The batteries can degrade. But if they are deemed not fit for purpose, UK law wins. As they aren't user-replaceable parts, they aren't consumable items. The consumer will win.
Interesting take. I wonder if it’s actually true. I mean tyres aren’t really user replaceable but they are consumable.

Really? Can you show me cases in the UK were courts have forced manufacturers/vendors to replace sealed batteries for free in 5 to 6 year old devices (or even 2 to 5 year old devices)?

There have been many cases of electronic devices being replaced after the initial 1 year warranty period.

It’s a grey area in terms of stores. Shops over here don’t offer the 6 year warranty period but when people quote the sales of goods act the retailer usually backs down (going to court would be the last step). But we know how much Americans love to go to court!

If say Samsung doing something as Apple, I would stop buy Samsung phone. If Huawei doing samething, I would not buy Huawei. If all OEMs doing this, I would buy phones with replaceable battery. Simple is that.

Now can Apple fan do the same or still insist Apple can do no wrong?
I never used the words "right" or "wrong".

My own stance is they should have been more transparent, I care less about the "power management" because there is a greater good involved in this, not the nefarious abounding conspiracy theories.

They serve my needs at the moment, and to me that is what matters.

The difference is, if I was using a Samsung phone and they started doing this to prolong phone usability, I would not stop buying their phones. Same with Apple. Does that mean I insist Apple can do no wrong? No, it means I agree with this particular decision. Why is this so hard to understand?

LOL...if you want to argue that Apple lost your trust despite not being able to demonstrate anything that Apple deceived you about, be my guest.

Wait ... if I convince you, am I allowed to loose some trust in Apple?

I'm aware of Stockholm syndrome, but this is a whole new level ;)

There is enough in this issue for people to at least raise question , and feel hard done by if a slow device lead them to upgrade .

Have a good day mate.

What exactly would he need to demonstrate when Apple already admitted not communicating about what they did to the phones? Trust is a funny thing in the sense that it's greatly affected by small details like the order in which you tell about something, i.e. before or after you get caught.

The ABS example made no sense . Would you be upset if after a car service your car went slower depending on how much fuel was in the tank? It's a much more relevant example . Be it car or phone, the user has the right to be informed if performance is changed

The ABS example makes perfect sense. Is the driver really going to know exactly what speed or pavement conditions need to exist before ABS activates? No. Is the driver really going to know exactly how long ABS will activate? No. All the driver knows is that the car has ABS. In this case, Apple responded to complaints about auto shutdowns (that were themselves a built-in safety feature to prevent damage) and added a functionality that would slow the processor down to the level necessary to prevent an auto shutdown. That's it.

Another example with cars would be mileage per tank of gas. It's not always going to be the same due to changes in speed (which effects mileage per gallon), but how many drivers have specific knowledge of the ratio between speed and mileage for their specific vehicle? Very few.

Some "electronic devices being replaced" is not what I asked about. I asked about free battery exchanges (or a device replacement because of an exhausted battery).

So we went from throttled to not working? This is getting comical at this point. To all the ones who seem to be soooo salty, go to android if you feel so strongly.

You should have seen it before. Someone said they'd rather the phones just die.

Funny really. Talk about an over-reaction.

Apple should have done this years ago. Get new batteries into old iPhones and then dominate the Apps market even more by having old iPhones in the secondary market compete on price with Android phones. Keep those old iPhones circulating and in use either with original customers (who are getting great value out of years of use) or with new customers buying the phones used.

Part of me says they got greedy - they want you to upgrade each year, imagine being in Cooks shoes, you get a very high goal to reach year profit wise. These goals are resulting in "actions" being taken, among which is increased prices all round .

Same rule applies though. It’s not consumable because it isn’t user replaceable. I’m sure it has happened, especially with Apple due to their customer service.

Incorrect. Heavy throttling only occurs in situations where the phone would have otherwise auto shutdown. The feature was added to iOS when users complained about auto shutdowns. A + B = C.
Incorrect. Heavy throttling happens when I open mail, safari, music, maps, Chase, Safeway apps...etc. And for gods sake, even the phone app.

Because it would hold the entire ecosystem back. Better to just add the option to the latest iOS.
Man, but we should have phone equiped with everything that we bought in package. That’s the deal. I pay what I get. I think, apple should at least let us downgrade our phones to the latest version of ios. I mean ios which was released in this year when we bought phones (iphone 7—10.3.3).

You'll know when your ABS is not working (in situations when it should). Trust me, you'll recognise a skidding car when you are in the driver's seat.

I said my phone should die. I'd prefer 100 % performance and £79 out of pocket to use the device for another 12 months instead of thinking about upgrading to an X at £999. Is that wrong ? What I don't want is a device that might be heavily throttled while Apple says that the battery does not need replacement .

So I'd this is such great thing and the brother Apple is doing for users seek, why not lie about it. Why Apple tell user the battery is in good condition yet slow the phone done?

Apple can never wash themselves clean, when they lied to its users.

And Apple now wants to charge user 25 dollars to clean up the mess Apple made? Such a joke company

Totally unnecessary on Apple's part, but another example of their unique dedication to customer experience and customer satisfaction. Apple is an amazing company.

Easy to say now once they have been caught...

All you pitchforkers should settle down now.

I don't even believe Apple needed to do this, but they decided it was the right thing to do to show customers they are actually NOT trying to screw with them.

Apple is a great company.

What about customers who bought new phones thinking that was the only way AFTER speaking to a genius..

If you are so sure that it has happened, why can you not show me even a single case? And I am referring to cases where the ‘sales of goods act’ was explicitly invoked.

Apple replaced my iPhone 6 when its GPS stopped working outside the warranty period in Switzerland (where there is no EU law on warranty and no act as specific as the ‘sales of goods act’. These things occasionally happen because of goodwill but not because of a legal obligation.

Demonstrate that Apple actually did something deceptive. Users complained about auto shutdowns, which are a safety feature that prevents damage to the phone in specific load/charge situations. Apple added a software feature that prevented the auto shutdown by slowing processor speed so that continued operation wouldn't cause damage. So all they're doing is adding an extra layer to a safety mechanism already engineered into the phone at purchase.

Transparency kills the conspiracy. Apple lied to its users first then offered half bake explanation then wants charge 25 dollars to clean up this mess?

Good for Apple's shareholders. It now get another billions of dollar with this stupid battery replace program
