Why did it have to happen someday? There is no benefit to getting rid of the headphone jack unlike getting rid of floppy disks or CD drives.
Says you. Apple clearly envisions a wireless future. This is nothing new. No one is forcing you to buy a new iPhone, right?

You are partly mistaken on this. it is true some of the cost of the subsidy is built into your monthly bill, but the US carriers took huge hits to their bottom line paying iPhone subsidies over and above what they recovered in subscriber fees, particularly in the early days of the iPhone. During the early days when AT&T was the sole iPhone provider, they got just killed by this. There are some articles here and here. There were even reports of carriers secretly encouraging employees to steer customers to Android phones so they could avoid paying Apple's higher subsidy rates (article here).

This is a different subsidy than we are discussing. This subsidy was paid to Apple, not the user.

User subsidies on devices is a common wireless carrier practice that goes back to the very early days of the industry. I used to sell Nokia 101 phones to people for $.99 when the full retail was actually $399 IIRC. And yes, the carrier did absorb this cost within their rate plan.

With that being said, if the carrier is no longer providing a user-end subsidy, then they should be decreasing the rate plan by as much. But from what I see, Verizon isn't offering me a $25 reduced monthly plan to make up for the lack of a subsidized device. So when I upgrade, I'll be renewing my 2-year commitment in order to keep my subsidized phone.

I can objectively say that this is a okay upgrade. For someone looking for a new iPhone this year, I don't think they'll be disappointed. But for me, someone that has been eyeing some Android handsets, it isn't enough to entice me to buy. I'm looking forward to seeing Google's Nexus (Pixel) offerings later this year. Google has been doing some really cool things with software lately that I'm pretty jazzed about. We'll see how things look between Apple and the other manufacturers by November of this year. I'm not fueling the Apple hate train, but does anyone else agree?

No. Goodbye then. We don't care. People that love Apple products are here for the long haul. Go get you some SamCrap or GoogleCrap. #batteryissues

Agreed. iPhone's short battery life makes plugging in to power & headphones at the same time a must for any long term listening. I expect a big market for dongles, docks & cases that let you listen & charge at the same time.
Well, the iPhone 7 seems to have massively better battery life.

Nah, that's not courage at all. That's just yada yada complaining like many engage in here everyday. Way too easy to be considered courage - there are no potential adverse consequences from your actions.

REAL courageousness is standing up against being one of the stupid consumers accepting the price increase you spoke of earlier, and instead taking a chance by buying a phone from a different manufacturer. That has potential consequences.
No- a handful of people trying to "prove it with their wallets" are not going to make any meaningful impact on sales or corporate decisions. But when people are vocal about their issues, they bring them to light for others who may not have noticed. Do you remember when Apple lowered the price of the first iPhone from $600 to $200 and people who had just paid $600 were pissed and complained? Apple made an unprecedented offer to give money back to customers who had purchased it at the higher price within a certain time frame. Had people just sucked it up and gone about their days, NOTHING would have been done. To advocate to fellow consumers that they should just shut up and buy or shut up and don't buy is just asking to be taken advantage of at every opportunity.

Does the new iPhone not come with speakers?
Think you misunderstood that one. I meant today there is not one but two DAC in the phone one for the speakers and one for the external connector. There will only be one for the speaker in the future.

From the photos, it doesn't look like you can charge while listening to headphones. If true, that's a pretty huge downside. The only option would be to spend more money on wireless headphones of some kind.

Or you could buy a wireless charging pad for the phone for $29 or less at home depot....

I mean, if we're talking charging the phone overnight on a bedside table.

Oh... you think rates should go down over time?

That would be great... but how often does that actually happen?

Most things are more expensive now than they were 5 years ago. I wouldn't expect the evil cell carriers to be any different :D

Yes, many things go down over time. You seem to not understand how technology works. Are you paying more or less for a 55" LCD than you were 5 years ago?

Edit: Research Technology Life Cycle for an explanation if needed.

The SE becomes a compelling alternative with earphone jack and a nice form factor for the adventurer. Wondering how Apple will handle the jack issue on the upcoming macbook updates; I hope without the need of a myriad of adapters.

Why are so many people charging their phones and listening to music?? Do you all really do this so much? If so, why? If I can charge my phone then it's likely i'm somewhere I can use another device - eg my home cinema, my home hi-fi or my home recording studio setup...why would I be using headphones in my iPhone if I have access to these?

When I'm travelling, those long stop overs, using a battery bank to charge my phone while I listen to music.

The price of goods can go down over time due to a variety of factors.

But the price of services rarely go down.

What do you mean "rake in billions of extra sales"? They're throwing in a pair of lightning headphones and a FREE FREAKING ADAPTOR in the box. It'll cost them money if anything.

I do not understand why everyone is so salty over the headphone jack. Good riddance.

Let's help.

At the very least, people are looking at a hassle. No?

So while it may be "good riddance" for you who may not have an extreme use scenario (charging and listening to music) as some of the forum members are reporting here as well as undoubtedly a lot more across the world, these people would not look at it as good riddance. Some of the joys of iPhones and Apple products in general are levels of thoughtfulness. Real innovation would have been to be able to accommodate whatever they wanted to within the same space and yet have the audio jack. This is, at the moment, really not similar to the removal of floppy drives or optical drives from Apple computers. It is a mobile device, if they really wanted to do something innovative than just take the easiest way out (removing the jack), they should then have bundled the wireless AirPods, then the same level of functionality would have been maintained but the user would not have been left to choose between charging or listening to music.

Classic use cases are cars, where anyone with an iPhone 7 will now have one more aspect to deal with, the adapter, and they cannot charge and use the port for anything else same time. So, before you go all arrogant decisive for a huge number of people in the world, please explain what would someone do if they want an iPhone 7 for all other features, but also want to connect the phone to the car, and have no 3.5mm jack for it anymore. Bluetooth, in SOME car stereos, is not an option for streaming, it is only there for calling purposes. So... have some respect for the other people who use their devices differently than you do.

The only issue you have with the 3.5mm jack is that it's old? That's it? So you want to have less options on your phone because it's old. GSM is also old and yet your iPhone supports it.

Why do you think that there's a separate DAC for digital signal coming from Bluetooth than there is for digital signal coming from direct file data? Sounds like you actually have a terrible system and/or terrible seat of ears.

Yup, you got me. Terrible system and terrible ears. Since all I do all day long is mix and record and compose film scores and music and do foley and dialogue editing and sound design all day long. Yup... that's me, terrible set of ears. And no, I'm not complaining that it's old, it's time to just try something different, ya know, advance the technology forward. Be open-minded about this stuff, dude.

Not for announcements they shouldn't. Apple can make whatever they want to make, whenever they want. Consumers should only feel entitled with products they've purchased. Otherwise, vote with your wallet and go with a Korean handset or something.
Geez, who died and made you Putin?

I think Apple consumers should complain as much as they want, and Apple should completely ignore them, like they always do.

You didn't have to pay full price then... and you don't have to now either.

Contracts and "subsidies" may be gone... but payment plans took their place.

You don't HAVE to spend $650-850 on a new iPhone.

Well it's not that simple. I will have to ditch my unlimited plan or pay an extraordinary amount. Now I have to select a share plan with less data. There are some positives - unlimited voice and text, and you do have an option to save money if you don't want to upgrade. But I personally don't like it for me.

I just wanted to let everyone know that this thread will no longer work past post #1,000 without an adapter.

Whip your dongle out!

The adaptor shows how little faith Apple have in removing the headphone jack.

Imagine Apple under Jobs including an adaptor.

Remember how 'Freaked out' people got when they took out the cd/dvd drives out of the MacBook air/MacBook/MacBook Pro/etc? They sold a separate USB CD drive knowing it wasn't necessary...

If there is no future for certain technologies, Apple isn't afraid to commit without it. The traditional headphone-jack technology is older than cell phones itself, it's time to let go.
