A free case is nice, but since I didn't buy a bumper, and can't get a refund for having done so, I'm still out the money I spent in purchasing a case. This really only works out as a sweet deal for anyone that bought the bumper. Don't get me wrong, I'll still take the free case (assuming there are any good options....I'm talking Speck Candyshell-esque, not generic-silicone-lint-catcher-number-3) but this solution doesn't completely resolve things.

Oh well. The problem went away as soon as I put a case on anyway, and I never planned to use the phone naked, so my complaints are mostly on principle (my main complaint being the fifty or so dollars I spent on various cases, all of them imperfect, when a bumper should have been provided free to begin with) .

We all get have heard this before...and today with Jobs. However:

1)What about that lovely 2-year contract you may have signed with ATT?

2)What about if you RENEWED your ATT contract?

Jobs didn't address those 2 questions.

I think Jobs basically just sidelined the issue...stating 100 times that every phone on the planet has reception problems. I've had 2 Nokias, 1 Motorola, and 1 iPhone 3GS over the past 12 years...0...I will say it again...0 of them have ANY problems in regards to holding the phone and losing reception. This iPhone 4 reception issue is the first time I, and likely a large percentage of other people on the planet, have ever heard of a cell phone that sucks when you hold it. You mean to tell me that cellular technology that has saturated our lives over the past 10+ years now suddenly is admitting some kind of caveat with antennas? I don't think so. My wife's 2 Blackberries and 2 Nokias over the past 8+ years never had such an antenna problem either.

Basically Apple won't fix the problem...the WORKAROUND is to put a stupid case over it. The fix is a relocation/redesign of the antenna.

1. contract is void

2. contract extension is void

3M Kapton Tape, 3/8". I had some laying around the house, I'm an electrical engineer, and a lightbulb appeared overmy head. Looks fantastic, like the edge of the phone is gold anodized, and it completely alleviates the problem. Just need a foot of the stuff and an exacto knife.

Post a photo....would like to see this....might be a cool thing to do...

Every person i know who owns 1 as well as myself dont have a problem.

We get it. Everyone has friends, neighbors, co-workers, relatives, colleagues, associates, dog groomers, auto mechanics, etc. and all of their iPhone 4's function flawlessly.

The problem here is everyone will line up for a free case regardless if they had the issue or not. I just hope they don't judge how big the problem was with the amount of free cases they give out.

Holy cow people.

If you don't want a bumper or a case, return the phone. Plain and simple.

It is a cell phone...let me repeat...CELL PHONE...

not a car, not a drug, not going to kill you or ruin your life.

Do I think they need to fix it correctly. Yes, hopefully they will. But this is a fix that works.

Please return your undamaged iPhone4 already

So I could buy from the Apple refurbished store $149 for the 16GB and $249 for the 32GB:)

I bought my Extreme Base Station and Extreme Express there and are very happy.

So please return it already.

Today's morning I ordered iPhone 4 + white bumper in Apple Online Store, so what now? They will charge my card for £500 (excl. bump) or £524 (incl. bump)? If they will charge me for £524 it is most likely they will refund me those money which I paid for bumper, right?

yep, that is how a refund works.

next week youll go on their site, put in your order number and they will refund the cost of the bumper.

Got my refund. I got $30 giftcards to itunes. Rest to my card. I went to valley fair in San Jose. I happened to be at the mole while the news broke out. So why not?

Not me.. I'm having zero issues and do not want a case that I wouldn't use anyways.

What a LOAD OF CRAP

Some people do NOT want a case on their phone it hides the look and kills the feel they like.

I'm getting a DROID instead

Have fun with that copy and paste and battery life.

I'd rather have an iPhone 4 with a free case than my Droid.

Stop whining and return the damn phone if you are not happy.

Ok flame me if you want for this but this is really getting out of hand now. Nobody is forcing you to keep the Iphone 4.

Options:

1- get a case of your choice or liking
2- get the free bumper or case Apple will be giving away
3- Return the phone get your money back and go get your Droid, EVO or whatever you like. Either choice will put you out of your grief.

Just please stop the whining. Nobody is putting you through this misery other than you for choosing to keep a product you claim to be unhappy about. That being said, everyone have a great weekend!

Apple will provide all iPhone 4 customers who purchase their phones by September 30th a free case.

In an unrelated news story, Apple has announced that due to the overwhelming demand for the iPhone 4, they will be raising the price of the phone by $30.

Only 0.55% of iPhone 4 users have called AppleCare with an antenna issue. The other 99.45% were holding the phone in their left hands and couldn't get through.

Hysterical. +1.

I actually got my white bumper yesterday, and no matter how I hold the phone now, it doesn't drop the signal in a good coverage area. It may be a band aid for the problem, but I had planned on using the bumper anyway.

thirdparty coating

it is amazing no thirdparty has come up a solution like some kind of invisible coating that could solve the issue. Sell an invisible coating for $29:)

If you don't like Apple fanboys, then why visit a site called MACrumors????

You seem not to understand what a "fanboy" is.. I am a Mac user, a iPhone user, and an iPod user. I like Apple products, I think they're well made and provide the user with a good experience.

That said, ALL of the sarcastic posts I make on here from time to time are ALL actual quotes that I got from reading Mac Rumors, Mac Daily News, or Apple Insider. And I do think it's a bit strange (and humorous) to visit a Tech website and read "What's everyone going to buy Steve for his Birthday this year"? Or the inability to construct a sentence about an Apple product without using the words "Elegant, Delicious, Just Gorgeous, or Magical". Of course, any product other than an Apple product is "Clunky, Crappy, or Junky"... When someone points out that Apple products are higher priced than identically specs PCs, the standard answer is "Apple doesn't race to the bottom". And of course, at least once a day someone's "Skating to where the puck is going to be"..

There is a big difference between being a Mac or Apple user and being someone who is so fanatically brainwashed that they are willing to kiss Jobs' ass at every opportunity - even if he's wrong, dead wrong....

Explain why a case alleviates the problem. Explain why a case works with phones where the antenna is not exposed.

Get a garden hose, turn on the water at some moderate pressure. Don't put a nozzle or anything on it.

Block the end of the hose with your hand. Observe, very little water comes out.

Now, instead put a kitchen strainer on the end of the of the hose. And then cover the strainer with your hand. Observe, more water comes out.

Due to the materials your hand is made of vs phone casings, your hand will block more of the signal. The more room between a signal and an obstruction, the more time/space it has to spread around the obstacle through less obstructive materials (air, plastic, etc).

Really, you knew everything I was saying before I said it. Just say either you don't like apple/iphone as a personal preference, or you're bored and like the feeling of being enraged on an internet forum. Don't pretend like you're actually attempting to seriously reason out an issue objectively as if you've done any research or careful assessment of the information.

Proportion of iPhone 4 customers that called Applecare = 0.55%

Proportion of US population that suffers hyperhidrosis = 0.5%

Proportion of Global Population that are descended from Genghis Khan = 0.5%

Here is the problem with the “return it” strategy

WE CANNOT RESELL OUR APPS

Many of us have invested large amounts of money over the last two years in apps. However, Apple has delivered a phone that cannot be used in the left hand by many users. So we either lose the ability to make calls using our left hand or give up our apps.

Since apps are protected by FairPlay, we cannot transfer or sell our licenses to others, as we could other software if we were to leave OS X or Windows.

That is a hell of a choice that Apple has given us. Use a defective phone or lose your entire investment in apps. Give us a refund on apps or the ability to re-sell, and then it will be fair.

I used Windows since 1995. When Windows Vista came out, i switched from iOS to Android (oh wait sorry thinking of something else) Windows to Mac because your product sucks. I want to be able to sell all of my apps downloaded apps that I bought on the net but I cant. WAAAAAH this is so unfair!

Apple just changed their website regarding bumpers.

30 minutes ago I ordered a white bumper (scheduled to ship first week of August) and got a confirmation email (as well as a pending charge on my card).

Now it says bumper are unavailable and only shows the black one now.

Glad I ordered mine a few weeks ago. My White one is being delivered today and the wifes orange is next week.

Thanks for the $60 bucks Apple. Call me a happy camper.

data can be given to collectors to use to differentiate what is real and what is not. when the data is collected and sorted we are left with statistics. statistics are not facts, nor proof. if 15,000 people (.5 % of 3 million) are peeved enough to call Apple Care, and some have stated above that they have problems but not called AppleCare, then there are many more. 15,000 people can make a bunch of stink on the internet with forum posts. forum posts are not facts. they only contribute to a mass of confusion among people who are inexperienced with dissecting information. we should remember to take all bits of information with a grain of salt and consider that there is truth and fiction in EVERY statement made by a human.

in the modern age of journalism we are rarely given unbiased and unemotional facts. instead we are scared with "reports that indicate ..." NOBODY promised you perfection. we have been given the opportunity to live without a piece of imperfection by returning the item in question. but with heightened emotional states this simple piece of reassurance is only seen as more fuel to fire anger, animosity, and disenfranchisement. I only hope that those who froth on forums with vitriolic venoms do not have family members they treat the same way.
