Yeah at this point im waiting until September unless i find one of those half off deals. Even if 5 is not a big upgrade the price will go down on the 4s a bit
True.
I upgraded my series 3 SSSB just couple weeks ago for the cellular Alu series 4.
But I got it for $125 discount. So if the series 5 is interesting to upgrade from my 4, then I can sell my series 4 for a small loss.

The real sign for a Series 5 Apple Watch should be towards almost the last week of August, it’s usually when something ‘slips through the cracks’ with some type of hardware/software leak indicating what this new watch will be like, _if_ there will be a new watch in September. If there’s nothing really indicating by the end of August leading into that first week of September, then it’s possible there may not be a Series 5 this September when the iPhone launches.

There is not a lot of "confirmed" rumors about Apple Watch 5 tho, right? We don't even know if they will be introduced or not (they probably will). But still...

Yes, but lots of people stated that Apple Watch series 3/4 rumors started trending about a week before the event in September.
So I’m guessing it should be the same this year. If there is a new iteration, it’ll prob be like how iPhones has the S models. I doubt there will be a dramatic upgrade from the series 4, but no one really knows for sure

The Apple Watch is the one device that never has a lot of rumors, traditionally, there’s only been a few slight aesthetic rumors for this year, but nothing really beyond that. I’d say Series 5 is likely for the fall, but Apple is _very_ unpredictable and could easily push it out until spring 2020. In my personal opinion, the Apple Watch has matured enough where doesn’t need to be released every 12 months, more like every 18 months.

What would be the "must-have" feature or improvement for you to upgrade from AW4 to AW5? I really miss the default app for sleep tracking. But who knows how accurate it can be.

You ask a good question, but I’ve kind of gotten to a point where the Apple Watch really doesn’t need to add anything else at this point. Native sleep tracking would be nice, but that’s not a necessity for me to have and I generally don’t wear a watch to bed either. But if I had to choose one ‘future feature’, it would probably be some type of glucose monitoring.

{I honestly think we’re reaching a point where the Apple Watch will hit a maturity point, and it really has expanded quite a bit over the last two generations, the only thing really important moving forward is the health features.}

Yes, f.e. iPhone is a mature product, you are right that AW too (almost). Apple really tries to push health features forward. It is a really smart move because they can reach new segments and customers.

I had the same decision to make and while I could have waited on the unknown AW5, I decided to get a series 4 aluminum on sale now. Even if the 5 comes out and the 4 lowers in price, it will be close to what I paid for it. There are plenty of people selling their AW4's right now that you can get a good deal on too.

I'm going to hold on to my cash until I know whether or not Apple will release the series 5. I think it's the competition that incentivize a yearly release cycle. Apple must stay relevant, even with minor spec bumps. That's what I think, anyway.

Bolded: So you’re saying if Apple doesn’t release a Series 5 in September, they won’t be relevant? Would the Series 4 not be relevant anymore if they didn’t release a Series 5? What do you think the Apple Watch should include stay relevant?

I think it would be wise of them to release a series 5, or even an updated 4 with minor spec bumps, to keep up with competition to stay relevant. Apple does that all the time with other products. For you and me, the series 4 won’t be less of a good product if a series 5 is released, but looking at the release history of Watch and considering the competitive market I think it we’ll see the 5 in September. Just offering my thoughts.

I don’t disagree. I will say, I think Apple pretty much owns the competition at this point. The only reason I think a Series 5 doesn’t need to be released this fall, is because it’s matured so quickly and how much technology can they possibly release every single year in an Apple Watch, where as consumers are not as likely to upgrade every year. But then again, the prime time to release an Apple Watch would be the late fall, Leading into the holidays.

I also agree with you. Hard to imagine what new to add to an already superb piece of technology, maybe better CPU and battery. For my own peace of mind, I'll be waiting until September :) Getting the 4 if no release, and the 5 if it drops.

When you mention matured? What do you mean? As far as how much market it has? I mean, looking at the small frame of the AW... one would wonder how much technology can be put into it.

But as @tommy2000 mention releasing a new one this fall seems like a good idea. Keep the pressure up... I feel there is plenty of iPhone users that are without a AW. I think the time sleeping aspect will be the selling point of the Series 5, IMO. Therefore battery life is going to be superb.

I know for sure, whatever feature they add.... I won’t be upgrading anytime soon.

Technology is always moving forward. I believe Apple can just recycle parts from prior iPhone/iPad and implement that into the future watches. I think it depends on what financial gain/loss Apple is willing to take to make new version now or another year.
As far as “matured” I think it’s a point where Apple products are far ahead from other company. But from history, Apple never slows down; which is a good thing.
This is why I always kick myself because I had a stock with Apple back in high school (2004/5-ish) for a class and never thought of keeping it. At the end of that semester I gained almost 150% of what I put in.

Two things:

1.) There is only so much technology Apple can implement in to a smart watch each year, meaning, the greater changes like health features (ECG/Possibly glucose monitoring), does take time to implement before it’s ready to release. The things that app can change the most frequent in an Apple Watch every year, would be more software related changes, but is that enough for the consumers to want to upgrade their Apple Watch every year? Likely not.

2.) Consumers generally don’t upgrade their Apple Watch every year, why? It’s too expensive, and the smart watch they likely have, does everything they need it to. Unless there’s some major breakthrough with a Health feature, that would be a reason why someone might upgrade. Smart watches in general, especially with Apple, are not cheap. So there will be our reaching point where saturation is likely.

Wearables is a very popular market, but the big Takeaway from my post, is consumers don’t upgrade their Apple Watch every year, not generally when they all really look the same, unless there something major that changes.

I think the S5 is really just going to be a spec bump this year.
People said the same about the S3 over the S2. But in reality, all those minor improvements together made for a quite significant update. I’d expect something similar for S5.

{I honestly think we’re reaching a point where the Apple Watch will hit a maturity point, and it really has expanded quite a bit over the last two generations, the only thing really important moving forward is the health features.}
So much more options: Some kind of always-on display (at least for telling time), integrated cam for that odd snapshot, improvements in battery consumption (e.g. „Micro-LED“, better silicone), better audio, glucose monitoring, sleep tracking - perhaps even kinetic recharging of some kind (taking advantage of further miniaturization) ...

Lots of possibilities for the next years. Also, Apple surely will continue to prepare the Watch to be fully independent from an iPhone and become the central I/O hub and Controlling device for the rumored AR glasses. In a couple of years, wearables may become so mainstream that people will start mocking other people still sticking to that old-fashioned, huge bricks called „Smartphones“ nowadays ... ;-)

Do you really think Apple can design a watch to be worn while sleeping and still have battery power to last all day? That’s a massive jump from the previous year and I don’t see how they could get that done at this point.

i use the autosleep app and it works like a charm and barely hits my battery from what i can tell. i do swap out s0 and s2 once in a while but s2 lasts almost 2 days.

FYI Nike.com is having a sale on their Nike Series 4 watches. The GPS+Cell 40mm is $423.97 and 44MM is $448.97. If you use the promo code PLAY30 you get an extra $30 off the sale price. That's $105 (40mm) and $110 off for (44mm). That's a great deal. Their Nike sport loop bands are on sale as well. Check it out.

There is already 3rd party Sleep Tracking Apps, but I believe Apple will take it to a new level. Not sure how the battery life will be, perhaps Apple will find away to conserve the battery when the feature is on.
