If you can take the day off or a "day out of the office" and get to an Apple store around noon, my experience is that the lines are not that bad at all. All the hardcore overnight lines are done by then and the after work crowd has yet to show.

Could someone confirm if we preorder online does apple charge the credit card right away or upon shipment? Never preordered.

They charge your credit card immediately. I pre-ordered my iphone 5 and it went out of my card the minute I press submit.

I'd rather pick up in store so I don't have to wait around all day for the Fed Ex guy to show up at 9pm. They're going to be slammed that day!
Actually FedEx won't be affected, they're far busier over the holidays. iPhones are small, light, and the number of units while high for Apple, will only be a small bump compared to others high volume shipments. That's why Apple uses FedEx, this will be easy for them.

I don't understand why I can't order from Apple/do store pickup for a Verizon phone with the single line 2GB unlimited talk/text plan for $60? Why can I only get a share everything plan from Verizon if ordered from Apple?

I'd much prefer to order from Apple and do store pickup on launch day, but since I can only get the single line plans from Verizon direct, I am at the mercy of the Fedex guy.

Do I need to pick up on launch day ? Can I go after a couple of days ?

This is what I want to know. Although I would like the phone immediately, that isn't an option; however, I don't want to wait several weeks or even a month.

Someone answered my original post that several launches ago, it was 27 days.

Seriously folks, you're painting a giant "mug me" on you if you pickup on release date in a store. Have it delivered. FedEx will leave a package at your door if you leave a signed note with phone number and printed name on it asking them to. I do it all the time. My MBP was waiting for me at my door when I came home from work. It comes in a plain brown box, so unless some one takes the time to inspect the shipping label they aren't going to know what it is. But, YMMV based on neighborhood.

Or you can print the release form from the Apple website and stick it on the front door. I've done it for iPhones and other things Apple wanted a 'release' for signature for. As was said, YMMV on neighborhood!

And, online should start everywhere at 12:01 PDT simultaneously. 3:01 on the east coast, 8:01 am in the UK, etc. I seem to recall last time I did this (iPhone 5?) I had to give up and come back a few hours later when things had calmed down.

isn't there an apple store close by to where you will be? I'll be on vacation in Florida and I'm gonna do in-store pick up and just go to a store close to where I will be staying

I'll be on vacation in Florida too. We'll be in the Kissimmee/Orlando area. I've never done the in-store pick up, and I've never been away from home on a launch day, so this is a dilemma I've never dealt with before. I wasn't sure if you had to pick a particular store, and I'm not familiar with Florida at all.

Would it be possible to preorder an iPhone 6 for in store pickup and then trade in my current iPhone when I go to pick up the new one?

My question is how long are they going to hold onto it if you choose store pick-up? I have work until 7:00 and would rather not have my phone just sitting on my stoop all day. I wonder if they'll hold it all day for me.

They will certainly hold it all day, probably even 2-3 days or even a week since its paid for

I think I may have mixed things up. Edge is not available in store. And perhaps Next is for existing AT&T but not new ones? I inquired about switching from Verizon to AT&T and that is the information I was given, and this was only about 2 weeks ago, but I don't remember the exact date, that's why I was asking. Thanks for the reply.

Oh yeah that sounds correct. I believe Next in stores and online is for upgrades only.

I'm sure they could do that. I would sell it though. Apple would give you far less.

Just got this answer in an Apple chat..on whether or not preordering to Apple store will guarantee you a phone on launch.

In store pickup will be an option for pre-orders on the 12th in the US. If the Apple Retail store has pickup stock available, it will be an option when ordering the iPhone. Once the stores pickup inventory is out, pickup will no longer be presented as an option for that particular store. If a customer completes a pickup order, they will be able to pick it up on the 19th.

You will receive a hold email saying how long they will hold your phone for you that day.

I think there are two big stores in Orlando. We'll be staying in Ormond Beach and the closest Apple Store to us is in Altamonte Springs (like 20 minutes away from Orlando). I called the Store and they said I can pick the closest store to me when I pre-order my phone and then I can come in on the 19th at any time and pick it up! I was also thinking about maybe having it delivered at the hotel we're staying at, but we're leaving the 20th so I would hate if something happens and it can't be delivered the 19th and then I have no phone! at least at the apple store I can go there myself and pick it up.

I just got off the phone the the 5th ave NY store and they said there will be only 1 Line regardless if you pre ordered AND a chance that they might not have a phone for you even if you pre ordered.

This is why I'm bringing my school backpack into the Apple Store. I'll put the iPhone box in my backpack while at the counter and zip it closed. I'll walk out of the store normally with my backpack, and walk around the mall keep track of anyone who may be following me. Once I'm confident nobody is following me, I'll walk quickly to my car.

I may be paranoid...

I can't imagine they'd sell your phone. Apple charges you once successfully completing an online checkout. Your name is on the box.

This was at the Apple Store. Basically this was the process (keep in mind this was the first time they open up the in-store pick up). This was for the iPhone 5, 2 years ago.
1. You visit the apple site, every night after 10 p.m. they check inventory.
2. At exactly 10 p.m. they open up the system, you search the store by city/zip code. The system will present you with a list of stores around your area.
3. The store that has the color and size of your liking will light up as green to indicate that they have what you want.
4. You click on it pay, then you will receive an email to tell you that you are good for pick up.

Now, I can't speak to what it will be like this year. This was what I did for iPhone 5, and I was able to store 3 phones for my family members.

Thanks!
