I predict that they would miniaturize the entire NFC and bluetooth chip/circuitry necessary and embed it completely inside the Watch to make it stand-alone so it will not be dependent on an iPhone or any other device. That might not happen until iWatch 2 or iWatch 3, tho.

The watch already has Bluetooth and NFC in it. What it lacks is a data connection. Adding that would be problematic for both size and battery life.

How can Apple make a "wearable" product that u must plug in to charge physically ?

If other smart watches from other manufactures are anything to go by, i wouldn't expect Apple's one to last not much longer than a mere 2 days..

I'm very disappointed here, particularly all Apple went for are features and design, and for the most part, u'd need to pair it to a phone..

Can you make calls directly with a Bluetooth headset with this ?

On the up-shot, i do like the crown scrolling on a tiny screen, although i would have love to see a Retina display this small.

Same with every other kind of news. Thing is, if it wasn't true, there would be a report denying it.

And yes, I did take the time to notice every article said the same damn thing.

What, an article to counter that he said 'something'? Hey folks, here's a statement to confirm that Ive didn't say whatever you are implying he might have said. Use your brain.

Water resistance? or water proof?

I hope, for the sake of Apple, that this toy has a better future than the DOA google glass!

I'm no fan of Google Glass…. but IMHO, even SmartGlasses have potential in the future.

Imagine that 15 years from now, all the tech companies from Microsoft and Google to Apple and Amazon all have smart glasses. But they are way way way way way advanced than the original Google Glass. Just imagine, and dream that Apple will then be selling an "Apple iSight" ….. which is wearable customizable contact lens! It can provide you with HUD like interface, optical-zooming telescopic sight, like a bionic eye. It even has the feature to give you Infrared or night vision on demand. And of course it can do everything that Google Glass 2014 can already do. Apple iSight can give you colored brown eyes, blue eyes, red eyes for Halloween if you wish. It's all that and more. Plus it's prescription strength for those who did not have 20/20 vision to begin with.

I see potential in these wearable smart-devices. Try to keep an open mind. They have to start from scratch, and they will all have rough starts.

Here is the REAL question nobody is asking.

How much for the bands ? You know they are sold separate.

So the crappy lil' "Sport" watch that nobody wants is $350 and the real one (Midrange) is about $500

Plus a nice band , maybe $100

I think this little turd of a watch is going to be about $600 just to get one that doesn't look like total crap

PLUS ! ! ! ....You still need to carry your phone when you go for a run ...Fail

The static pressure of being under water 10M is less than what is experienced when in motion, especially powering your arms through water while swimming, even at the surface.

Aye. Which is why I avoid those meter ratings like the plague.

Remember the early iPods? They were NOT stand-along devices without also owning a Mac/PC with iTunes installed. But in modern times, my iPod Touch 5th gen can act as a stand alone product. I activated it without requiring a Mac. I download and purchase apps and music without requiring any other device. And I certainly can store and backup all my data to iCloud via WiFi, rather than being forced to synch or store backups on my iMac.

It's just a matter of time until Apple updates the Apple Watch to become a stand-alone mobile computer. Maybe generation 2 or 3.

Well you make some good points. I just cant' imagine what I do with a smart watch without augmenting my phone- I'm obviously not the target demo for this lol.

One of the biggest shortcomings has to be the screen. The very first digital watches were dark until you pressed a button activating the display and had horrible battery life. Here we are again. They need improved e-ink or something similar to start to get past battery life challenges.

I don't really understand why people are so upset about not being able to do water sports with it. The last thing I'd want to do is take a leather or magnetic band into the water and flail around with my new $350+ watch even if it was waterproof.

I've lost enough sunglasses of similar price into water to have learned my lesson.

Apple could of just not has watch straps changeable, but it looks like they are, aren't they ? I'd very very surprised if the watch strap doesn't come with it...

I mean, how can u wear it without one otherwise?

At least not including an HDMI cable with ATV made sense since it does have wi-fi.

Sorry, but battery, radio and radio antenna technology aren't advancing that fast.

LTE and WIFI transmitters require more power than any watch sized battery can supply in the near future, even with microscopic call times. Even if you wanted all the RF sent into your wrist.

Even just adding GPS would require doubling or more the battery thickness.

The included BTLE radio only has a range of 10 to 30 meters in ideal conditions. Way closer than your neighborhood cell tower.

Just because a rumour does not have counter rumours, does not make the original rumour correct.

So you say Jony didn't say that? Source? Is there someone that said it wasn't true?

I suppose you call out everyone here that discusses rumors since it's not straight from the mouth of the source.

Didn't mean to insult your hero.

I agree: reflective and transflective displays are much more practical for smartwatches. Not only to they help with battery life and provide persistence, but they're also a lot easier to read in daylight!

I am going to get this: :p

An no, you do not need to have ur phone when run. Workout app built into Apple Watch. It shows real-time stats such as time, distance, calories and pace. You just need iphone for GPS tracking and online sharing.

They have "the idea" of what a smart watch would ideally be used for but this is a loser based on initial impressions. Why?

- It's HUGE
- no battery information which means its REALLY BAD
- requires iPhone (although because it is Apple, I expect it the this kind of requirement)
- It's HUGE
- not waterproof
- Name is stupid. Apple Watch? LOL
- Oh, and "It's HUGE"

Hope they enough that they actually come out with a rev2. Other than for Apple diehards, this "Apple Watch" could be a very hard sell to most folks.

It's not huge at all. Look at people wearing it, looks comfy and light.

I was a little lukewarm on the watch but after just watching the keynote, I think I want one. I'm not sure if the novelty will wear off quickly, but it does seem pretty cool. I guess I have a few months to decide. Only concern is the watch itself seems a little thick. So we'll see...

I suspect they're mum about it, cause they hope to improve it between now and launch.
Thats ridiculous. Production for these types of products is well calculated for, you simply dont change a battery type/capacity/or any of the components at last minute. It simply doesn't happen especially for a large company like Apple. Software fixes maybe, but thats not related to the hardware that they announced.

The fact that they are launching them after the new year is likely because:
1. The iPhone is a priority for the holiday season (their best selling product as well)
2. There are numerous models of the iWatch, with numerous bands and other components. If they made only one model like Samsung then id say they would be releasing it along the iPhone
3. They have to remodel their stores accordingly to present the iWatch right.
4. The smaller the device the harder it is to manufacturer the components - everything is smaller and more complex. It also takes longer to assemble the watch unlike an iPhone or an iPad.

So if the Gold edition comes with a jewelry box, I can only assume it will cost anywhere near $600-700. If so, thanks but no thanks.

You don't plug it in. You put the connector near the back of the watch and it snaps into place with magnets.

You do not need to press the screen to activate the display

You wake the display with a simple raise of the wrist.

It's really amazing how some people are just never happy with absolutely anything any company releases. This company has obviously poured millions of dollars in R&D to come up with what it has presented today. Nothing is ever perfect, but the solutions are there ready to be improved in future releases. If you don't like it, don't buy it.

Look at Apple's history with previous products:

• iPod - people laughed, said it would be a flop
• iPhone - people laughed, said it would be a flop because of no physical keyboard
•*iPad - people laughed, said it would be a flop because it was just a giant iPhone

All massively successful products because they put their time and efforts to appealing their audience. I can guarantee you most of the people complaining about the Apple Watch will be first in line to buy one.

Remember folks, the Apple Watch will only get better from here.

" So as you retire each night, you can just lay your gold watch into its case and let it charge."

I love how he uses the word "retire". Seems appropriate for a high-end gold watch. Fancy speak lol
