I guess I'm not furious, just disappointed. The timing between the 2016 release and this new update just feels too close, especially since I bought my MBP in January.
Look at this way, when the time comes for you to upgrade, its gonna be really special.

Don't buy this one either because they'll release a new one some months from now with better specs. But don't buy that one either because the next one will have even better specs.

Stop being a size queen. If you have a need for the machine, buy it now but you can't be surprised that companies release a new product later on that's better than the past one.

You're actually complaining that they released improved products because it means yours is no longer the newest and best. You want Apple to never release a new MacBook Pro so that yours can always be the latest. That's silly.
You expect a yearly cycle in tech these days, but I held off the 2016 one intentionally because they released so late in the cycle for the 6th gen chips I was shocked they didn't wait a month and just include the 7th gen. So this update happened 'out of cycle' so to speak and I can see the anger for people that expect the model to last at least a year of being the 'new' one. Apple rarely puts out < 1 year refreshes but they have done it before.

Same boat. I'm not sure if the GPU speed increase is enough to justify the $300. Seems like everything else is the same.
How often do you buy a new computer? If it's pretty often, then you might want to save the $300. If you wait years and years, you might want to spend the extra $$$ to future-proof for one additional cycle.

I bought the 2016 15" MBP because my late 2008 MBP was on death's door. I couldn't have waited another 8 months. I can't imagine a typical user being able to discern a difference between this CPU/SSD/GPU update and the November release, but we'll have benchmarks soon enough.

Has anyone noticed that all the new MacBook pros on apple's website top out at 16 GB RAM? Where's the 32 GB models? Am I missing something?
Just you. It has been known and mentioned on just about every thread regarding hardware updates for a while now that Kaby Lake only supports up to 16GB of LPDDR memory. Nobody was expecting anything else unless they believed in fairies. Apple wasn't suddenly going to switch away from LPDDR just to cram more battery sucking conventional RAM in.

The general consensus at the time was not to buy. Most of us knew to wait.

General Consensus? Kaby was never a given cause the gains so small. Remember Apple got rid of the early/late monikers so its very possible that there won't be another update this year. All of you holding out for a 32GB touch screen Mac are cruising for disappointment.

Can someone please explain to me the appeal of the Macbook vs. the base MBP? Is it just the "sexiness" of it being lighter and thinner?

It seems like one can get the i5 13"MBP for the same price (within $100) as the Macbook, with same 512gb HD size, same 16gb Ram, and faster CPU. My wife needs a new computer and she likes the look of the Macbook, but I am wondering if it's stupid to get her a relatively underpowered computer when I can get her a "better" MBP for the same price. Am I missing something?

Or, does the base Macbook have enough horsepower for her everyday use that I shouldn't even bother looking at i5 version? She's a pretty basic computer user (30 open tabs of chrome of blogs and who knows what notwithstanding) but I don't want to have to buy her a new computer every 4 years...

Worst aspects of 12" Macbook are terribly shallow keyboard, tiny 12" display and one USB-C port. Make sure she can tolerate those.

I feel surprised that you don't receive any news on the timelines of new mobile processor releases.

I don't think so, I think it's a step below that for the mobile. My understanding is it's more like a 1050ti or so and a 570~1060 and 580~1070 and AMD doesn't have anything (yet) that touches the 1080 or 1080ti. But that's just my guesstimating, I'm sure someone out there has proper comparisons.

Cool, yeah, I [also] didn't factor in the mobile flavor.

I've got a '15 MBP 15" I love, my main machine for personal, office, any kind of open source dev work, and XCode/iOS dev, and while I've done a decent amount of Unity/Unreal on it, it's mostly control logic, pre-viz, etc., you know, nothing that requires much heavy lifting.

(I do have an Aorus laptop that's a _beast_ :D But it would be nice for my main Mac to be a little more capable for AR/VR work, right tool for the right job I suppose :) )

They should have released Kaby Lake MBP back in Feb/March. The MBP is now worth purchasing for those who need it, the 2016 version was a joke.

How is the 2016 version a joke if Kaby Lake is only a marginal upgrade designed to increase battery life by a little? Besides Kaby Lake, the only minor upgrades are the dedicated GPU (which still uses the same chip) and slightly faster SSD (which the Macbook Pros, even the 2015 ones, were already pretty fast to begin with).

These prices are bananas. There are three systems to choose from at $1299:
MacBook Air with 1.8 GHz Core i5
MacBook with 1.2 GHz Core m3
MBP with 2.3 GHz Core i5

You have to desperately want retina to choose the MacBook over the Air it seems. The MBP has 128GB storage vs. 256GB at that price point. Very odd and confusing pricing if you ask me.

No quad core in the 13 inch factor and price for the MacBook didn't drop? I wonder if the rumour for the 'revised' MacBook Air was fuelled heavily on 'wishful thinking'? Because the MacBook could have been a direct replacement if it were cheaper. Also a TB3 port instead of USB-C (and two, at least) would have been nice.

As an incremental update, I don't think they updated to pretty much where everyone was realistically expecting, processor and graphics wise.

I am a little disappointed on the no price point movement in the 15" range, or a non-touch version of the 15". I'm on a 2010 MBP 15" ...not sure how much longer I can hold out waiting for a non-touch 15"... :S

Oh and the prices are a bit of a kick in the teeth. As mentioned above the entry level ntbMBP has been price reduced by $200 only by halving the SSD size to 128GB; at least in the UK and Europe the BTO top end ntbMBP models I was looking at have gone up by ~ £80/€80 which is around $100, not what I was looking for.

So yay, Kabylake & RAM speed increase on the ntbMBP, boo, price increase...

(I don't know if the same is true for US prices as I don't have the old numbers to compare for the specs I was looking at like 16GB and 1TB)

Also, no change in battery size, and I wonder if the TB3 ports in the ntbMBP are now full speed or not, will have to wait for tests.

Hi everyone,

My Macbook Pro 15" with TB (2.6), 1TB SSD has been on order since the start of last week, but the delivery time has always been around 9th June. Does anyone know if I will receive a 2.6GHz model or a new 2.8? Guessing the order has been caught up in the new model release (UK).

Thanks :)

The chips are available so they put them in. There was no reason to skip the 2016 MBP and purchase this one.

I imagine you'll get the new. If you don't send it back ask for the new model.

Since this update took 9 months, this would suggest the next update will be another 9 months, so about February or March, give or take.

And they did this instead of solving the real limitations of the MBPs: only 16GiB RAM and 2TB SSD.
