The dedicated graphics card in the MBP 15" basic model jumped from a 450 Radeon to a 555

What a lame update!! A small bump in internal processing is the big thing.... PLEEEASE...

They did not address any problem with adaptors, Magsafe, Battery and the lame expensive Bar.

Innovation is dead...

Apple just have different priorities. It is clear that it as turned into an iPhone company.

You can see that they are putting their resources more into software rather than hardware. The iOS11 look nice.

I thought that MacBook update was a typo to start with, they seem to have done away with the m5 and m7 and replaced them with the i5 and i7 while retaining the m3. Very strange.

And a 16GB option too

One thing I was reticent about the MacBooks was the m series chips going from an i7 MBA but this is some boost.

Decisions decisions over a MacBook and a 13" MBP now

Don't get too excited about that. This is actually really bad product renaming on intel's end. That new i5 and i7 option are still the 5w m series chips, and definitely not the MacBook Air U series i5 and i7. It's no more significant to go from m3 to i5 as it was from m3 to m5 last gen.

Can someone please explain to me the appeal of the Macbook vs. the base MBP? Is it just the "sexiness" of it being lighter and thinner?

It seems like one can get the i5 13"MBP for the same price (within $100) as the Macbook, with same 512gb HD size, same 16gb Ram, and faster CPU. My wife needs a new computer and she likes the look of the Macbook, but I am wondering if it's stupid to get her a relatively underpowered computer when I can get her a "better" MBP for the same price. Am I missing something?

Or, does the base Macbook have enough horsepower for her everyday use that I shouldn't even bother looking at i5 version? She's a pretty basic computer user (30 open tabs of chrome of blogs and who knows what notwithstanding) but I don't want to have to buy her a new computer every 4 years...

people are not seeing that the graphics is 560 that could be huge jump from 460
AMD graphics aren't that hot. If they had put a 1070 in there I'd be juiced, but AMD is meh... 460 and 560 aren't that different under the hood.

Also did anyone else notice the MacBook still has the worthless 480p FaceTime camera??

still no touch screen. wow

Of coure not, that's a major OS re-architecting that would have to occur, you don't just drop a touch mechanism on top of a UI not designed for touch behaviors ;)

There's the option of a 15" MacBook pro without touchbar... is this new or the 2015 model?

Update: seems the 2015 model.

Yeah, at this point, the ultimate MBP for me would be a top spec '17 model, no Touchbar, 32GB RAM (I mean, I have stouter GPU requirements, but that would be a terrific start :) )

Yeah, I haven't been following much with current AMD GPU options, sounds like the 560 is a modest bump. I know it's not directly comparable, but just a swag, where do you think it would fall relative to nVidia performance? 1060 maybe?

The complete lack of audience enthusiasm is hilarious. Also the fact that the MacOS segment skipped over the touchbar entirely says everything about where Apple puts that tech on its list of priorities. I know they can't drop it after only 8 months but don't be surprised if TB vanished completely in the next update.
I wished the same about butterfly keyboards, and they kept those even though they're cr*p.

What an earth do you want a higher resolution FaceTime camera for? It's for video conferencing. Images have to go over the internet. I wouldn't want the delays of uploading and downloading higher resolution while talking to you.

All the folks who bought 2016 MPBs are now furious. ...myself included.

Don't buy this one either because they'll release a new one some months from now with better specs. But don't buy that one either because the next one will have even better specs.

Stop being a size queen. If you have a need for the machine, buy it now but you can't be surprised that companies release a new product later on that's better than the past one.

You're actually complaining that they released improved products because it means yours is no longer the newest and best. You want Apple to never release a new MacBook Pro so that yours can always be the latest. That's silly.

I don't think so, I think it's a step below that for the mobile. My understanding is it's more like a 1050ti or so and a 570~1060 and 580~1070 and AMD doesn't have anything (yet) that touches the 1080 or 1080ti. But that's just my guesstimating, I'm sure someone out there has proper comparisons.

Would make me very pleased...
It's a half baked idea that should have been scrapped in design/testing phase IMO.

The fact it's still super new and went unmentioned at the developers conference is certainly quite interesting.

The whole verdict was "Let's see what they can do with it" when it came out, and now it appears the answer is becoming clear.

I have used and owned every Macbook Pro Model. I like the Lightness and Thinness of the Macbook. I can hold it with one hand, safely, something I struggled to do with the 13" and would never do with the 15" Its really nice to have in a shoulder bag, it's weight compared to even the 13" is really noticeable. For someone that walks for commutes to work, it makes all the difference.

The screen is kinda small, and it can make you squint if you don't increase the font size, but if I'm trying or doing emails it's totally fine to have a small desktop.

The 480p FaceTime camera is a JOKE!!! And a single USB-C is silly at times... but it's a super light easy to cary around pretty decent laptop.

If I where to do it again, I would DEFF get the 16gb ram model. Just so you can quick switch between users... Since a little bit of RAM is each login.

From the Apple website: "macOS High Sierra lets developers create interactive virtual reality experiences on Mac for the first time, using the new iMac with Retina 5K display, the new iMac Pro coming in late 2017, or any supported Mac paired with an external GPU."

My life is now complete. Buying a new Mac this Fall.

They rebranded the m5 and m5 to i5 and i7 in that Y series chip, so it's still roughly the same but with the Skylake-KabyLake bump... These aren't 'full' laptop i5 and i7s all of a sudden in the MB. 16GB is nice though and I have to decide between that and the ntbMBP now!
