There is already 3rd party Sleep Tracking Apps, but I believe Apple will take it to a new level. Not sure how the battery life will be, perhaps Apple will find away to conserve the battery when the feature is on.

I just don't see this happening yet. Of course I could be wrong, but even if they found a way to conserve battery there is no way they've figured out how to make the battery last for multiple days. The Series 4 battery actually is a little bit worse than the Series 3, so I think you are reaching a little bit to think that Apple will have a magical battery in their next watch one year later.

So much more options: Some kind of always-on display (at least for telling time), integrated cam for that odd snapshot, improvements in battery consumption (e.g. „Micro-LED“, better silicone), better audio, glucose monitoring, sleep tracking - perhaps even kinetic recharging of some kind (taking advantage of further miniaturization) ...

Sure, but my post was also referring to what would provoke consumers want upgrade to and why, things like micro-LED is not a reason for consumers to want to upgrade (Kind of like why consumers don’t even know/care the difference between LCD v.s. OLED for the XR/XS). As I mentioned before, glucose monitoring would be a tangible benefit, because that’s where the watch is leading, is all about health orientation.

The other reason you’re going to find that consumers may not upgrade annually, regardless of what the watch introduces, is because of the [price point]. It’s not a cheap device, it’s also not something that would be regularly upgraded every year, for that reason alone. But there are still a large swath of consumers who don’t own a smart watch, who likely are considering one. But as you can see, Apples marketing is about health.

Well, you mention the AW lasting a day at first... according to Apple both the Series 3 and 4 is stated to have 18 hours. The Series 5 might be the year they push that further, who knows?

My point is... Sleep Tracking might be the next phase, whether it last all day or multiple days. One could sleep with the watch.. to track their sleeping. Wake up.. put it on a charger, shower.. get dressed, eat. By the time the person it’s finished, the AW is charged.

You can do that now. The Series 4 will last about a day and a half, bit that’s all depending on what you do with it. If you workout or use the gps, or other apps, a day is about all you are getting.

I think sleep might be the next thing. But I don’t think that Apple has all of a sudden figured out how to get a days with of additional battery in a watch that has less battery power than the watch from a few years ago.

I think it’s a question of impact.

If e.g. having Micro-LED would increase battery life by a sufficient margin, people may well be tempted to upgrade and they may opt for the more battery-hungry (and by chance the more expensive) cellular variant.

Others might be attracted, if going Micro-LED would result in a thinner watch. Or maybe sleep tracking “the Apple way” would be enabled by this step.

All those upgraders or first time purchasers would not need to know about the technical reasons. All they care about is the effect of those changes.

Micro led has major advantages (i.e. much brighter over OLED, improved color gamut/higher resolution, battery efficiency standards, ect....), it’s kind a like when Apple introduced OLED, it doesn’t sell the X/XS model to the consumer, even with the core benefits of what it offers, the endgame is what Apple ever chooses to market (<—keyword) the consumer sees and understands. _That_ is what will sell the Apple Watch.

FYI Nike.com is having a sale on their Nike Series 4 watches. The GPS+Cell 40mm is $423.97 and 44MM is $448.97. If you use the promo code PLAY30 you get an extra $30 off the sale price. That's $105 (40mm) and $110 off for (44mm). That's a great deal. Their Nike sport loop bands are on sale as well. Check it out.

That’s a pretty relevant discount! Maybe a good indirect sign from Nike that Series 5 is coming...

Everything Apple does these days is a spec upgrade. So looks wise it will most likely be the same. My AW 4 is plenty fast and 44mm is more than big enough. It serves my needs. Unless Apple can find a way to get two weeks out of a charge like the Garmin, I say buy now.

I’m gonna wait now to see if they release a series 5 but it’s gonna be hard as my carrier has just restocked the s4 in stainless steel and stainless steel space grey. I’ve been waiting for that for a long time now as previously they’ve only had stock of the aluminium

If there is an Series 5 this year, I’m wondering if they will change the charging model to QI compatible and ditch the charging puck. That means you’ll be able to use any wireless charging mat and makes up for the cancelled airpower

That would be a nice addition, but I doubt the charging puck would be ultimately eliminated yet. If someone wanted to charge the Apple Watch for something being QI compatible, that would just be an alternative use if somebody wanted it. Kind of like how the iPhone XS can be charged through a third-party QI wireless charger.

i'm about 80 percent sure there will be a series 5 this year.

i didn't know the apple watch wasn't QI Compatible already?

As rumors say that 2019 iPhones will be able to function as wireless charging station, I would expect that this feature is not limited to e.g. AirPods, but would also work with an Apple Watch. The puck will probably still be superior in terms of efficiency and charging time, though.

I can't believe that if there was really going to be an Apple Watch 5 coming out in September-October more details would not have leaked out by now. Nevertheless, I'm waiting.

The only thing that has leaked is the new case materials.

I feel like this is going to be like in September 2015 when they announced Rose Gold and Gold casing instead of a new generation

I have to commend Apple on it. There’s been plenty of iPhone rumors... we have rumors regarding the 2020 iPhone and the iPhone 2019 hasn’t been announced. But the Apple Watch has been secretly tight lipped. Yet, it only means it’s not going to be any drastic changes to it.

That year, the 1st generation was released at the beginning of the year. There wasn’t a need to replicate a iPad 3 fiasco..

Or it simply means that the iPhone "leaks" are published with an intention to spread the WOM and it is just a carefully crafted marketing strategy.

I assume WOM means "Word of Mouth," which doesn't make sense to me. IMO, there is no need for iPhone leaks... the iPhone is matured as of now. Once Apple officially announce it... the iPhone will be spread through commercials and ads through award winning Creative Marketer of 2019.

And why would Apple "want" to leak rumors for 2020 iPhone, when the goal is to increase interest for the 2019... because as of now.. the way 2020 iPhone is panning out (New Design (Notch-Less), USB C, In-display Touch-ID, and more). I'm more interested in that model.

Take in the consideration, there’s nothing else to ‘leak’ about the Apple Watch. It’s Exact same design, most improvements will likely be internal or through software this year. I mean, the Apple Watch also has one main supplier through Quanta computers. There really isn’t anything to leak, and that’s how it should be.

You have a good point with that 2020 models. I don't know. But it is weird that we have a few rumors for AW5 and tons of rumors about iP11. This unbalance doesn't make any sense to me.

I noticed that a couple of the largest vendors here aren’t restocking the AW4. They probably know as little about a potential AW5 as the the rest of us, though.
