There is a big difference between being a Mac or Apple user and being someone who is so fanatically brainwashed that they are willing to kiss Jobs' ass at every opportunity - even if he'd wrong, dead wrong....

Agreed. Being a blind enabler does nothing but ultimately hurt the company we all love in the long run.

since when has 100% been considered a "very small proportion"?

Every single person can duplicate this, it is a design flaw.

And here is the problem with blogs and all these tech news sites in general. Your stated fact here is completely untrue.

The most I can get to drop is a single bar (like the 3GS or the Nokia cheapie phone I have sitting here or any other phone I've owned). It's also not a signal strength issue, I can start with 3 bars and get down to 2 bars.

With that said, it's not even consistent. Often I'll lose a bar and then it will come back. I also have to really squeeze to make anything happen. A simple touch does nothing. Maybe I'm not electric enough?

For me the i4 has been the best iPhone to date. I hold calls through areas where I used to tell people expect me to drop and that simply doesn't happen anymore. SJ gave everyone a way out, so take it.

If you don't like Apple fanboys, then why visit a site called MACrumors????

I was hoping for "one more thing" new Mac Pros!, haha. A fella can dream. :apple:

There is a difference between being a fan and being a fanboy. Sadly most here seem to be the latter these days.

it is amazing no thirdparty has come up a solution like some kind of invisible coating that could solve the issue. Sell an invisible coating for $29:)
Well Ghost Armor comes close. Again, in spite of the FUD and RDF the issue isn't simple signal attenuation by a proximal mass. Covering the gap does prevent the bridging effect so you are back to a just the mass attenuation and with the iPhone 4's superior reception that puts you on par with other phones as far has 'holding normally' drops.

And one benefit of Ghost Armor is the phone will still fit in the iP4 dock.

We all get have heard this before...and today with Jobs. However:

1)What about that lovely 2-year contract you may have signed with ATT?

2)What about if you RENEWED your ATT contract?

Jobs didn't address those 2 questions.

I think Jobs basically just sidelined the issue...stating 100 times that every phone on the planet has reception problems. I've had 2 Nokias, 1 Motorola, and 1 iPhone 3GS over the past 12 years...0...I will say it again...0 of them have ANY problems in regards to holding the phone and losing reception. This iPhone 4 reception issue is the first time I, and likely a large percentage of other people on the planet, have ever heard of a cell phone that sucks when you hold it. You mean to tell me that cellular technology that has saturated our lives over the past 10+ years now suddenly is admitting some kind of caveat with antennas? I don't think so. My wife's 2 Blackberries and 2 Nokias over the past 8+ years never had such an antenna problem either.

Basically Apple won't fix the problem...the WORKAROUND is to put a stupid case over it. The fix is a relocation/redesign of the antenna.

Actually, this is a mute point. You have 30 days from the date of signature to annul your contract w/ AT&T. You can return your phone and walk away from the contract w/out obligation.

"...today, Apple CEO Steve Jobs announced...that the company wants every customer to be satisfied...

- Apple will provide all iPhone 4 customers who purchase their phones by September 30th a free case..."

Make mine an Otterbox! :D

I was holding off on my iP4 purchace until I had an Otterbox (not available for iP4 yet) in hand anyhow. I hope they're available before Sep. 30th.

Depressing news conference for Apple in my eyes.
Plus, the questions that needed to be asked weren't asked.

And someone take the guy who wasted a question asking about Job's health, outside to be shot.

Do they let anyone into these things?

I would have liked to have answered...

If you are saying it is not a defect, then will the iPhone 4 you ship the rest of the year be the exact same hardware???

What was that letter sent to iPhone4 owners saying how surprised you were that the problem was how the bars were displayed, not hardware. Was that a complete lie?

Jobs walked a dangerous line saying some of the reports were bull%#^&$@. The journalism crowd can turn on him as fast as they fell in love with him.
Having Mossberg in your pocket can only help so much.

Hahaha, so wait because you don't want a free case you're going to get a droid? Let me tell you something, i own one and you wanna talk about having a phone that doesn't make phone calls, yea well there ya go. I'm on my third replacement and making a phone call is a painfully slow process, it usually involves realizing that the dialed has slowed to a halt which means hitting the numbers takes 30 seconds per number. So after a restart, the numbers work fine, but then you realize that neither you nor the other person can hear each other once the call has been made. Honestly, DROID does........everything horribly.

im thinking you were getting ID10T errors.
But since you didnt give the exact model, and service you use, I will give you the benefit of the doubt.
However, I have the moto droid and it never has those issues. Friends and family have other android based phones, they never have those issues.
Tired of people thinking that if it doesnt have a apple logo on it, then its junk.

Im a long time apple supporter, investor and plain ol fan. But when you have a product with a well known flaw, you just cant blow it off with a free case.
Hopefully they will have it redesigned soon so this can all go away.
Then again, I have been hoping they would make them for other carries for a long time too.

When is the "date of signature" when ordered online? The date ordered, date processed, date shipped, date received or date activated? Differences in policy between Apple Store vs AT&T? New customer or renewed contract?

AT&T charges a restocking fee even within the first 30-days according to the receipt.

Get a garden hose, turn on the water at some moderate pressure. .....

That is not how the receiver and antenna works in a cell phone at all. And how did you come up with using water as an analogy with the waves and energy through the surrounding material to the cell tower?

I appreciate Apple. I believe Steve Jobs when he says that he and his company care for their customers and will do everything in their power to ensure an amazing user experience. For those of you wondering if there will be a "secret new design" after September 30... you are morons. And you are doing exactly what Steve Jobs and the rest of the Apple Execs openly admitted to being hurt by today. Hope your proud of yourselves. You are the reason a great company is giving away 90+ million dollars. (That's $30 times 3 million, for those of you who are bad at math) And what they can't provide for themselves, they are going to pay for from 3rd party vendors.

To me, that speaks volumes of the integrity and sincerity of Apple. That they would be willing to give away that amount of money just to please you. Keep in mind that this hurts their second quarter earnings statement, AND remember the fact that they are a business ultimately interested in earning a profit... although it seems that they put customers over profit. Facts are facts and they speak for themselves. Most of the threads I've seen about this are filled with complainers who are dishonest and disrespectful. The phone works like it should. Few people have been actually affected by the signal issue. FACTS, people... they are all that matter. Hearsay is not doing a thing for you.

Seriously, you people who have done nothing but complain since day one. I am SICK and TIRED of your pathetic excuses and complaints. STOP. You sound like children. Phones aren't perfect. Apple isn't perfect. People aren't perfect. Get over it. It's a phone. Seriously, get over it. Take your free case and shut up. If you don't like it, well you have 3 or 4 days to return it still. So, take it back. Get a droid for all I care, although I've read some pretty awful stuff about that phone too...

Do anything you want, but stop sobbing over the internet about a phone that, in my opinion, works fine. Better than I expected. If you expected perfection you are delusional and should probably see a shrink. Seek help. Or Grow up. One of the two, but for the rest of us that are happy... do it FAST. I will not have my pleasant user experience diminished by a cry baby moron.

Here's a thought... all of you people out there who are not really having a problem with the phone's signal and reception... why don't you skip the free case. I will not be applying for a free one, because I was going to buy one anyway and I am happy with my phone. Why cost a good company more money? So, if you are happy, show your support and leave the whiners to their lame bittersweet victory.

Wow, just Wow.

Jobs just held a press conference, and basically said "no issue, but take a free bumper to shut up - just because we love you".

Agreed. Although it looks like the number of actual owners complaining or returning is very low (lower than 3GS which didn't have a public issue like this?).

Wow. Apple admits that they are selling a handheld phone that can't be held in your hand (unless you're very close to a cell tower).

Not at all - apple admits it will lose some signal but says the same happens with other phones. There's no question that there's an issue for some users, but the hyperbole just helps make it look like the situation is way overblown.

And part of the argument was "it doesn't drop very many more calls than other Iphones" - when the dropped call issue has made the Iphone 1G/2G/3G absolute laughingstocks in the US.

While dropped calls are an issue, people have always blamed ATT - if that is a big part of it, then no phone is going to improve the situation much.

The problem here is everyone will line up for a free case regardless if they had the issue or not. I just hope they don't judge how big the problem was with the amount of free cases they give out.

I don't really see that as a problem. Since the case is fairly cheap compared to the cost of the phone, even if everyone gets one, that's still a goodwill gesture.

just to get this straight. So the Iphone4 that was quote: "so beautifully designed and unlike any other phone you have ever seen" is now going to need an ugly rubber bumper just to make the thing work LMAO.

Yet some Apple fan-boys claim this to be no biggie, and find steve jobs proposal of free bumpers for everyone a really smart, nice and good solution to the problem. wow Apple really has turned some of you guys into straight suckers.

Steve jobs....you gotta give it to the guy, he really pimps his ho's with a sturdy hand

Restocking Fee

Well, it looks like I'll go back to the AT&T store and get my restocking fee refunded. When I returned the phone they charged me it even though I returned it because of the stupid antenna issue, and I was still having it even with my case.

If you don't have an iPhone 4. Shut up.

If you do, either return it or jump off a bridge with it.

So, how long have you have you been this brainwashed????

Yes, Steve Jobs "cares about YOU" and his feelings "are hurt"...

Pathetic.

If I ordered today my bumper with iPhone, they will ship this bumper and won't cancel my current order (I mean, cancel only bumper from this order), yep?
