I've been hoping that I could sell my Thunderbolt Display and Dell 27" 4K display to maybe pay for 2/3 of whatever new $999 display apple releases. I figure worst case, it's $1299.
HOLY **** WHAT THE ****
I get that it's for pros. The thing is, I AM a pro. Pro photographer and web designer both. For a decent size agency as well as freelance. And this is so far out of our reach it's hilarious. I was simply hoping for an updated 4K monitor that would serve as a thunderbolt 3 hub. Take the Thunderbolt display. Make it 4k. Switch all thunder bolt ports to thunder bolt 3 except for one or 2 for legacy use. The end.

You are a professional, just not in the professions that need this kind of display. Having just spent Friday at Cinegear Expo and looked at the $45,000 Flander’s Scientific Monitor, I was super excited to see an alternative I could easily justify.

I had an ASUS 4K monitor a couple of years ago. Cost £1,000. I got rid of it within a few months because it was the most frustrating thing ever. Aside from brightness, volume etc. not being controlled by macOS (no integration, unlike the LG UltraFine ones), I had to unplug the HDMI cable from the Mac Pro (Late-2013) when I started it up, and type in my password on the login screen without it or it wouldn't work at all.

There's a reason people want an Apple monitor but don't want to pay $6,000. A replacement for the 27-inch Thunderbolt Display would be welcome, because most third-party monitors don't provide what we want as "prosumers".

Amazing display but Apple is really out of their minds pricewise.
I am still using my 30" ACD. I bought two for $3k back when they launched. Now I would have to spend $10k. What a joke and a shame. They won't sell many. Pro's are not that stupid.

Not when they launched you did not. It was $3,299.

Some films are shot at 120fps although, due to the increased costs, it’s never caught on.

Peter Jackson released The Hobbit in 48 FPS HFR. I know of no film released or shot in 120 FPS for display at 120 FPS (120FPS and higher are used for slow motion). If you have an example of a film released at 120 FPS, I would love to know about it.

The stand alone costs what my 27" Thunderbolt display cost brand new with a stand. I get this monitor is out of this world, but that's comical, nonetheless.

Another angle: it only seems absurd because Apple is offering them separately. Had they simply included the stand, but priced it at $5,999, it would have felt completely normal.

So I guess kudos to them for offering a $200 VESA adapter?

It’s not a gaming monitor.
Nor is iPad Pro a gaming tablet. Still 100Hz is superior (more fluid motion) and that's the reason they use the frequency in other products. I guess the only reason why higher frequencies are not supported in the new display is that it would be even more expensive at those dimensions / pixel density.

I have no problem with Pro gear coming out, that’s great news. I just expect as much attention to THE REST OF US.
  1. Are you planing to get the new Mac Pro and just need an affordable monitor to use with it?
  2. Does it have to come from Apple, Inc.?
Aren't there other monitors out there that will suit your needs? Even if Apple made one for THE REST OF US, it would probably come with an Apple tax. I don't mind paying it for a machine that will run the OS, but if I could get a decent monitor (when an external monitor is required) for less from somewhere else) I certainly would.

That well known display standard resolution of "6K" what is it for other than extraction of money?
It is for professionals who work in Color Correction, using 4K and greater content. Most every feature film shot today.

Just shows how good and pro you falsely think to be. There is always a level up.
Excuse me? He is as much as a pro as every other professional who uses these machines to make money. Is the term pro restricted to people who work in high end Hollywood studios? According to whom, you? this is extremely stupid.

They over-engineered the stand for the $6000 monitor. Then they realized that the stand would go to waste for many customers who would detach it and store it in the box...forever. Plus pay $200 more for the adapter to hang the monitor.

$999 for a Pro stand?! You can buy a whole MacBook Air laptop with that money.

It just keeps getting worse and worse under Tim Cook.
Well, you could, but I think the MacBook Air would make a terrible stand for the Pro Display XDR.

I love the folks on here chirping up, Pros need this! It's made for Pros! Pros will pay any amount of money for anything with the word "Pro" because PROOOOOOOS. Y'all are very clearly not "pros" and I've no idea why you feel compelled to speak for those that are.

In reality, the bulk of creative work is done by freelancers, who don't have "a giant Hollywood studio" footing the bill for their equipment. I get hired onto a job, I show up with everything — computer, monitor, scanner, hard drives, software...I even have my own desk, and zero percent of it is or was paid for by a studio. Yes, no doubt Pixar will be happy to drop a few million dollars upgrading their rendering farms. Ditto Adobe's engineers, who will be keen on maxing out all 28 cores on the new Mac Pro, but those folks represent a tiny, tiny fraction of all the people who are collectively producing media. Even small-to-mid size production companies, who might invest in a certain amount of their own equipment, are going to have a difficult time justifying costs in this neighborhood. So I don't know who you're talking about when you say "this is for 'Pros', because at the moment, it's really just for rich people.

I was ready for $1999. Potentially I may have considered at $2499 given the specs. But this is so far out that now I don't need to consider at all.

Still looking for a viable option for the 27" Cinema LED display which works so nice with 2018 MBP (including volume and brightness adjustments).

LG, HP, Dell, etc. They all make "4k" displays <$800 such as LG 27UK850-W or HP Z27.

ALSO, when Microsoft launched the Surface Studio, they included a hinge that does basically the same thing as Apple's, except more efficiently, given that its range of motion is significantly greater, to the point that it can lay down on the desk. And Apple over here totally straight faced, claiming that a similar hinge SOMEHOW COSTS US $1000. Anyone who thinks that Apple has $1000 invested in the design of A SIMPLE HINGE...

It’s a shame it’s not 120fps.

In what world would you think any hardware currently available would provide 120fps in 6k? In my world i'm going to pretend you were joking because someone who would make this statement legit has a lot of things they need to figure out about themselves.

Like...damn.
