New hardware .. :)

I'm kind of backpedaling now on the new OLED strip of the Mac, because they say "will always be present" however if these are only representations on what is shown, which also mean Apple can change them anytime they like, and restrict uses/shown based anytime over standard current psyical buttons. (Apple could do that well with with 'soft' keys it would be more suited to them) not to customers.

Pass on this. Can already see that one coming....

"...focus of Apple's just-announced September 7 media event will be on the iPhone 7 and the second-generation Apple Watch, the latter of which has now been confirmed for the event.."

Didn't realize the second gen AW was confirmed..anyone know if this is true?

Meanwhile Lenovo just realized a full OLED screened laptop, not just a little strip that the next MBP is supposedly going to have.

Will we really see some innovation from Apple again? Who knows, but we will find out soon.

I feel like a lot of people here would just complain that Apple's copying the competition if the next MacBook had an OLED display. Apple can't win here.

The problem with OLEDs still remains longevity; until they solve that problem I'm really not interested in having it in a computer monitor or display I intend on keeping indefinitely.

Wow, cool stuff. I'm bummed about the AMD graphics chips on the iMac though - we normally always have mobile variants of the graphics chips (significantly slower) and Nvidia just switched their mobile variants to full fledged desktop chips...I was really holding out hope for a iMac with a GTX-1070 option in it.

Apple will most certainly be staying with AMD, but the reviews of an HP Omen laptop with the base Polaris model (RX 460) showed the performance was very close to the equivalent Polaris desktop model. MBPs may only have the R460, but I expect the iMac 27" will also offer an RX 470 or perhaps even an RX 480.

Apple is simply waiting for Kaby Lake... At least that's what I want to believe...

Kaby Lake mobile is mid-2017. Even the desktop chips for the iMac won't be released until around Spring 2017 per the last roadmaps from Intel I saw. These MBPs and MBAs will be Skylake, but that is still an improvement on what they have now.

I think it is pretty safe to say that for the vast majority of users, a USB C port will be almost useless. The only purpose it will serve is a place to plug in an adaptor. If Apple do this on a "Pro" machine, it will be (yet another) huge mistake.
No, it's necessary to push the industry towards the standard. They don't see it as another port but rather the replacement for USB A so it makes sense in their point of view. At least it's not as ridiculous as removing a headphone port from a device.

Help me understand this quote please. I just upgraded my late 2008 15" Pro and with some RAM upgrades to 8GB and a fast SSD upgrade it wasn't "dying". It just couldn't edit video like I needed it to. Is your MBP dying or do you just want a new toy? There is a difference.

Oh really? I didn't realize that there is a difference between declining performance of an MBP and wanting a new toy. Thank you for the clarification.

They won't do anything to the air that brings it closer to the rMB (display).. If they get rid of magsafe and change the keyboard -- those are negatives for a lot of people. They might change the trackpad, but I doubt it.

Magnificent! Maybe I can upgrade from my 2011 model! I hope the new MacBook Pro designs add some sweet features!

I am a little confused on keeping the MacBook Air lineup though, does it seem like there is a lot of overlap with the MacBook lineup currently?

Agree. I "heard" rumor the "Air" line would retire in place of the MacBook. This would follow the "Tri" model lineup:

Three variations in each lineup:

- MacBook's: 12" MacBook, 13" and 15" MacBook Pro's (Retina)
- iMac: 21.5", 21.5" 4K, 27" 5K
- Mac mini: 1.4GHz, 2.6GHz, 2.8GHz
- Mac Pro: Quad-Core base discontinued, 6, 8, 12-Core
- iPad: 9.7", 10", 12.9"
- iPhone: 4", 4.7", 5.5"

First Machines Using Kaby Lake Processors Coming This Fall, but MacBook Pro Not Likely Among Them

Really sad if this headline turns out to be true. Apple never used to fall so far behind on the new Intel chips, even if it meant refreshing a product that would be redesigned only later that year.

Apple could do this now. They could take the standard keys and make some of them not work in certain situations. It's completely in their control and you can do nothing about it. You are powerless.

Worrying about "Apple DRM" with the OLED touch strip has to be the most random concern I've ever heard. Worst case scenario is they don't give developers the flexibility to use it as much as they would like.

Hearing AMD for the GPU makes me happy. Apple has always done drivers better for AMD than Nvidia, and I'm looking forward to being able to upgrade my iMac to an AMD GPU equipped machine a bit after the new ones come out.

I hope they go AMD GPUs for the Macbook Pros as well, even though I'm not due to upgrade mine for a while yet.

The Kaby Lake CPUs shipping now are the ultra-low power models with very low clock speeds and weak(er) performance - something the Apple MacBook would use. It is far too slow to be acceptable in a MacBook Pro and really is too slow even for the MacBook Air.

The Air and Pro require the more powerful models and those are not scheduled to ship until later next year.

Hmmm...new MacBook Pro + 5K Thunderbolt Display or new 5K iMac and keep my 12-inch MacBook for portability? Perhaps the ultimate first world problem of 2016;)

Pros/Cons of Option 1: MacBook Pro + 5K Display
Pros
  • Just one Mac to manage and worry about
  • More powerful portable
  • Display will last a long time
Cons
  • Less powerful desktop
  • Heavier portable
  • Need to plug in a cord every time you sit down

Pros/Cons of Option 2: 5K iMac and keep my 12-inch MacBook
Pros
  • No compromises, super powerful desktop
  • Ultra-portable notebook
Cons
  • Need to manage multiple Macs, using semi-unreliable services like Back to my Mac and iCloud to unify the file systems
  • Less powerful portable

I tried 5k iMacs 6 months ago...they were burning hot and stunk of melting plastic. The smell went away when I upped the fan speed but I didn't like a custom solution like that. I hope apple engineers pay attention to that.

Did you have them looked at?

My late 2015 5K iMac runs dead cool, no matter what I'm doing. FCP X editing/rendering, Ableton, four streams of IP cameras, whatever. Put my hand in back over the vent and I feel air that is barely warm. No fan noise to speak of, I have to put my ear to the back to tell if its running.

A huge difference from my 2012 27" iMac which was always toasty on the top when just surfing the web.

It's a beautiful machine with a gorgeous display.
