I'm absolutely baffled by this. My 2011 iMac is still way more powerful than all the low end windows laptops out there that will be running Windows 10 out of the box. Certainly a 12-core Mac Pro from 2012 should be supported.

I noticed my 2011 Macbook Pro isn't supported on this... Oh well. I'm running Windows 10 on it now just fine, but I am having driver issues. I was hoping this update would solve it, but I guess not.

Cortana works flawlessly on a PC. I'm amazed just how advanced it is compared to Siri and Microsoft have been working on it a fraction of the time compared to how long Apple have been working on Siri since acquiring it. Siri isn't even on the desktop!

Microsoft are doing a demolition job on Apple and showing them the way forward.

It's not about how good it is or works... it's about why would anyone want that on a desktop?

Seriously? My big-honkin, $5000 MacPro from 2011 will not be allowed or supported? Stupidity reigns again...

Back to Parallels VM....

I used Macs in school for years but couldn't afford my own until spring 2008. One of the first things I did was install boot camp because I was nervous using a Mac full-time. I fired up boot camp several times over the next year—mostly to play games. Now I haven't had to use it since 2009. I can't think of a single piece of software, aside from some games, that I would ever need Windows to run.

A few years ago when I got my current job I had to use a PC for a few months before getting my fancy 27" iMac. My productivity was terrible during those months. The only Microsoft products that I have to use daily are Outlook and Lync and both are pretty terrible—at least the 2011 versions. Outlook likes to stop fetching my mail during the day and for some reason I can no longer view team calendars, even when they re-invite me. Lync randomly disconnects without telling me so people can't chat with me. Luckily I've got my team using Trello now which helps!

The only Microsoft thing I really liked was my Xbox but the Xbox One has been a cluster. It's so unstable, surprisingly slow for a newer console, and the software is really clunky. First party games like The Master Chief Collection have been a disaster. Even after countless patches I still have to force quit the game about once an hour or so because matchmaking craps the bed or the menus glitch out and I can't navigate anywhere.

That has pretty much been my experience as well (aside from affording a Mac earlier). Most of my jobs over the years have forced me to be pretty proficient with Windows (or both Mac and Windows), but I've always personally used a Mac because of that productivity advantage. And, while there was a time when there were a few apps on Windows that weren't on the Mac (which made me a bit envious), that hasn't been the case for well over a decade.

Same here... I boot into Windows once in a great while to play a game. And, due to my job duties (website design) I use Parallels to do some site testing. Otherwise, I have little reason to use Windows. I'm curious about Windows 10, but it would have to have come a LONG way to in any way make me actually want to use it.

Apple Camera, Various different trackpads, Power drivers, SSD controller, Thunderbolt. Some of the other stuff can be hunted down separately as you quite rightly mention, but even most of those are tested and signed by Apple for Windows not just grouped together with the exception of the graphics cards. Then its a case of building one easy to use package which deploys all these drivers correctly along with the software - its not a simple task and thus I don't blame them for not bothering to support 4 year old computers to be honest.

We're talking pre 2012 machines, so no SSD controllers, just intel SATA drivers needed. Intel provides the thunderbolt driver, and the power is generic. The drivers I mention arent signed by Apple, they are generic broadcomm, atheros, realtek etc packages you can grab for bluetooth, ethernet, sound, wifi etc support. Basically the ones signed by Apple on the bootcamp package are the same things repackaged. You are trying to make this sound like a bigger task than it is. The biggest effort for them would be testing and validating.

For a company the size of Apple it wouldnt have been that big a deal to support a few more years worth of devices. Devices that would have no issues running Win10. At least those determined to get win10 working on earlier machines should be okay for the most part. But the nice convenient package wont be there for them.

I think its par for the course when it comes to Apple and support of older devices, when you buy into Apple, by now you should know what to expect. Bootcamp being limited to 3 years of support seems part of their formula now.

Makes sense. But I'm sure this won't stop the people on here from whining about Apple not supporting it, calling them "greedy" and whatnot. I wish people would stop using that word. 99% of the time, it isn't used correctly, or correct in its insinuation.
Agreed. It's so stupid of people calling Apple greedy on this account. They are supporting machines of 3 years back. How is that being greedy? What could Apple possibly profit off of from supporting 3 year old hardware?

Should point out that I have successfully installed Windows 10 on my Mid-2011 27" iMac, which is not listed here. I had to reinstall the Bootcamp 5 drivers on Windows to get the mouse working properly, but everything else works fine.

Yeah and if this article listed supported Macs back from 2010 then the 2008-2009 whiners would be complaining. Hey I have a 2011 iMac i7 Quad Core and I'm not trippin'. Some of you guys need to stop trippin', because if people need to run Windows on older than 3 year old hardware then chances are those people are not gamers and a Virtual Machine will run Windows 10 perfectly, not to mention it's more convenient.

Oh, I don't know.... silly stuff like future sales?
(I know thinking past the current quarter is really, really tough for business these days, but they really should try it sometime!)

So I have a supported system. (2014 riMac) and I had an install of Win10 (legit) but it lacked some drivers... I went into Windows 10, ran Apple Software Updater, and it restarted. Now when I restart, it hangs trying to get into windows and then after a lengthy black screen, starts booting up OS X again. Repeatable. What should I do? Best course of action? I'd wipe and restart fresh but I cannot even find how to get Boot Camp 6 on the OS X side yet for setup!

Hey guys - I promise I looked through 3 pages of this thread before posting... but any ideas on how I can get windows 10 working on my late 2011 Macbook Pro 15"?
Thanks!

Just borked my perfectly working Windows 10 installation on a iMac w/Retina. Display driver won't load and of course the installer won't work in safe mode to restore the older driver. Thanks Apple.

EDIT: If anyone else encounters this problem, boot in safe mode and roll-back the video driver. I have the 295x.

Yes, but if they start losing sales from people who bought from them 4 years ago, or 5, or 6, etc... eventually it's going to start denting their numbers and worse, reputation and brand.
Okay Steve, just think about it. If you were a business owner, especially in the shoes of a big corporation you would be doing the exact same thing, even possibly being more stingy. Don't lie. No business can stay a float making sure customers who bought from them 5-10 years back have no reason to upgrade. That's not good business. That's why Microsoft is now putting out their latest OS's more frequently, to get legacy lazies off their butts so innovations can move forward.

On top of that we're talking about Apple supporting a competitor's OS on their machines. Apple is no longer in the position of "needing" to get people to buy Macs by allowing Windows to be installed as they were back in 2006. I'm not defending them but to expect them to support a competitor's latest OS to be installed on their machines more than 3 years back is expecting too much, and I would say Apple is being pretty generous about it. I would love to see what Samsung does for Apple's customers....OH WAIT. They do nothing for Apple's customers but SELL Apple parts. And Microsoft? What do they do for Apple's customers? NOTHING....but SELL us Office subscriptions.

This discussion and everyone complaining their machine isn't supported belong on everythingisterrible.com or firstworldproblems.com

Your Mac works in Boot Camp. There are three packages to choose from depending on your model. Two version of 5.1 and one of 6.0.

I've been running Windows 10 since the preview and so far the only issue I've run into was that my volume buttons on the keyboard stopped working.

Should have done this when the OS "launched" 3 days ago.

Apple doesn't need to support Windows! While I appreciate where you're coming from They are doing this because it's customer demand, not for a profit. 3 days is exemplary as I'm still waiting for driver updates for devices BUILT for Windows...

Yea, you just cost them an extra cent or two! That's going to really eat into that 99.9% profit margin. :)

All I know is that I have used up my allowable 250GB for the month and had to buy an additional 100GB for 15$. So I guess its more about ME than it is about THEM.
