Here is the problem with the “return it” strategy

WE CANNOT RESELL OUR APPS

Many of us have invested large amounts of money over the last two years in apps. However, Apple has delivered a phone that cannot be used in the left hand by many users. So we either lose the ability to make calls using our left hand or give up our apps.

Since apps are protected by FairPlay, we cannot transfer or sell our licenses to others, as we could other software if we were to leave OS X or Windows.

That is a hell of a choice that Apple has given us. Use a defective phone or lose your entire investment in apps. Give us a refund on apps or the ability to re-sell, and then it will be fair.

Obviously, then, you will benefit from that free case.

Facts don't lie.

Only 0.55% of users call AppleCare with problems.

Only 1.7% return rate, versus 6% for 3GS.

Dropped calls on par with 3GS.

Attenuation happens on other phones.

99.5% of iP4 users are HAPPY.

"God, please make me a bird, so I can fly far, far away" (Jenny from Forrest Gump) from all these morons posting about a phone that they don't even use. STOP TALKING ABOUT THIS if you have never used the iP4. Go home. Leave. Beat it kooks.

I own the iphone 4 for starters and 3gs...Now if you believe that then its something really wrong with you or you dont understand business as a whole and the strategies they use...Wow...:apple:

September 30th

Mentioning that cases will be free until 9/30 is perhaps the most useful piece of information from that whole spin-fest. They're working on another fix (sw, hw, whatever), but it's way too soon for them to get anyone's hopes up. I'm returning to my 3G until sometime around 9/25. :D

Oh, and SJ– owning several huge anechoic chambers isn't impressive. It's to be expected for any billion dollar company designing mobile phones (smart or otherwise). You think Nokia or Motorola don't do the exact same thing? /rant

0.55 % of 3 million?

.55% of 3 million. Thats more than 15,000 customers reporting this issue in 3 weeks.

Fact 1.

Almost 100% first blame the cell company for bad reception. The phone just works but the network is crap. AND. It usually is just so.

Go use a 3G phone on a train or on the road and you will see that the network is the number one problem and the first to be blamed.

We have maps of 3G coverage comparing networks with regards to speed and quality around here on websites.

Where are these users in Apple's so called "Facts"? Nowhere!

Has anyone else read this article:

http://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/gadgets-and-tech/news/is-apple-losing-its-touch-2027809.html

Such sensationalist, opinionated garbage. Clearly Apple shouldn't be beyond reproach, but this is an all-out attack, not a report.

Btw, when Jobs says that only a few users are experiencing problems, does this mean that most people simply can't recreate the 'death grip' no matter what they do? Or are they just not bothered/affected by it on a daily basis? I can make my bars drop down to one by holding the phone in a certain way at home, but I've never had dropped calls and don't naturally grip that area when using it for the most part. What I'm asking is, is it a hardware issue on every single iPhone 4 or only some? Or, as Jobs seemed to suggest at the conference, is it an issue only in certain areas with low signal strength? I can make it drop at home (from full to 1), but the 'death grip' had no impact when I was on a bus in central London the other day. What are your experiences?

What a LOAD OF CRAP

Some people do NOT want a case on their phone it hides the look and kills the feel they like.

I'm getting a DROID instead

lol wow its just a phone man. if u want to show the design get the invisible shield for it.

Droids not a bad phone enjoy it!

This makes no sense. If you liked the phone enough not to want to cover it with a case, why are you going to by the cheap plastic looking Droid instead? Isn't a iPhone with a bumper a nicer looking phone than a naked droid???

It seems to me that most of the people commenting on here dont even own an iphone 4. Every person i know who owns 1 as well as myself dont have a problem. Just because its apple everyone is jumping on the bandwagon.

No problem for me, not matter how (or how hard) I grip it. Maybe I don't conduct electricity the same way as everyone else! :p

I don't own an iPhone, but two of my coworkers do have this new model. One of them can duplicate this problem, but says it hasn't caused significant problems (meaning he hasn't noticed anything in actual use). The other guy already had the bumper case, and he is not experiencing any issues (Thank goodness! He's one of our Windows admins, and he wouldn't pass up an opportunity to razz me about an Apple issue - of course I'd still be able to point out he gave up his Windows phone for that iPhone...).

A very small sample size, to be sure - but whenever I hear hysterics on teh intarwebs I like to see if I can get first-hand information.

Mine works fine. Have to really 'squeeze' it all around the edge to get it to drop. I knew it was a little overblown! Although I still think SJ tip toed around any actual ownership of releasing a slightly crippled product.

BTW they said the white one is out by the end of this month, but the Apple online store doesn't show you can order it still.

If Apple manages to defy the laws of physics that are responsible for every smartphone on the planet experiencing signal attenuation when touched...

They'll probably let you exchange it for a unicorn.

My 3G must be a unicorn then because I could never make it drop to no signal here at home like I can my iPhone 4 without death gripping anything.

That would be the case for any device that doesn't have physical software (read I had the same problem with the apps on my Treo 650).

How do we get the free bumper? Do we have to go in to the store or can we order online?

I interpreted what was said as we need to order online later next week.

If all smartphones have this problem, it follows that it can be alleviated by using cases for these smartphones.

Is there any kind of evidence for this assertion? I haven't seen any.

What is the scientific explanation? How does covering up the antenna further give better reception?

At the moment, all evidence suggests that the reason this issue exists is because the user's hand comes in contact with the antenna. This is not the case for other phones.

You don't even have one and your complaining, this is exactly what Jobs was talking about. "all these issues"??????

Why not buy it and SEE if you have an issue!

You have after all 30 days to return it so what's the big deal.

It's a lot better than coming on here and making this ridicules ultimatums without even experiencing the phone in your environment.

Put your money where your mouth is pal, if your such an apple fan boy, what happen to your trust in a company that has always done the right thing by you?

Your an example of the whiners and the prophets of the doomsday scenario. Plainly reacting to stuff you read and not stuff you experience.

Enjoy your 3Gs!

Before you even read his post, you attacked.

Re-read, he did buy one. (hint)

Okay so basically all I heard was. . .

Blah,blah, Antenna
With blah, so you get a Free Case. . . blah, 0.55% actually have this problem.

White iPhones ship at the end of July. .
All I waited for. :)

lol

that will definitely give you the look and feel you like!

My thought exactly.
"Dude, what the hell happened to your iPhone? It looks all messed up. Hahaha, looks like a Droid."

My two RMA's also said "changed mind" for reason returning.

His numbers were garbage.

When I returned my phone, because it wouldn't make a call without failing, the reason indicated on the RMA was "changed mind".

Also you don't buy an Armani suit to walk around with a parka over it all day. Why couldn't they just admit to the conductivity issues and tell people they were going to fix it?
