Why do you even need a notch? Why not just surround the webcam with the screen?

I bet they are "easing into" a notch with Face ID, which needs the extra space to accommodate that. Compare that to this generation having a cut-out camera or smaller notch and then going to a larger notch later. People would freak out even more than they are now (which is very entertaining to watch).

I just don't understand one thing. If the new processor is so power efficient, why they put it to the body 3x thicker than on prevoius (hungry) Intel model? Or did they do it for the first gen and for any other generation they just cut 1 mm in heigh to make every new generation more attractive than previous? Anyway, it would be a good plan for selling these things for the next decade without any real innovation.
its the identical thickness of the 13-inch Intel/M1 Pro....

it starts from a horribly expensive price

I have to pass.

$1499 was an entirely unrealistic expectation.

I had hoped they would have kept the $1799 price (which is what they used to charge for their upper tier MBP). $1999 is not bad considering what all it includes (also taking into consideration the state of the prices of chip supplies and the like).
it is bad because they will keep increasing prices. At this rate, Macbooks will start from 5K in a few years time.

Interesting... Thickness is the same according to specs?

why do we need proprietary chargers. I am not a fan of the new ports, especially since they removed one usb-c. But could live with those.

but getting back to the magsafe is stupid. Even now that EU pushes towards standards.

2015-2021: "Too thin! It's not pro anymore! Stop sacrificing performance for thinness!"
2021: "This looks like a laptop from early 2010s. I like the old design better."
It's the curves that make it look like the 2007 MacBook not the thickness per se.

Perhaps we can talk about the $700 price increase for all this legacy stuff
I was just thinking how well priced these computers are in comparison to PC workstation laptops.

Just ordered mine and cant wait to get it.

That lower price was only for the old 2-port slow 13” MBP that was replaced by the 13” M1 MBP. The real-deal 13” MBP started around $1799. The new 14” starts at $1999 son only $200 more money for more MacBook.
Didn't know that, thanks. I think that's far more justifiable considering the huge leaps of improvements in every way. Still it's $2000 for a laptop, makes a lot more people (like me) question if they're really the target audience for this product.

Performance is mind blowing and yet all people can talk about is the notch.
Remember Apple is very much a image fashion brand. Yes, those who just care about performance should be stoked. But lots of people just buy them based on how they look.

It's more only in the sense that outside of full screen, the main desktop occupies greater vertical resolution than 16:10. I agree with your statement though that the menu bar space is effectively less due to the notch invasion but the desktop space is larger as a result.

Did they mention this in the presentation? I sort of blacked out between the notch unveil and the price.

So to run all those monitors on an M1 Max, they must be plugged into the machine? They sure didn't mention anything about daisy-chaining monitors or using a dock.

As completely impressive the performance of these things are, and as much as I was planning on trading my M1 MBA in for one of these, I find myself just wanting a 15" macbook air with its current design! I'm sad to say I think I'll be keeping my air!
