Too bad Apple doesn't realize it's advantage is that parents have to worry less about what their children access via iTunes. IMO, most of American adults don't want to see adult material either.

Don't give me the line "if you don't like it, don't view it". I'm still tainted by an iTunes store in my house that sells porn. I still get exposed to the ads, etc. I don't shop in brick and mortar stores where I have to view the shrink-wrapped porn mags.

Victoria Secret is a great example of what will happen. They used to be a small corner shop in the malls. Now they have their own TV shows and prime time commercials that force everyone to watch them.

Don't give me the line "the human body is beautiful". It sure is, created by God.

Don't give me the line "there's nothing wrong with sex". There sure isn't. Showing the naked bodies of women to men to get them sexually aroused isn't what sex was created for.

Don't tell me "don't be a prude". Our bodies are wonderful and there is an intended purpose for them. It's fun and exciting. We don't need to enter into perversion to have fun.
It is your opinion that Playboy is a "perversion" - it is not a fact.
Apple has a history of forging it's own path regardless of what customers want so if they decide to go this way you and Apple will probably have to part company. I'm sure if they do anything though, it will be subscription based and they will make very sure that it is not accessible by minors.

you do realize that the itunes music store sells plenty of music that carries an "explicit" lyrics tag (thanks tipper!), and that the itunes movie store carries plenty of r-rated "strong sexual content" material that is just as explicit as playboy, ibooks is full of "romance" novels that are plenty steamy ...

All are protected/protectable by parental controls.

Why should the app store follow different rules?

OK.
Even though my question was removed by the mods I'll ask again.

Do you have a link or source for that scientifically proven claim of yours?

First, I'm sorry that I can't answer all of the replies to my post.
I saw a recent article, in German, about a book which talked, mostly about how the industry is "destroying" teens and people who are exposed to what to expect in bed with their partners. I mean it's pretty obvious if you consume too much of this stuff and then when the "real" action happens you "don't get what you see on tv"...if you know what I mean.
Anyway, it's all fake, nothing to do with reality and yes, it might be a view which was supported 2000 years ago. who says it's bad?
Again: I'm not saying not to be intimate, being intimate is a very good thing, all I'm saying is: exposing this so easily on the internet, tv, etc. (and in europe this stuff is EVERYWHERE) harms much more than you think.
I.e: you would actually have to explore things with your partner and use YOUR imagination and not trying to do the things you saw on a screen.

About the link: google for the book published by sociologist Gail Dines...you'll find the right title.

Though I agree that porn is a problem when used too much I think you're going a bit far to state that looking at naked bodies is perverted. There is a big difference between nudity and pornography. Victoria Secret is an underwear shop, right? That's not porn. That's underwear. I am capable, as are most men I'm sure, of looking at a woman in her underwear and not getting immediately aroused or being unable to control myself. Again, nudity is not the same thing as porn. Even a sexy image is not the same thing as porn.

AppStore already has better parental controls than Safari, so what's the big deal about this? If Apple wants to get in the magazine subscription business seriously, they have to allow all kinds of magazines (which are legal, of course). It's insane to say that adult content can't be released for iPad because kids use iPads too. Apple will probably put all kind of adult content hidden as default, and you have to specifically allow it from options before any ads or links are shown.

I think the only problem might be that while Apple gets revenue from magazine subscriptions (which is good), it also gets revenue from adult content business (which usually has a negative image).

This whole moral values discussion is silly. To each their own.

I'm sure if there is going to be something like Playboy on iTunes, it's not going to be easily accessible by minors.

Any parent out there that thinks their teenager doesn't get exposed to sexually explicit materials if they want to is foolish. Curious teens will be curious teens and there are much easier places to get porn than in potentially a place like iTunes where everything is recorded and easily viewed by the parent.

like a few others have sad, you could view porn on the iPad for a while now. It's just now there's going to be some sort of app for it I guess? I dunno personally I think it's perfectly fine. Any parents ever heard of content block? Besides, the iPad is more of an adult themed device anyways. I don't think there should be any problem at all. How many 14-17 year old kids are you honestly going to see productively using an iPad?

Music Videos, Movies - heck even kid's TV shows have more explicit activity than a victoria secret store and/or commercial.

LOL. Multiple-Cores also.

Unfortunately many children spend more time interacting with violent games and video than socializing. I think you are over simplifying the effects. Jumping around and waving guns in weird ways? That is the only outcome? It doesn't have to manifest in outright violence to have an effect.

No more exaggerated than what people say will happen if porn comes to the iPad. That was the point. I was exaggerating. Glad you picked up on that point but sad I didn't correctly convey the fact that I was intending to exaggerate.

I understand your argument to a point. I grew up with bugs bunny and I heard these arguments about violence from cartoons and rejected them because the imagery was not realistic. But as a teenager I noticed myself that there was a difference between the outright over the top silliness in bugs bunny and a cartoon that draws people in a realistic manner. I realized even then that there was a greater need to explain the realities of say he-man or super man over bugs bunny. The cartoons drawn of real people while not realistic to an adult have a bit more reality in terms of physics built into the world setting.

The fact is we don't give kids enough credit. True, there are some truly psychopathic kids that will light things on fire but lets just focus on the normal people that compose most of society. Kids will pick up sticks and turn them into toys. They'll make them guns, they'll make them dolls, they'll throw them around, etc... They know they aren't real, they know they're imagining – in the words of my three year old nephew when someone asked him what his imaginary friend would do he replied, "silly, he isn't real." We're creative creatures. Part of that is coming up with weird and overly exaggerated scenarios. This can include hyper-violence or kinky sex when one gets old enough to handle such things (and again, it can be argued that some people never get old enough). Part of being a parent is making sure your child can grow and use their creativity in productive ways. Having parental controls like the iPad helps (although it really would be nice if the iPad had multi-user accounts so it wasn't such a chore making it ready for a kid/don't want them emailing from your work account, etc...).

Cant see this lasting long.... think of the complaints from parents!!

Doesn't the news stand where you get your Dandy or Beano comics also have adult content? The delivery system is not responsible for the content any more than the TV or Cinema is. The responsibility will come from restricted access via passwords I would assume. Can kids get around this, of course. Just as they can get a printed adult magazine if they try hard enough.

Seriously?!?

This is very bad news. Sometimes you need to take a stand against things in the world that are bad. Even if people were able to access porn on their browser, that doesn't mean Apple needs to be a willing participant.

I've admired their stand, until now. Very disheartening. I feel let down.

No one said it would be open season for Porn on the iPad... which, like many have pointed out already is... if a kid wants to view porn these days it takes about 2 seconds with a web browser and you can see some very sick stuff. It's the reality of the internet. At least PB is somewhat tasteful porn and I'm sure it's not going to be easy to get at without some sort of age verification.

with kids I mean 4/5 year olds...;)

just see it...your little girl uses the last app with barbie...on the iPad...
and hits app store where you have PlayBoy...

you are on the phone...and cannot do anything becauseyou are not in the room.,.

Okay really? That's what password locks are for. If you have a gun in your house, don't keep it loaded and lock it up, if you have porn on your iPad, don't let your kids play with it. A naked woman is only natural. How did we start wearing clothes anyways?

You make many valid points. I would just add though that adults are also being constantly being exposed to more and more violence. If a current autopsy scene from CSI were shown twenty years ago most people would throw up yet here we are seeing this every night now it seems, many while they eat their dinner on a tray. A conditioning process has occurred as with all things human related and we adapt. I am not passing judgement, simply pointing it out how attitudes change over time and entertainment always pushes the boundaries to get attention. We seem to survive.

Yup, boundaries to move as a society. Still, not everyone goes and watches the latest SAW movie (I don't, I hate slashers). You don't see me demanding movie theaters don't show these movies though. I vote with my money by not going. You can do the same with your iPad.

When are people going to realize that Playboy is not porn. Maybe they should ask themselves what the difference is between porn and artistic nudity.

Do you not realize that you can just fire up a browser right this very second and go to p***h**.com or youp***.com? Heck head on over to flickr.com and search for tags titled nude or artistic nudity. You will find a HECK of a lot more stuff there right this very second and probably worse than what you would see in any Playboy. At least with a subscription model its somewhat controlled and the content is not even that bad.

People need to get a grip. I think showing war footages, protests where people get harmed heck even showing running of the bulls where people get gouged is more damaging long term if you ask me.

Well then parents shouldn't purchase products (iPad in this case) for their kids that allow adult content! Do these same parents that b*tch and moan also buy premium adult cable channels and then complain to the Cable Operator or Congress?! Do you see parents anywhere complaining to Sony that their vcrs, dvd players, and bluray devices allow the playback of adult content?

There will ALWAYS be adult content on ANY and ALL kind of visual content (paper, video, etc). Don't like it? Don't buy it.

I'm not looking to buy the PB app but people need to take responsibility for their own beliefs and parenting.

I agree that Playboy is not porn. I still think the way Playboy treats women is nasty but you're right, it isn't porn. Most of the discussion on here has been more widely about porn in general.

That is a good question though. I don't know if I could put into words what the difference is. I know it when I see it though. What would you say it was?
