What's the deal with the magsafe charging? I didn't get to watch the live stream.
Yea I'm confused too. I don't know how much they said in the announcement, but the live blog didn't explain it very well

I hope I can turn it off. Dont need it and battery killer.
Me too. Apple had a toggle to turn off 3G when it was first introduced and still today you can disable 4G by selecting 3G for voice & data so hopefully we’ll both be happy & be able to turn off 5G.

I’m a very light a data user I am on my phone, just the occasional news headlines or wikipedia search plus syncing contacts and calendar and a bit of mostly text-only WhatsApp. Now that this post reminded me that the option to force 3G is still there I’m tempted to force my 11 Pro Max onto 3G for a few days purely out of curiosity to see what it’s like. I have this nagging suspicion that I might not even notice much difference!

Yeah there is that. By the time you upgrade to 128 GB on the 12 there is only a $150 difference. Still doesn't seem like the Pro is worth it to me.

I hear you, it's just a little additional "value" (er, if we can really use that word with $1000 phones ...) for the Pro.

FWIW, I'm all in on the 12 Pro Max, we take a ton of photos, in all sorts of environments, day, night, from boats/cars, etc., so I'm looking for the most camera improvements. I did a larger phone back in the 6S days (with a Plus model), mostly for the extra camera perk, somewhat for the better battery, though I've been pretty happy with the X size, I'm also looking forward to the larger display as well.

New iPhones look fine, but a rather underwhelming presentation . . .

Your post doesn’t explain why feel that way other than commenting on the iPhone. In retort, this was the first major iPhone Keynote that was all-digital, it definitely doesn’t have the Vibe having a live audience, stage, the demos are obviously much different, the list goes on. In terms of actually demoing the new iPhones, Apples marketing has always been very unique, But I think they delivered really well with the keynote, even if it’s not how it will be from years past moving forward.

Why the hell didn't they include the new touch ID that they put on the iPad in the new iPhones? I'm way more likely to be using a Mask with my iPhone than with my iPad. Dumb!!
Exactly why I won't be buying. I'm still rocking the iPhone 7, I don't need a fancy screen, fancy camera, etc. The two things I've been wanting either one of, but ideally both of, is:

- Dual touchID and faceID. Neither alone is perfect, but if it's got to be one or the other then touch-ID wins hands down, for me. And that's been my standpoint way before the introduction of face masks everywhere.
- All-day battery in a iPhone 7 size phone. This is a bit of a stretch, because today's technology limits this being feasible (I always use the iPhone XR / iPhone 11 as a benchmark for all day battery).

If an iPhone came out with just one of those, I'd buy straight away, but still waiting...

It's still Qi wireless charging, just now with magnets to "snap" things into the correct location. Also introduces the ability to attach magnetic accessories to the iPhone (like Apple's outrageously expensive leather card holder).

Depends whether LIDAR has value to one or not. Faster focus and augmented reality? Not really clear on where I’d use it.

£1099 for the Pro Max 128GB is a fairer price here in the UK, but still expensive. Looks like prices for the Pro Max have fallen by £100 across the board which is good news.

You don’t need to. They mentioned it in the demo - the software stack automatically defaults to 4G until you need the 5G, at which point it’s supposedly insta-on, for the express purpose of saving battery. If there’s really no notable lag in activating the 5G, then that seems like a really smart design decision to me.

And incidentally, I think my space grey Xs is getting traded in for a blue 11 Pro. Might buy the wife an 11 mini as well...

They really couldn't shrink the notch? Was hoping for a 12 Max, maybe a 6.5. No really need for a Pro Max as now the 12 has OLED, just wanted a bigger phone. Really, they had to make a Mini.

I’m really confused here, does the 12 Pro Max have a better Wide sensor than the 12 Pro? If so that’s a big **** up for Apple, not everyone wants a giant ****ing phone!
Well...I guess you can say it’s the ProRAW-gative of Apple to differentiate the cameras in the Pro and Pro Max as they see fit.

Ok bad joke.

I'm in the same boat. Haven't been this excited about a new iPhone for years, if ever. The camera improvements look amazing... 87% improvement of light gathering for the Max, faster aperture (f/1.7) on the wide camera, and greater optical zoom (65mm) would have sold me on their own. But Apple ProRAW is a game-changer. I've gone back and forth between shooting in RAW (which gives me more flexibility in post-production) and Apple's HEIC format, which allows me to take advantage of the smart HDR, deep fusion, etc. Now I can have the best of both worlds.

Sure, for those that want the absolute best camera (although you now have to go to the 12 Pro Max for that). It just seems like the 12 Pro doesn't offer much over the regular 12. If the 12 Pros came with a Pro Motion display then this lineup would make a lot more sense.

Lidar is a technology in search of a problem. In this case the problem is how do we differentiate the pro and normal 12.

But I have to get the pro. After telephoto on a phone I can never go back.

It was an underwhelming presentation because the phone wasn't that big a step forward especially if you aren't in a 5G area. 5G and MagSafe, wooohoo. Had nothing to do with being a digital presentation

Lidar in itself is an extremely interesting technology. It’s what makes self driving cars possible. My friends and I even made a robot waiter that can wander around the restaurant delivering food to the tables while avoiding live obstacles like humans walking across of it, all with the help of a lidar scanner. But how is this tech gonna make a phone better? Only time would tell I guess.

OMG this "4x zoom range" garbage is infuriating! It's still the same 2x telephoto lens on the non-Max.
Whew! Thought it was just me. Probably my fault for listening to rumors but the idea of having 4x or 5x zoom was really appealing. Any idea what zoom range really means? If you zoom out by 2x isn’t that basically the same as the standard wide lens? So basic it’s what we have with the 11 Pro?

They should phrase it as “4x/5x TOTAL zoom range”. Meaning going from the ultra-wide all the way to the telephoto, you’re effectively zooming in 4x/5x. But it’s super misleading. They should have just said “2x/2.5x optical zoom on the telephoto lens”.
