It’s amazing that people like you reject science. Neither one of us is an epidemiologist. The difference between us is that I believe the scientists, and you believe the politicians. The scientists tell is what to do to stop this virus and how bad this virus will be if we don’t starve it by sheltering in place. The numbers between 1.6 million and 2.2 million were announced by the most prominent American epidemiologists. Those are not my numbers.

Comparing Coronavirus to the common flu is ignorant. The flu mortality rate is highly overstated. I get the flu every year even though I get vaccinated. I have never seen a doctor for the flu. I’m sure tens of millions of Americans never see a doctor for the flu. So, the official flu death rate is much lower than 0.1% because a lot more people get the flu annually than those who get tested for the flu and test positive.

The Coronavirus is at least 10 times as deadly as the flu. It’s very likely the Coronavirus is 50 times as deadly, and it’s dozens of times more contagious than the flu. Without mitigation, the Coronavirushas a potential to kill 100 times as many Americans as the flu. Additionally, the Coronavirus is already mutating, so having been infected today, may not provide any immunity in a year or two. This means that we may have millions of people dying from Coronavirus every year in the US alone.

The only way to defeat the Coronavirus is to starve it to death. This is exactly what the Chinese did by shutting down Wuhan (over 60 million people) for 3 months. China has completely reopened their economy now, and there haven’t been any deaths from Coronavirus in China in the past three weeks.

China did not completely close things down, they had food delivery and grocery delivery going.

Besides, what was done in China can not happen in the United States, period.

As for China’s numbers, I would not take them at face value and to be real and thus that the cases and deaths have completely stoped with them opening things back up slowly like they are.

Now, if you want to stay home until this virus is gone, feel free, but that would mean you are staying home for the rest of your life until you are dead as the virus will remain on this planetas long as humans are on it.

Wow I can’t believe we can’t even have a news story about Apple stores reopening without invoking bitter fights about the virus. No one even bothered to ask or mention how Apple is going to handle disinfecting the devices. The BIGGEST spread of germs are in places like Apple stores where everyone is touching the devices on display. I’m assuming when they reopen they will no longer have devices out for people to touch and play with...

What might be a better idea is if they require everyone to sanitize their hands before entering the store (with provided hand sanitizer) and people in the store can check out a sanitized device to play with and then when they are done they hand it back to a store associate who sends it to the back room get disinfected again for the next guest to use.

I suspect, however, what will really happen is NONE of the display models will be available for people to touch and play with, and Apple will be focusing their store efforts on exactly what the article mentions, repairs.. And pickups.

Sad because I want to play with the new iPad case and see if it’s worth $300. I already have the Logitech one which was $150, but it only has ONE angle which is tilted up 30 degrees and it drives me nuts.. ok now I’m going off topic, but seriously can we get back to talking about Apple devices and rumors and leave politics out of all this?!
Apple will realize that they can sell gadgets online without stores. If you want to play with the new keyboard, buy it and play with it for 2 weeks. Then, either keep it or return it.

Personally, I’m not going to an Apple store ever until there’s a vaccine and this virus is suppressed. Perhaps, this will never happen. I don’t need to be in a crowded place risking my health to try a gadget. I can buy it, try it, and return it if I don’t like it.

I predict that Apple will downsize their retail footprint dramatically. They can keep some retail locations and convert them to repair shops, but they don’t really need the vast retail space to be able to sell their products. The time of the pervasive retail presence is over.

The problem is you're not a scientist. Scientists know that good science occurs on a time scale of years. To have a paper that describes an expriement properly peer-reviewed and revised takes easily 6 months, 1 year is not uncommon. To get a drug from discovery to market is a decade.

As a scientist, I place little trust in what "science" is saying right now. There simply is not enough time to do things correctly and think things through. You'll find that, after the dust settles, a lot of unfounded assumptions are being made.

If you trust science, you need to read Retraction Watch. They're already documented a major COVID paper being corrected because it was based on wrong, unpublished models and other COVID papers being retracted.

You can dig deeper into this as well. In the lack of concrete evidence, scientists easily get political, i.e. people saying person A's conclusions are untrustworthy because he is a competitor or is from a lesser institution. And you have the fact that the stuff you read about is severely dumbed down by the media.

70 people liked that post. Unbelievable stupidity.

My memory might be deceiving me, but I think those kinda people invaded the forum after the iPhone came out. Then they started crying about everything they were offended by being political and demanded a special forum be created to accommodate their sensitivities. It's kinda funny to watch some completely mundane articles end up having the comments shoved into PRSI because of it. They are the most sensitive snowflakes ever and keep crying and whining about the smallest things.

Hey snowflakes, Apple stores are private property and the owner of said property wants you to wear a mask when you enter. You might think their reasoning is unfounded. You might think you can protest it and demand they accomodate your desires, but they're a business and they don't have to. Besides I thought you guys were pro-business and were big fans of businesses being left to do whatever they wanted! Right? Businesses are practically god! Why are you complaining all of the sudden?

Perfect example of distorting data with charts. One, deaths and cases can never go down. What you need to plot is new deaths and new cases.

Second, diseases spread exponentially. Therefore, the Y-axis needs to be a logarithmic scale. In fact, the images show you specifically chose the wrong scale, since a log scale is available.

The combination of those two presentation mistakes serves to visually minimize any trends. If you properly present the data, it would be obvious that COVID is indeed slowing down.
Nah, not in the U.S. The biggest outbreak in NYC is slowing down, which is skewing the national trend. Outside of New York it is very much on the rise in the U.S. Not surprising really.

Can't wait to step over the bodies of the Apple Store employees in the mall to get the very latest iPhone.

We have to get the economy going again, so why not do so in the most cruel and irresponsible way possible? After all, cases and mortality are only climbing in Cali. What are some deceased Apple Store employees when compared to healthy Apple Stock?

As a shareholder I would like to see Apple use its huge cash reserves to wait longer before drawing employees and customers into the malls and the Apple Stores!

The apple stores and the malls are still closed in Califiornia, please get the facts right before posting

Again, there's a severe bias in testing, in that people only tested those who were showing obvious symptoms, or were associated with those showing severe symptoms. Further, the tests only showed those who were currently infected.

Antibody tests have shown that for a county with 1,000 confirmed cases, the rate of those with antibodies are 54x higher. Potentially, you're overestimating mortality rates by a similar factor.

We use number of deaths per million people as measure. USA is at 230 deaths per millions while Spain is at 550. I saw somewhere that the death rate for NYC was >1500 per millions but I need confirmation on that.

Death rate per million is insensitive to testing procedure but biased in terms of reporting deaths as COVID-19 related.

The paper you refer to detect antibodies in 1.5% of the population and if that infection pressure gave 128 reported deaths (I Googled "COVID-19 santa clara deaths") you can expect up to 8500 deaths in Santa Clara when all people has gotten the disease. Will the hopsital system manage this and is this an acceptable death burden for USA?

Are 30-50 million ruined financial lives worth it? Why don't you believe we should shut it down every winter when the flu kills from 40,000-70,000 people in the US. Worldwide the flu kills from 300,000 to 650,000 per year. Why not shut the economy down every year?

I'll wait for your answer.

Because what you wrote is that 250,000 equals shutting down the economy for the greater good (in your eyes at least).
I believe individuals in USA is especially hurt financially due to poor social security. Couple that with insurance based healthcare systems that depends on an employment. Of course people get desperate.

COVID-19 is a stress test on the deep organisation of a society and a societies values. It seems like feelings run hotter in the USA than in my country and it is probably due to differences in social security and equal access to the hospital systems.

1. Jeffrey Shaman is a professor at Columbia University. Go look at his Curriculum Vitae and see what he has said. He supports that many more people have had this and didn't even know it.

2. No doubt many more people would have gotten this if there was no shelter in place. No doubt many more people would have died since that is also simple math to figure out.

3. Is it worth if if 20 million lives are ruined financially? 50 million? 100 million? Each person has to answer what their number is.

4. Had you read what scientists say that a high majority are asymptomatic then you would understand they also do not need to see a doctor if they have this.

5. You still have no clue about the flu. Very few if any get the flu that are asymptomatic. IF you get the flu you know it and likely get tested for it. There are numerous people who were shocked that they had covid-19 and never knew it.

6. No it isn't 10 times deadlier than the flu. Let us know when you actually do the math correctly.

It’s about 4% so far in America. It was over 10% in Italy, Spain, and the U.K. it was 3.5% in China.

We won’t know until we have tested everyone several times and have counted all the deaths from Coronavirus for 2020.

However, if there’s no vaccine, it’s safe to assume that 75% of Americans will be infected. Even if the death rate is 0.5%, we are taking over a million dead from this virus. That’s more Americans than died in all of the wars that Americans participated in since the founding of this country.

You are being deliberately misleading using chinese death % because the ccp authorities massively under report deaths to save face on a national and international stage , boost morale and project strength in controlling the outbreak.

I still think it is TOO early to open stores but in this tim cook era Apple is more interested in keeping the board happy adding to its trillion dollar value.
Consumerism and profits take higher priority than peoples health..

"Waaahhh, I'm a sociopath and hate the idea of even slightly inconveniencing myself in order to help protect vulnerable people in my community. Won't someone please think of the sociopaths???"

Seriously, one thing this pandemic has really hit home for me is just how many sociopaths there are walking among us, not giving a **** about anyone but themselves.

Actually more Sociopathic Narcissists if one was to look at the DSM-5.

It‘s being growing over the past 40 years. The President didn’t create it. He simply let them feel “normal” as they were like him. Now the Jeanie is out of the bottle.

I’m sure Apple Retail employees are happy to have a job, but jeez... I wouldn’t want to work in those conditions Lol. I’d rather do At Home Advisor / Chat Support.
