Apple Watch Demand Flattening as 42mm Models Estimated to Represent Over 80% of Orders

lol... I hate reading the posts that complain about the price. a lot of people pay far more than $399 for a watch that just tells the time.

I have 3 friends who have :apple:Watches, a coworker, and two other friends have :apple:Watches on order.

I have had people question my purchase, but my impression has been that they're irrational attitude towards it, as if because they don't see the need, they have to try to bash the product in the hopes of bringing it down.

I say they're just jealous. Most of the people who have put down the watch that I've spoken to are Android/Samsung fans.

PS. Bulky? I just don't get this.....my previous Fossil watch was way bulkier----and all it did was tell time.

You don't have to be jealous to put down someone's decision to buy something that the majority believes to be a bad buy or overpriced.

I have co-workers, too, and we have iPhones and iPads and Samsungs, etc. None of us wants one, period. It has nothing to do with jealousy. We can't think of a reason worth >$500 for getting one!

I still haven't seen anyone in public with one, either. Or any of my clients at their offices. I just think it isn't turning out to be the "hip, cool device" everyone thought it would be.

It's the same as the point of people coming online to make sure the world knows how much you do want the watch. People like giving their opinion. Just because you want/have one doesn't make your opinion of the watch any more valid than anyone else's. I mean, are you saying you'd prefer to enter an echo chamber forum of people circle yanking about a product you like?

Well said.

Expensive watches are exquisite timepieces, symbols of status, akin to Coach handbags, fine wine, etc. The Apple watch is just a gadget on your wrist.

The lack of availability also make people lose interest, like me. Wanted one very bad, but now I can wait and see how it goes.

This, I was gung ho on April 10th but but the time I finally got it 6 weeks later I was ready to cancel my order out of frustration. Apple really dropped the ball on this one.

With purchase being on-line only, there is no buffer of having/wanting to physically go to a store to get one, and going back later if they're out of the model you want.

This couples with the pent-up demand for such a thing, resulting in anyone who wants one jumping on-line first day/week/month and ordering ... not so much of the "eh, I'll hold off a bit". Big drop-off in orders can very well mean most people who want one went right ahead and ordered one. The audience is finite & motivated - what else would happen when demand goes straight to "shut up and take my money"?

Stock Will Tumble?

I would not be surprised to see the stock to take a major hit for this now... The Stock is already undervalued now I am sure it will really become undervalued.

It was a boondoggle from the start.
By normal standards, it's far from an outright flop, sure.
But Q1/1G estimates down by a third is a first in the "Steve 2.0" era.
Never happened with iPod/iPhone/iPad.
In fact, the 180° opposite occured: they couldn't keep the bloody things on the shelves.

Let this be a lesson to those that still stubbornly cling to the belief
that a by-the-book beancounter is the right type to run a company like Apple:
to impart that unique, one-of-kind irreproducible Steve Magic ....

Tim's great as a numbers guy, and that's where he belongs.
Steve's, quite literally, irreplacable, we all know that.
All Apple needs to do is find a placeholder that won't tarnish the Apple brand
and/or run the company into the ground.

Yes, yes, I know APPL's at an all-time high. I get that, believe me I do.
But one or two more "Apple Watch"-like decisions and that trend just might reverse,
practically built-in/guaranteed iPhone sales notwithstanding.

IOW, the tiny fashion accessory watches that women wear on their wrist simply has no place in the smartwatch market so I would expect the larger to become more common.

You do know that 38mm is fairly large for a women's watch, right? Or are you saying women's tastes have no place in the smartwatch market?

Slightly off topic: Clearly, Haters gonna Hate. Especially those that are secretly jealous of not having one.

On Topic: I am male and decided on the 38mm which I am rocking right now. I guess I have skinny wrists, but the 42 looked way to big on me. I think the watch will end up doing very well. After having it for a week, I am more a fan than I was before. The only two things I see holding Apple back on the watch is price and inventory. One is too much and one is not enough. Where is goldie locks and the just right spot?

How does Apple expect to sell more than a mere 15 million or so, when FAR better Apple Watches exist, a mere 1 to 2 years in the future?

I thought I was clear, but that is clearly not the case, so let me state it again. Women's "tastes" will determine the trend of future smartwatches, and what I stated is that the utility of a smartwatch which needs to be interacted with more than a watch which you only glance at 99.9% of the time will push to a larger size, just as the increased utility of the smartphone moved to being larger after dumb phones getting smaller and smaller. Remember that the iPhone with its 3.5" display was deemed huge and unwieldy by its dissenters when it first came to market and then even the 4" iPhone was deemed ridiculously small by its dissenters just a few years later. Again, trends change, and I have no idea how you read that "women's tastes have no place in the smartwatch market."

Especially those that are secretly jealous of not having one.

Jealous?!? What "jealous"??
I could buy 4 flaggin' Apple Watches right now if I wanted to.
Ever stop to think that people's dislike of something maybe might have
something to do with the thing itself and not some misplaced feelings of sour grapes?

I'd be willing to bet 100% of the people's here dislike of Apple Watch has ZERO to do with so-called "jealousy"
and EVERYTHING to do with the Apple Watch itself being an unnecessary, expensive POS.

Ahh... a watch user....do you find the digital crown useless, as the analyst says? I played with an apple watch and found it very useful and a great design, since watches have crowns.

Your impressions so far would be helpful...if you have the time! Thanks.

Hi there! Its weird at first because having used an iPhone for years you instinctively want to use your fingers on the watch display. Once you start using the Digital Crown though, it makes things much faster to go through. Ex. I like skimming through emails on my watch. If there are longer ones, it quickly becomes natural to just use the crown to scroll at your own pace while not obstructing the screen. It also spins so smoothy that it almost feels like you are using another touch surface. I have noticed though that after a workout that the crown can become a bit harder to spin, but a quick rinse of water above the crown while spinning it makes it feel as smooth as it was out of the box
Let me know if you have any other questions :D

Not true at all.

Apple's estimates have never been off by a third to the downside.

Analyst's estimates have always been wild - all over the board. And this is nothing new.

Same here. The digital crown feels like a touch surface sort of. I never use two fingers to spin it. I just use my index finger to swipe/scroll the top of it.

This is awesome news... Maybe now, Apple will:
- pare down the ultra high profit margin on these things...
- move to rev2 sooner than later
- star discounting these things in the "refurb" store sooner than later

I have more faith in the wisdom of crowds :)
