Adding MLB and NBA is a great first step
If (hopefully soon) NFL and Hulu + were contracted I'd run to buy an Apple TV

Yeah...I've read/heard this line for the past 4 years on my cable company's MLB Extra Innings package that I pay $160/season for!!! Guess how many come in HD? About 1 game (out of 10-15) per DAY! 1!
Guess how many Red Sox games I've seen in HD on this system? 0.
MLB and the way they "package" these things sucks. Big time.
Not really. Wake me up when they start showing English League 1 football onTV.
In the New York/North Jersey area, FIOS and Cablevision (Optimum Online) subscribers can watch Yankees baseball online (for an ADDITIONAL yearly cost, of course)MLB has given Rogers the territorial rights to all of Canada, so all Jays games are blocked online in Canada, which is incredibly stupid given the size of the country.
As to the point "why do they black out locally": many people don't want to pay for cable and would cancel it if they could get the games on their mobile devices/computers. This is just protecting the cable companies advertising profits, and the rights fees MLB teams can exact. That makes sense to me, but the cable companies should offer a streaming add-on for their subscribers. Win-win.
Currently watching the Mets and Astros in HD on theTV. In all honesty, it looks great. For any baseball fan this is incredible.
I do have a 40mbps connection, probably makes a difference.

If you live in Boston (as your name suggests) it's going to be blacked out. It's probably 720p as that's what the AppleTV outputs as.1080 or 720 or other HD?
I can't stand watching baseball in Low Def in a square on my 55" HDTV!
Would be awesome if you could tell me if you can watch NESN (New England Sports Network) and Red Sox in HD. I might just go buy an AppleTV if the picture quality is good!

That's your cable provider's fault. DirecTV shows every game in HD. Basically the MLB package works like this, just like the NHL package:
You want to watch the Red Sox game. It's playing on NESN-HD. You turn to NESN-HD and watch it there. If they're playing the Rangers and you want to see their feed (for some ungodly reason), turn on FSN Dallas HD and watch it there. There's no special "MLB" section of channels, you just tune to the channel it's on. DirecTV carries ALL of the channels, and that's why I'm getting it here in the next few weeks.
Well, I would imagine for me to get DTV just to watch a few dozen Red Sox games is gonna cost me quite a bit of money right? DTV has contracts if I remember correctly....I would only watch the games April-October and we're not tv junkies that need DTV for other stuff.
Basically if DTV was cheap enough, I could use it to supplement my Charter. But it's possible that the AppleTV is a better value ($99 + $120/season)...although it's not true HD.720 is so 2002.

As noted by Business Insider, Major League Baseball has announced that live and archived streams of baseball games are now available through the Apple TV. The new services are available through a software update released today as part of the iOS 4.3 rollout. The service requires a subscription to MLB.tv, which is available in packages costing $19.99 per month ($99.99 per year) or $24.99 per month ($119.99 per year).
The update also adds access to the National Basketball Association's League Pass feature, providing free access to scores and stats while also offering the option to upgrade to receive live and archived video feeds of games. Video pricing is set at $64.95 for access to watching games for up to seven teams througout the season, or $99.95 for access to all teams' games.
Other improvements include Dolby 5.1 sound for Netflix streaming, a redesigned onscreen keyboard, and new photo slideshow transition options.

With special offers, DirecTV is around $40-60/mo (with a 2 year contract), then add the sports pack + your MLB Extra Innings subscription during those months. You could keep your current cable provider for internet. If you're in Boston, no matter if you get MLB Extra Innings or MLB.tv, they're going to be blacked out so that you have to watch them on local channels anyways.
SWEET! I really hope they make this for Formula 1 (and in Canada). I'd cancel my cable immediately.
Nice update for the AppleTV. I just recently bought the 2nd gen for my bedroom and have MLB.TV installed on my PS3 in the living room. Now I can watch it upstairs.
Maybe one day (wishing) they will have Hulu on the AppleTV.
Easy to find out. Go to www.MLB.tv and scroll to the bottom where it says "To find out which Club's live games are blacked out in your current location, click here". It'll tell you what teams are blacked out. I live in Austin, so both the Astros & Rangers are blacked out. My favorite team is the St. Louis Cardinals, so I'm fine unless they play the Astros. I can watch any Red Sox game as well (they'd have to be my AL favorite) unless they play in Houston.yea...that's too expensive even if it was my only provider. DTV's MLB Extra Innings is about $40 more than buying it through my cable provider.
Basically I spend $50/month right now on cable tv and get all the HD I need. MLB is $160 extra.
I think I will try the AppleTV and see where it gets me for Red Sox. I live in CT...in a county where NOBODY has NESN on cable company lines.
