and worked on a new technology to improve it.

It's a fact that most live streaming on the internet on a massive scale usually utilizes peer-to-peer networking to try to help bandwidth issues. If Apple thinks they can show off their technology which doesn't use that and they will have no issues, than I think it will be amazing to see if they can pull it off.

The people without Snow Leopard or iDevices will be left out, but that still leaves a huge amount of people to test it out. Who knows what Apple's true intentions are.

Just a little aside, I know for a fact that MLB.com uses HTTP Live Streaming for their iOS apps, and they seem to do a great job with it and they have no issues. So I think the new "open standard" is actually pretty spectacular from my own experiences.
