Apple's Vision Pro headset can weigh almost 23 ounces (650 grams), depending on configuration, the company today confirmed.

Apple says that the Vision Pro specifically weighs between 21.2 and 22.9 ounces (600 and 650 grams) depending on which Light Seal and head band is used on the device. The separate battery weighs 12.5 ounces (353 grams). For reference, this means that an Apple Vision Pro, excluding the battery, weighs almost as much as a 12.9-inch iPad Pro, which comes in at 24 ounces (682 grams).

The weight of Apple's headset was unknown until today, but it was widely rumored to be heavy compared to competing devices. This is not necessarily the case, since while the Meta Quest 3 weighs 18.2 ounces (516 grams), the higher-end Meta Quest Pro weighs 25.5 ounces (722 grams) – substantially more than the Vision Pro. However, the Meta Quest Pro has a weighted battery pack at the back of the headset's headband to make it much less front-heavy and ostensibly improve comfort.

Pre-orders of the Vision Pro opened earlier today and the device launches in the United States on Friday, February 2.

I returned my AirPods Max because I didn't find them comfortable for more than an hour or so and they weigh 384.8 grams. I realize these devices are not the same, but they are both devices that add weight on/to your head. Best of luck at 600 and 650 grams everyone.

If there is a version 2 my guess is that its all about weight and comes in at <500 g.

I can wear APM for 8 hours with no issues. It will come down to the straps, luckily there are two included in the box.

They shoulda made the strap have a battery attachment for the back

Based on my experience with the Quest 2 this sort of helps, but really just offloads the discomfort somewhere else. Firstly you are now more heavy overall adding the battery, and you also take away the ability to comfortably lay your head back on a sofa or pillow. Although I'm not sure you can really do that anyway because even without the battery pack I always found laying back like that loosed up the straps enough where the headset was moving around a lot.

Honestly I think they just made some bad design choices, like putting a screen on the front just so people could see your eyes and using too much "premium" materials instead of just plastic. But I guess they have to justify the cost somehow.

Which basically means I was right when I said the AVP isn’t ‘heavy’ but is instead not properly weight balanced. A third party company will probably make a better strap, making one that puts the battery in the back of your head? Or just better overall.

I specifically remember reading on MacRumors last year or so before WWDC that Apple’s designers were happy the Quest Pro weighed more than the AVP since they were worried that if it was lighter, that they would need to delay it again.

That's not terrible, actually. My climbing/caving helmet + headlamp and spare weigh in around 900g, and I can wear it for a full 8-12 hours without an issue.

It's not on my face, though.

Some people say they have no problem with the weight of the Vision Pro, but when it comes to an iPhone's weight, it's too heavy and annoying 🤣

What one can carry and what one wants to carry can be vastly different. I'd rather my 13 Pro was lighter, but not enough to buy a new device. I won't buy anything heavier in the future, though.

That's actually better than what I thought it would be. Balancing is gonna be the problem.
So, after all the complaining about the weight, it now turns out the Quest Pro is even heavier. I'm laughing my a*s off. Now that the haters can no longer scream about the weight, they turn to "balancing" issues, whatever that means. Please be aware that the AVP goes on the face. It won't work if you put the device on the top of your head.

The reality is anything that you feel weighing over your head, your body will tell you that it’s uncomfortable. This the fate of Apple Vision Pro 1. People will get hyped up because it is new, but reality kicks in and you don’t want to wear it anymore. 🤷‍♂️ Maybe next release or future ones will be slimmer and lighter.

Not surprising at all.

In 15 years, we're going to look back on this much like we look at the original Newton MessagePad compared to a modern iPhone.
Excellent comparison, and way better than the other comparisons to other Apple products I’ve heard.
