These back and forth debates of "AT&T sucks" and "I don't know what you're problem is, AT&T works great" are all anecdotal. However, given the amount of press that has been given to crappy AT&T service, along with the noise about it on various social networking sites, I'd say that AT&T customers are generally more dissatisfied than Verizon or T-Mobile customers. Just do a Google search.

I didn't say all at&t customers are happy. I'm just saying I'm not having any issue and I work with people who who also have iPhones (I was the last to get one) and don't have problems. If they were complaining how bad it was, I would have never gotten one. I'm happy and that's all that matters, and what works for one person may not work for others.

Why not a iPhone you ask?
- As previously mentioned some people already have their phone that works fine for their needs, are already in a contract, or don't want to bother switching.
- AT&T sucks in the persons area
- Two independent devices = better battery life

And... I can give my daughter the touch to play games on while I'm talking to work. Try that with a single iPhone :)

The whole idea of converging everything into one device, only works well in singleton user scenarios. When you've got one family member needing a GPS, another wanting to look at photos, and another wanting to talk on the phone, a single do-it-all device is just the wrong choice.

Unless, of course, you can afford to get everyone a copy of the same device.

I just love how so many of you are pretending that the lack of a camera in the iPod Touch is a dealbreaker and you are completely dismissing the big storage upgrades. If Apple had put the camera in the iPod Touch, big storage upgrade, bluetooth and FM radio you would've still said it was a lackluster upgrade and said, "I'm pissed, Apple was gonna get my money today until I noticed that they did nothing to the iPod Touch". Get real. :p

I love how you believe your opinion is better than anyone elses. Get real

The 2G iPod Touch owners have no reason to upgrade right now so why are you all the most upset here? If someone doesn't own an iPod Touch this is a great buy for them. Too many of you geeks here think you're the only customers Apple has and needs to please.

When you are the leader of a market segment that is close to topping out, the main way forward is to provide your current user base a quality value proposition to purchase the new model. Apple has a large, and rabid, fan base. A fan base that is willing to plonk down big money in return for a product that they want. There are more people commenting on the dealbreaking camera/mike combo meaning no cash to apple. In my case, i dont need the extra capacity, but I was lookign for the mike/camera combo. my wife got me to wake her early to tell her what the release was like, but I didnt bother, as it wasnt worth it. Replacing two 32gb touches with 64gb touches would give Apple a few more dollars, 800US if I read correctly. My bank account stays happy, Apple gets nothing. Great stuff for apple.

LOL at 340 posts of mostly whine.

Every iPod refresh.

Maybe true -- but in this case most people would agree that, in particular, this Apple event was quite lame.

And you think the strategists/decision makers/management at Apple don't know this already?

Good things come to those who wait.

Actually I agree, it was pretty lame. It definitely could have been accomplished with a press release.

That being said, while I already have a Touch, a 16GB Nano that does Flip quality video for $50 more while being quite a bit smaller is a pretty attractive concept. It'll be interesting to see the reviews roll in.

They have videos "shot with the Nano" on the new product page, but I'm always skeptical of potentially doctored videos made to look better than they are.

QFT. This is a higher percentage of negatives than I've seen in a while on an official Apple product release.

I think its a little suspicious that there is no 16gb touch model, because leaving just the 8gb and from there a big jump to the 32gb, i think that the rumor they had problems with some ipods may have been the 16gb touch with video cam, its just a little nonsense to give the nano a cam wile the touch could be more productive with a cam, but i`ll wait for the touch with cam, it may have even an fm receiver too! but still im  with :apple: for the minor update to the touch!

Can you think of any reason the "camera issue" would have affected ONLY a 16GB model ipod touch?

How do you think Apple will sell you another Touch next time they update? That's right they will include a camera! Apple knows what they are doing to keep people buying.

Perhaps.

I think it's safe to assume the iPod Touch inventories of retailers will be backed up because no one will be buying them......until they too come with cameras.

Bottom line is, I have no desire to upgrade my 2gen touch now. I don't think Apple realizes how much of a leverage they are giving to competitors, like Zune by coming out with this lame "update."

Ehine is what it is, your expectations are baseless until today Apple said nothing!n

So because a bunch of people fell for the shysters Apple screwed it? Maybe Apple simply ran into an R&D road block and fell back to a backup plan. Or maybe not the point is they have upgraded the entire line and effectively packed a lot of functionality into the line up.

I just downloaded both the iTunes and the iPhone updates and have to say I'm impressed with the new functionality. For somebody new to a Nano or Touch I suspect they would be very pleased with the package these items provide.

It's interesting you think you know more about Apple's business model than they do.. A company out to increase business for themselves looks for new customers and not just sitting around wondering how can we please our existing customers. Guess what? They already have you so they don't need to keep pleasing the MR crowd to stay in business. And before you say the ever popular threat, "Well, I'll just buy a ZuneHD, guess what again, you won't because you and many of the other people here wouldn't be writing so much passionate whining if it was so easy to give up on Apple's products.
If I wasn't happy with a product release from a company I would search for other options rather than acting like my mommy didn't feed me dinner. I honestly believe less than 5% of these posters who say they were gonna plop down cash to get a new iPod Touch and now they are not. Either they are just blowing smoke or they had no intention of buying in the first place, they just wanna join in on the expected ranting we always get here on ANY product release from Apple.

Ha, it's funny some people here always say "Apple Blew it", "Apple is gonna fail at this release", "Apple has lost me and many others after this update" and what's even funnier is Apple's sales keep rising quarter after quarter, especially with the drop in the economy.:p

Are You Kidding Me No Camera In The Touch But In The Nano... Who The H**l Cares About The Nano... This Stinks, There Is No Reason Why The Touch Shouldn't Have A Camera!

I completely agree...I think iTunes and the store refresh is fantastic and is getting way under appreciated...especially really digging down into all the updates they have done on iTunes. The store is very nicely done and I think a lot easier to navigate and that was no small task. Since I have the 3G I haven't noticed all that much with the 3.1 update but the genius app function is nice. And I have to say the nano has me very intrigued. I'm just failing to see what a little camera in the Touch would have made this event that more exciting...and for all those saying they're money is going to the Zune, have a great time taking pictures with your new Zune ;)

And, Steve Jobs doing the keynote...that was a heck of a lot more important than a little camera in the Touch :apple:

Good for you but many of us don't want the camera in the first place.

Perhaps.

I think it's safe to assume the iPod Touch inventories of retailers will be backed up because no one will be buying them......until they too come with cameras.
That narrow view is your defect, the vast majority of the potential users have no desire for a camera. I actually think what will happen is the opposite of what you suggest, that is Apple will have a huge burst in sales.
Bottom line is, I have no desire to upgrade my 2gen touch now. I don't think Apple realizes how much of a leverage they are giving to competitors, like Zune by coming out with this lame "update."

What is wrong with you? Did you really expect to get exactly what you wanted from this update. For that matter what had you thinking cameras where coming - rumor sites. If so you deserve all the mental discomfort you are experiencing.

Now it is not like I don't have the image of a perfect Touch in my mind. It is just that I realize that Apple has it's own pressures and issues to deal with. Better in this situation to look at the positives, the lower price, the higher capacity and faster speeds. If these are not important to you then don't upgrade but also don't whine like a baby in a wet blanket.

Apparently the Nano sells a LOT better than the Touch. And its market sector is more competitive.

Of course I see no reason why Apple shouldn't make the Touch as competitive a product as possible. So that's why I don't get the update.

I think that there are just a lot of bitter people out there who have been trying to predict Apple's demise for years now and it's apparent Apple knows a heck of a lot more than these people writing about them.

As you can plainly see, there was a clear market and consumer interest for certain functionalities for the ipod touch line. My point is that apple screwed it by not recognizing this at all.

Again, this much higher level of negative feedback to Apple's event indicates that something was missed.

Just look at the amount of negative feedback pouring in here...and, by the way, if you check out the various online news articles covering Apple's event and scan the reader feedback forums there, it's the same picture.

Have all of you calmed down now. People on Macrumors are funny people. I mean that in a good way of course. Everybody upset now, but come next week they will be sneaking down to the apple store on their lunch break to purchase their new Nano's and Touches and will pretend like none of this ever happened. You all know you will, don't hide it.

When you go to bed tonight and wake up in the morning, you will forget all about what you were so upset about to begin with. It's that Steve Jobs sleeping dust that he will sprinkle on all the "fanboys" pillows as they slip into a deep sleep. Jobs will just have to visit a few more homes tonight, that's all - no biggie.

You all know that you will be back, you always come back.

I think what most people are missing is that Apple never promised or hinted toward a camera in the iPod Touch. People think this is an issue of when the iPhone was released and then a couple of months later they lowered price and the original iPhone owners complained and got some compensation for that...that's not going to happen no matter how many people complain. Does that mean that with enough pressure that Apple won't come out with a Touch with a camera, probably not, I mean who would have guessed an FM radio in an iPod. I don't think Apple screwed anything though and are a lot smarter than most people think. The old adage is bad press is better than no press and I think in todays guess they get the best of both worlds with bad and good press. I do love how we all become prognosticators of multi-million dollar businesses though - it is fun to fantasize...just like fantasizing about a camera in an iPod Touch for some other people....

There is a lot of very positive bits delivered today, this should be focused on.

I completely agree...I think iTunes and the store refresh is fantastic and is getting way under appreciated...especially really digging down into all the updates they have done on iTunes. The store is very nicely done and I think a lot easier to navigate and that was no small task.
I haven't had the time to go into it in depth but iTunes the App is certainly nicer and like wise the store.
Since I have the 3G I haven't noticed all that much with the 3.1 update but the genius app function is nice.
I'm the owner of an older 3G and so far it appears to be behaving better. It looks like it is speedier ( hey Snappier ). Time and usage will tell of course but I'm hoping that many bugs have been hammered flat.

And I have to say the nano has me very intrigued. I'm just failing to see what a little camera in the Touch would have made this event that more exciting...and for all those saying they're money is going to the Zune, have a great time taking pictures with your new Zune ;)
Hopefully some of the people claiming to be ready to jump to Zune will quickly realize how stupid they look in this forum. As to the idea of a camera in Touch that will likely happen in the future but frankly there is a whole bunch of other features I'd rather see in the Touch before that camera arrives.
And, Steve Jobs doing the keynote...that was a heck of a lot more important than a little camera in the Touch :apple:

Yes far more important. It was good to see him get that standing ovation.
