I wonder what else is missing. Seems Apple took great advantage in everyone focusing on the firewire issue.

Didn't Steve Jobs once try to convince us we really didn't need this? I wonder what happened to that one? -1 for Apple's paternalistic attitude.

I guess Steve Jobs finally sees the value of firewire in the entire Macbook line?

I'm glad to see that the oversight was corrected.

The addition of an SD slot and better screen are huge pluses.

It may actually convince me to give the Macbook Pro a chance instead of just buying an iMac.

While I agree with the FW, the lack of an SD slot was also a design oversight that has been far too long in the correction.

Ummmm. "Color gamut"... probably just another buzz-phrase to get the Fanboys excited. It worked for me though.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Color_gamut
In color reproduction, including computer graphics and photography, the gamut, or color gamut (pronounced /ˈɡæmət/), is a certain complete subset of colors. The most common usage refers to the subset of colors which can be accurately represented in a given circumstance, such as within a given color space or by a certain output device. Another sense, less frequently used but not less correct, refers to the complete set of colors found within an image at a given time. In this context, digitizing a photograph, converting a digitized image to a different color space, or outputting it to a given medium using a certain output device generally alters its gamut, in the sense that some of the colors in the original are lost in the process.

slick move

simply rebrand the macbook as a pro by adding firewire

Apple saved themselves the embarrassment of admitting they were wrong. Of course without revealing individual sales figures it's anyone's guess.

Cant help but notice there are some omissions and still lame ass screen resolution but gotta start somewhere.

Glad some have the option at a smaller option. Gotta thank MSFT a bit, now Apple is suddenly discussing affordability and price reductions. Looks like no one is impervious to the economy like many implied.;)

Mac 13" being ordered

Hi

I am currently an XP user who has been looking at macs for quite a while now, reading up on mac os etc, together with the new 13" mac pro released today i am definatly sold on it.

I currently use an iphone 3g so am impressed with Apple, plus big bonus i am a student so with even cheaper pricing (will get 4GB memory and 250Gb hard disk) plus a free ipod touch?!?

Good bye Micro$haft and hello mac os X

Yep, I am one of those people. I paid $1500 for my 13 inch Macbook 2.0, not 2.4, upgraded to 250 GB hard drive...no lit-up keyboard, no firewire, no SD slot...AND that was with a military discount. Yeah, not too happy about it. I do like the fact that I have a removable battery.

Wow, I am completely stunned. I thought this was going to be all about the iPhone and then Apple drops the bombshell. I can now get a macbook for 1099 on student discount with backlit keyboard, firewire 800, updated processor and 8gb of ram capacity. Unbelievable. I'll be purchasing as soon as the first reviews begin surfacing.

I do however, feel really bad for those folks who just bought a macbook. You paid more money for less. I know some friends that are going to be pissed.

Absolutely. But I do have to wonder about the value of higher resolutions on such a small screen.

dang, apple i hate you! this 13"MBP has all the specs i missed. now i have to buy one. but i don't need it. really. and with the edu discount and the free ipod it's a steal.

i need to look for bad things:
1.) no 7200rpm HD. need to see if it's still user replacable and put in a 500GB 7200rpm.

2.) battery not user replacable. not really an issue and i'm sure there will be soon external batteries with mag save plugs.

3.) have to see the screen. maybe the glass can be removed or a matte film can be applied.

4.) no built in g3 but that is a USB thing anyway.

dang...still a great notebook. i guess it all depends on the screen. 80% chance i'll buy one. i guess 1399 edu price + ipod + price for 7200HD. 4GB already in. i will buy snow leopard family pack so there is no reason to wait till SN is included.

This is probably one of the most advantageous offers ever to grace Apple's current lineup, which is simply THE BEST of the whole industry; the revamped MBP 13" is unbeatable in its segment, and the perfect replacement for those G4 12" worshipers.

^this

Today is the day I will replace my 5 year old 12" G4. It has been a great 5 years.

Very Happy

The entry level 13 inch MBP starts at $1899 AUS, that is a $200 price drop. I was ready to order a uMB just last week through work, luckily I decided to wait as the machine I will be getting now is much better.

I am assuming the SD card slot is SD HC right? Why would it not be?

Oh, if you are wondering why it dropped $200, I believe it is to do with the exchange rate. When the uMB was introduced the rate was .60 now its around .80 guessing that has been taken into account.

And what you're not crazy about will now replace FireWire as the #1 complaint of the new MacBook Pro (all models): the non-replaceable battery.

Some will prefer having longer battery life, others will dislike that now they have to pay Apple even more money for its battery replacement service.

As usual, there are many new things to like about the 13-inch MacBook Pro, and some new things to hate.

I can't quite "get" the concern about not having replaceable batteries that some people voice. The last time I felt I needed replaceable batteries in a Mac was with my old Duo.

The new Macs can take 1000 charges; that's like once a day for 3 years before they show degradation. Apple sees them good for five years. I don't know about anyone else here on this board, but who really doesn't upgrade every three years or so anyway...just to enjoy the speed and other improvements??

I'm so happy I waited! This is quite a revision and the battery might be the best part (well price too).

Off I go to the Apple store...

Works fine with me
Chose University of British Columbia for my school.

Weird doesn't work for me at all no matter what Uni I choose. I get "The page you're looking for can't be found." Tried a different browser too. :(

screens of new MBP 13?

The most important reason that I would be buying the MBP was the superiority of it's screen over unibody MB line.

Now that unibody laptops are united in MBP name that that name has a reputation.....

Will Apple get rid of the cheap, narrow viewing angled LCDs of the MBP 13?

If that's the case I'm buying this...

P.S. Silent LCD upgrade in April is a joke, I just saw the screens of the new MB's at Apple store last week and the improvement is not good enough.

to save face over the embarrassment of dropping firewire from the macbook, they cleverly rename it a macbookpro and stick it back in.
VIOLA'

Hmm, yes i wonder why make people buy the aluminium macbook pro 13", so that apple makes a bigger profit. Seriously think about it, new MBP 13">MB, the more MBPs 13" sold the more profit

This too, I bet that apple purposely excluded firewire, a) so that white MBs sell better b) have something to offer customers in the next update, which, wait a minute, it just did.

Personally I consider this update useless, ok cheaper price, wow, seriously it does not change much, renaming it to MBP, stupid it is not as powerful, faster processor, useless in gaming, sd slot, ehh, had it on my old laptop and never used it, i can use usb can't i? Ok firewire, before i got a mac i did not know what is firewire before i got a macbook and saw that there was an issue that it was missing.

MBP 15" update is much more interesting: longer life battery (true its also in new MBP 13"), up 3.06GHZ, up 8GB RAM. True however that it cost 2500 CHF which is too expensive for me to want but hey ill wait for about 2 years and get a new one.

Sounds like a little boy who doesn't know the English language is salty that his computer is no longer the latest and greatest

Welcome aboard - there is also a £60 printer offer that you can take advantage of as well as the ipod offer (same setup as the ipod - buy first & rebate later, printers start at £69)

Worth the extra money?

I was really struggling between my desire for firewire and really wanting the aluminum body. I'm thrilled that I can have both now, and for a lower price! :) So glad I didn't listen to the salesperson last week who said that he didn't think they'd be updating them any time soon!! Without this website I wouldn't have known to wait to see what happened at the WWDC!
I would have really loved to see them at least be able to read BluRay since I still have video taped with AVCHD that I can't do anything with. :( I'm ready to buy one though.
My question is whether it is worth spending the extra $300 for the 2.52 GHz and 4GB for an average user who likes to make iMovies? Any advice would be appreciated. I do get an educator discount.

Has anyone ordered one yet? I'm interested to know what the shipping time is going to be. I really want to order today, but I'm leaving the country for a while and don't want to be stuck with a back-ordered laptop sitting on my front porch.
