I just hope that there is a way to filter out everything not TV+. This missing toggle made me cancel my Apple TV subscription, since I only want to watch stuff on TV+, nothing that I need to buy.
That’s always been a thing, just highlight the tv+ tab (the next one along from Watch Now)

You could also scroll down to the Channels row and select the tv+ channel icon.

Can someone explain why the iTunes Music Store and Apple Music have to be separate apps and walled off from each other? I get that iTunes will probably have music not available on Apple Music but couldn’t they just gray that out or have a note that it’s not available for streaming and can only be purchased?

How about changing the name of the device or the service instead of the confusing Apple TV and Apple TV+. What a horrible naming scheme. There is the Apple TV (which is not a TV), Apple TV+, (also not a TV, but ok it's. a streaming service) and the Apple TV app. Is that the TV? How is your average older consumer supposed to keep this straight? Really strange naming conventions on Apple's part here, which ordinarily does such good job in making their devices consumer friendly.
That's true...however I think because the product & services arrived at different times, they simply followed the trend.

The original streaming box Apple TV name was given years ago before (individual) company streaming platforms became a thing. The + moniker became widely used as an easy studio naming trend, so Apple followed suit.

Then of course the app...for their streaming service...on their streaming device...needed a name.

They seem to be slowly scaling back on the iTunes branding, perhaps they'll find a solution for the this.

Current Apple TV user experience, frustrating. The up next, adds content I have not even subscribed too. A whole lot of tied together content, just annoying. One word Apple needs to return too, KISS. Applies to the entire Apple ecosystem. Lost that simple concept.

This is the scenario I've been terrified of...and knew was coming.

Given the AppleTV app cannot load large media libraries on Apple's hardware...an open bug for almost 10 years, I have no idea how I will access my considerable content purchases. Apple clearly doesn't care about a small number of its largest media and subscription customers. (And the individual media files don't always reflect that you've purchased the content.)

The only reliable way today to access media purchases is through these stand-alone apps which are being discontinued..

I meant in the search, if you search for a show, it includes the stuff you got to buy separately, I don't want to watch stuff I need to buy because I hate subscriptions enough.

You should clarify. Apple thinks that means Keep Increasing Services Sales. ;)

For a very brief moment I let my hopes get ahead of me... that this change was going to get rid of (maybe as an option at least) the 'App maxtix' and instead bring together catalogues from all platforms into one interface so I can, for example, look for horror movies in one place rahter than looking in Netflix, then Tubi, then Prime, the Disney, then my public library one I can't think of the name for... and then, and then...

But that would be asking too much.. I know... after all, each little service has to hold control over domain. Either that, or I have not figured out how to do this simply enough - I know i can do a Siri search and it will tell me what platforms a movie is on, but I like to browse the titles and watch trailers.)

The "iTunes Movies" and "iTunes TV Shows" apps are going away on the Apple TV box. Instead, users can buy/rent movies and TV shows in the Apple TV app. That functionality has been available for years.

They're just removing duplicate functionality. The Apple TV app is where they want people to buy/rent movies and TV shows.
Got it in the end when I went on my Apple TV 🤦‍♂️(device). There was no point in MacRumors mentioning “Apple TV” in reference to those apps (“standalone ‌Apple TV‌ apps that are available for renting and purchasing TV shows and movies”). They’re simply Movies and TV Shows.

I’d be all for this as long as they finally give us the option to turn off auto play next episode. I HATE that ”feature” so I usually use the TV Shows app to watch shows.
You have always been able to do so.
Settings > Accessibility > Motion > Auto-Play VideoPreviews > Off
Um, no. jkeitz was talking about autoplay of episodes, not previews. Every time I watch an episode of something in the TV app--whether it's from my Apple TV+ subscription, or a purchased (iTunes) show, or an Apple TV "Channel"--the episode I'm watching gets minimized into the corner and a short countdown timer appears. I have to scramble to find the remote so I can actually watch the end of the current episode before it gets cut off in favor of the next episode. I never want autoplay of any video. For some reason, Apple thinks any time I start to watch any video, I want to watch video forever, until the heat death of the universe. No. I want to watch the video I selected, from the beginning to the end. That's all.

TV is the worst thing Apple makes. It's glitchy, inconsistent, confusing, and just doesn't work most of the time I try it. Old units, new units, doesn't matter, they're all irritating to use.

My $40 Roku has been utterly flawless, still allows me to AirPlay (and Android friends can cast), and oh yeah it's $40.

The only app that I haven't been able to get to work right on said Roku is, surprise surprise, the Apple TV app. No sound when attempting to play movies. Never been able to get it to work.
Seriously? The Apple TV is easily the best streaming device ... it's better than any TV OS I have used too. It's not glitchy in the slightest ... it's rock solid. My mother has the Roku and its dire compared to the Apple TV.

Yes, that was called cable... one interface for all entertainment, one search box for all programming, consolidated into a single service. We wished that away because "al-a-carte would be cheaper" and we "could only buy what we wanted to watch." ;)

since  has nothing to offer on their store watchable,
I installed every tv series in the tv app on a spare MacBook Pro Monterey
and added playlist for easy navigation instead of the 400 films that are pictured on the TV.

there is a new thing on "system 17" were I can add folders of the unusable junk
like podcast, fatness and game etc. were only
folder-computers-settings
are visible on the landing screen.

I'm finally happy with my entertainment situation now were I cans watch tv shows like
killing eve, then say dexter or succession via playlist just by scrolling the remote that finally works!

please don't change this, !
or i dont update?

Does the same thing for any content using the native AppleTV player, well at least it did the last time I used it.
I only turned it back on because the wife was moaning the episodes were no longer auto playing.

Edit: Seems tvOS 17 has broken it and episodes are back to auto-playing again.
Hopefully they’ll fix it in a future update.

Apple plans to overhaul the TV app in an effort to consolidate its Apple TV+ streaming service and its standalone movie and TV show purchase options, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. A tvOS update in December will introduce the changes that Apple has planned.

To push users to the Apple TV app, Apple plans to remove its standalone Apple TV apps that are available for renting and purchasing TV shows and movies. The movie and TV show sections from the iTunes Store app on iPhones and iPads will also be eliminated.

Apple wants to push customers to the TV app, which already houses purchased movies and shows, Apple TV+ content, and third-party channels that customers can subscribe to.

The TV app will serve as a hub for streaming content, and Gurman says the redesigned app will have a side panel at the left that can be used to navigate between different video categories.

Updated navigation should make the TV app less confusing for consumers, making it clearer which content is from Apple and available through the Apple TV+ subscription and which content requires a separate subscription.

That sounds like a good way to make sure that I don't update my AppleTV ever again.. cool.

I mean, the killing off of the Trailers App was great, and didn't result in Trailers going to someplace completely nonsensical and harder to find, so no worries about how Apple will screw this up.. right?

I'm glad they have more ambitions with the tv app. It's gorgeous on tvOS (although confusing), but it's ugly on the Mac. It looks like a bad SwiftUI port...

Fitness also needs some work. Some screens look particularly empty on tvOS, especially when the session ends... it's not rewarding at all.

What do you mean...on TV OS or MAC OS? Where is your media library and what are you using to play the media files? Seriously some of the comments on here make me think I must be using a different device. I have about 300 movie rips on Infuse (the best video app on the market and on any platform). Some of them are 100GB and play flawlessly ... unlike Plex which is awful with large files and needs a server.

Agreed and it's a good move. I seriously have no clue what some of the people on here are talking about regarding it on TV OS.... and I don't think they do either. The Apple TV app itself is absolutely fine.

“Apple TV Update

An update is available. Do you want to download and install it now?”

Glad the odds have favored you. I haven’t yet met a single Apple TV that hasn’t put up a huge fight.

Roku is just a spy device. Even tracks how many times you pick up the remote. And sends it all to Google. Might as well just bend over.
