It doesn't though because it stops scalpers buying up the product and selling for more which is not good business for Apple.

As the leader of the watch is too damn high party I ask you, "WHO would honestly pay a scalper for the watch? Loads of stock will be available".

I'm glad Apple did this. Apple is trying to make it available to as many true customers as they possibly can. This should make it difficult for the few who buy at the limit and then just sell it for a profit without actually using it.

It's funny people say they want one for their family, if they raise the limit to 2, you want 3. If the limit is 3, you want 4. If 5, then you want 6.

I was all set for the Stainless Steel with a leather band. But what if gen 2 is really great?

That's not terrible reasoning or anything—past Apple products have indeed improved quite a bit from generation 1 to 2—but I'm having a hard time thinking of improvements that could plausibly be made to the Watch in 2015/16 that would actually make me (FW my personal outlook IW) feel bad for only having the original.

  • Obviously better battery life would be an improvement, but as long as Gen 1 really does last all day for me, we'd have to be talking about doubling the life to make a useful difference. I can't see that happening in a single generation. Even in two or three generations it would be surprising.
  • Lots of people (mainly runners, joggers, and hikers, I guess) really want onboard GPS, but my main fitness activity is bicycling; I already bring my iPhone with me, and it's not the slightest problem.
  • Similarly, waterproofing: I guess I'd care if I did much swimming, but I don't.
  • More health sensors: seems likely, but I can't think of one that would matter terribly to me.
  • Better screen? Camera? LED flashlight? Meh.
  • More ordinary hardware-spec (RAM, disk space, processor speed, etc.) upgrades are probably inevitable, but the recent trend for Apple products is that their usability holds up in these terms long after they've been superseded by new generations—as my trusty and only-now-growing-creaky iPad 2 and late-2007 MacBook Pro can attest.
  • New cases, styles, form factors, etc., are probably inevitable as well, but I'm just happy to have a watch that can meet a business-casual sartorial standard. I have no need to be fashion-forward.
I'm sure there are AWatch customers who would find one or more of the plausible upgrades listed above (or something else I'm not thinking of) far more attractive than I do, but at the moment I'm not seeing the big risk that my (42mm SS black-sport-band) Gen-1 Apple Watch will somehow become worthless within a few years.

Like many people, I'm on a two-year upgrade cycle for iPhones; I do the full numbers (4, 5, 6) and skip the "S"es. If the Watch follows a similar pattern of upgrades to the iPhone (though of course it might not), I think I'm comfortable upgrading phones in even-numbered years and watches in odds. (Perhaps more importantly, I'm lucky enough to be able to afford to do that.)

Comparing the US and UK Apple Watch sites, at the minute it seems only people from the US can pre-order AND reserve. Everyone else can only pre-order.

Unless, Apple update us at some point, it seems everyone outside of the US will only be able to pre-order.

No one is going to buy these watches. There will be plenty of stock at Apple stores.

As a recent magazine stated, Apple will sell millions of these simply because Apple has millions of loyalists who will buy any Apple product. I believe this simply based on the 7 billion people on the planet...surely there is 2-10 million that love Apple.

However, as the magazine continues, selling a few million is not a "win" at all for Apple. Surely Apple will spin and hype up the sales but at the end of the day, the unbiased folks out there will see this as a relative flop for Apple if they don't sell dozens of millions every year. Personally I feel the price is too steep, the battery life far too short, and honestly, what is the point? What is the value? I'm too lame to reach into my pocket and pick up my iPhone to check the alert or look at the time?

All money and style and battery arguments aside...I just don't see the point of the Apple Watch.

You can buy more than one at a time... just need to know the store people well. I'm pretty sure Apple prefers widespread use over hoarding and scalpers.

Now this pisses me off! I was going to buy two stainless steel models and surprise my fiancée with one as a wedding gift. Now I'll need to wake her up at 12:am and have her purchase it (with the money I give her of course) This is so stupid.

Really, you're not going to buy her the Gold one?!

"You can’t explain time saved. You just can’t. ..."

Tell someone that something takes two seconds versus six seconds, and they don’t really understand it as anything all that special. Six seconds seems like a trifle on paper and in theory, not much different than two seconds could ever be in the grand scheme. But let them experience two seconds compared to six seconds and it feels unbelievable. And then let them experience it again. And again. Then they might start to get it. In fact, I’m sure they will.

I think Ibrahim's right. I think you (and millions of others) will "see the point" soon enough.

Or have a friend get up and order it and still have it be a surprise.

Gary

Yeah, that's looking like the battle plan.

Lol!! Nope! No gold going on over here.

Buy for what you want/need today. Gen 2 may never arrive -or- you may not make it to the date Gen 2 shows up. A million things can happen tomorrow that will negate any future purchasing decisions. These aren't investments or priceless heirlooms. So long as you are not going to mortgage the family farm or wipe out your retirement savings, buy what you want today. Use it, enjoy it, wear it out. Decide what you'll do about any future purchases when that time arrives. My gosh -shudder- it might not even be an Apple product at that point.

Excellent. Thank you.

I'm an avid Apple enthusiast. I have multiple Apple products but I'm struggling to be excited about the Apple watch. Part of it is that the watch is fashionable but not so highly functional that it would make me use it more than I use my iPhone. The other portion is the price for entry is the price of an iPad. Add to that I haven't worn a watch in 20 years (always had phone for time and information).

One area that already concerns me about the watch is monitoring notifications and turning them all off. I couldn't imagine having it buzzing me or popping up on the screen with every text, email, phone call, heart beat (haha), tweet, or picture. I could see this as extremely distracting and would turn off some of the highest selling features of the watch. Being pinged all the time would make me frantic and I wouldn't accomplish much. haha

The only function I would truly see value is in the health stuff but it is under whelming in that arena.

As a person who hasn't worn a watch in 10 years I had the same reservation. But with me owning a Note 2, 3 and 4 for the last 3 years it made sense to by a cheap Android wear watch instead of whipping out a huge phone every time. I ended buying a LG G watch for $79 during black Friday and I don't regret it just because the price was cheap and the plain square look is my style. I personally like how the watch compliments the phone and tries not to do more than it needs to. I'm not looking for a app machine for my wrist that tries to replace my phone. The screen size is impractical.
It will be very interesting to hear what people have to say about the Apple Watch after a month of ownership. For me I still love my LG watch but it has more to do with the price I paid. After 5 months I have no issues. If I was to get a Apple watch I would definitely tone down the notifications to extend battery life. I don't want a small screened watch to replace my phone. But I probably would still buy one when the refurbs start hitting the store for $200 to $250.

This is exactly me.

You could just buy two and have them delivered on the 24th. If you don't like it, you can take it back and get a refund.

This policy is a limit on what you can reserve for in store pick up. I haven't seen a limit on buying them online on the Apple Store.

Hopefully this indicates low stock so I can make some $ off of a misguided hipster who needs an Apple watch NOW. Cha ching!

Sucks, I had a similar plan...

EDIT: The more I think about it, the more it bothers me. His and her's WATCH is such a common thing, it's crazy they're preventing a his and her's purchase.

I don't understand. Each of you can reserve one. Or you can go online and buy his and hers and it will arrive on the day of launch.

If it turns out one or both of you bought one you don't like, you can return it.

The most obnoxious product launch in history.

You've clearly never heard of Justin Bieber.

Having the limit at 2 instead of 1 would make things go a lot smoother for legit customers, and would also do a decent job at preventing scalpers from swiping stock. Especially when they also require you to provide identification.

A lot of scalpers will cower just because of that requirement.

HAHAHAHA!!!

It's amazing how Apple's marketing works. Let's make everyone think that supplies are limited.

I just cannot imagine anyone rushing out to buy something that is the SAME, EXACT THING as your iPhone, but on your wrist.

Really?? ugh... what's next... Apple iEarrings?

Umm, why can't you set up a separate pick-up time for her. It would still be a surprise when you take her to the Apple store. They never mention that you can't pay for it, just that she would have to be there to pick it up.

I doubt that would slow down scalpers. Just means they'll have to make multiple appointments over a longer period. It doesn't say that you can only ever get one, just that you can only get one at a time.
