You need another cup of coffee to clear the cobwebs. I know how that can be. One more time, contrary to the mindless troll comments, Apple did not make the iPhone 7 thinner. It is the same thickness as its predecessor. By removing the legacy headphone jack, they used the space to give folks a 14% larger battery, a bigger haptic engine, and added a second speaker to give us wonderful stereo sound. It also enabled them to improve the water resistance. (And yes, there are different systems for "waterproofing" phones, but this enabled Apple to use their preferred approach, which may or may not prove to be a superior system to those phones that have legacy jacks. Samsung has had some problems with its phones not holding up to claimed water resistance ratings, perhaps that is why they are rumored to be following Apple's lead in removing the headphone jack from their next flagship phone.)
You make too much sense for Macrumors.

Do you really believe this is a reason for bad sales?
I think it is the pricing. Many (on-call) employees in Germany on a business plan and smartphone every 2 years have to pay about 200 euro for iPhone 7 or 350 euros for 7 plus without really owning the phone. The free offer (1euro) from Apple is the iPhone SE. 6s is around 100 and the 6 (the one they most likely used the last two years and it is still a very good phone) around 50 euros.
Plus cheaper Android phones in decent quality for people who don't care too much about the advantages of iOS or Android.

What evidence do you have that there have been bad sales other than one analyst's estimate as to production orders? Even if accurate, we don't know what the previous production has been so this may have been a planned reduction knowing that the holiday quarter would be the strongest. Click bait really. Others have said it is on pace for an all time record quarter. Ditto the Apple Watch. One analysts comes up with a SWAG estimate that the sales have been awful and there's a ton of click bait articles based on is guess, so Tim Cook has to come out and slap him down.

Yes, I know this is a click bait headline for MR, but the good thing is iPhone sales have to be reported so we shall see in a few weeks how the sales actually went.

sure we can't even fulfill orders since launch in a small shop in Italy... don't believe theskind of news. iPhone 7 sales
are super.

I purely didn't upgrade because of the rediculous price they charge for the 7.

This is a fundamental problem outside the US in particular. The last two years has seen a very strong rise in the US dollar against every major currency in the world (25% increase on average). Apple has tried to maintain margins by boosting prices to levels that many consumers just can't take. Since Trump was elected the US dollar has moved up a further 5% and this will put more pressure on sales.

Fundamentally I think the demand is still there but it's just the price is out of whack internationally (not sure what price rises have been in the US). Smartphones are a mature market and in general that means margin compression. There have been no killer features on the newer models and older models are still very functional. I'm writing this on a 3 year old 5s and it works very well. The main reason I see for upgrades among my friends is a shattered screen. They wouldn't upgrade otherwise.

I don't think this can simply be dismissed as a non-story. There is a clear stagnation in iPhone sales and I can't see any change to this unless Apple starts to meet the market on price.

Love this. Exactly the message they need to curb Cook's arrogance and complete loss of touch with the customer base.

Hopefully more of this on the way with the hapless MBP line.

Loss of touch with the customer base? Are you in marketing? I say this because do you grasp even what that "base" is your talking about? Or do you mean the base that frequents this and other Apple related forums.

Just go over some little things called FACTS -- Apples mobile sold device base passed 1 Billion units.

Using your "smarts" how much exactly is their base - with you using that metric?

You have no idea, right?

Right.

People in these forums routinely use FUD to somehow back up their own feelings.

We get your disappointment but you hardly can speak for Apple's base.

Insert bubble burst here.

At least the headphone jack will be USB - so a standard port instead of proprietary like Apple.

Personally I'd rather have the headphone jack... it if that isn't an option - I'd rather USB over Lighting.. Have some headphones that will work out of the box.

"we" tried to warn everyone? lol best post. Now Samsung is planning to drop the headphone jack? "We" may need to warn more companies and people? Thinner? What happened to the thinner Note 7? lol drivel

I bought 3 iPhones for the kids (college and high school age) this year. They were using 5 and 5c, and having screen and audio problems. Anyway, we went for the iPhone 6s 32 GB. It was a good value, and the headphone jack was part of the reason. As students, they want to use the 3mm headphones with their iPhones and MacBooks.

Actually, I had to get a 7 for one of the kids because the ATT store near his college was all out of iPhone 6s. He really does not like using the dongle to connect with his MacBook because it's easy to lose. So, he carries 2 headphones...one for the iPhone 7 lighting connector and one for the 3mm jack on his MacBook. Honestly, I can't say I understand the logic of carrying 2 headphones rather than a headphone and dongle....but, I suspect he is not alone in doing this.

Bottom-line: He would have been just as happy with the iPhone 6s....maybe happier. I wonder if others are skipping the upgrade to the 7 or opting for the 6s as well.

Same basic design since 2014 will do that. iPhone 8 will be an impressive launch for apple.

New design and all.
And to all the people calling Samsung 7 edge a gimmick: 1,5 years later, the iPhone 8 has the same screen. Albeit they made it pricier because no one else can do this like Apple can.

Wait for CES and mobile world congress in Barcelona this January and spring to see what Apple has to offer in 2018.

It's not like they slashed production last year at this time by 30% or anything.
To be honest I'm kind of surprised the iPhone 7 did so well. Let's be honest, there are lots of phones with better specs for half the price. The iPhone 7 wasn't really stunning when it saw the light of day. They should introduce the iPhone 8 by April if they want to keep double digit market share for 2017.

And then told everyone that water damage is NOT under warranty ... some kind of approach, huh?

Common Sense and Water Resistance in Cell Phones-

You attempted to troll Apple about warranty coverage and water damage, but failed because Apple is simply following standard industry practice and common sense. Your beloved Samsung also won't cover water damage for its water resistant phones.

Apple and other manufacturers are not going to cover water damage, even if their phones have been built and certified to meet water resistant ratings. They will tell you this up front, as Apple and other cell phone manufacturers do. There is a common sense reason for this. When you present a phone that has water damage, Apple, Google, etc., have no idea if you exposed the phone to a water condition greater than its rating. For example, the iPhone 7 is certified to iP67, which means it will withstand submerging up to 1 meter for 30 minutes.

"Certified" for trolls means that it has passed testing, so reasonable people are confident that should their phone accidentally slip into the tub or get rained on, etc., they won't have any problem. It doesn't mean that you can take it diving, though many do without a problem, and not expect to potentially have a problem. Common sense again, if water damage is covered, some people would be doing things with their phones beyond their certified rating knowing that they could get a free replacement. Dishonest folks wanting a new phone near the end of their warranty period could easily expose their phone to extreme conditions like putting it through the wash. The rest of us would end up paying for that carelessness in terms of higher warranty costs, etc.

Not that this is surprising. The 7 felt more like an 6SS. Aside from camera improvements, it's pretty difficult to convince a person to upgrade from their 6S/Plus.

Shouldn't have removed the headphone jack. Sure most iPhone owners (like myself) upgraded anyway. But Android people coming to the iPhone were majorly turned off by that decision and I bet it hurt the rate at which people came to the iPhone from Android.
I highly doubt its because of the headphone jack. Its basically the same design for THREE years...people don't see a reason to upgrade. With the AirPods doing so well, people are coming around to the whole "wireless" idea. Apple had to lay the groundwork..the 7 is a placeholder for the 10th Anniversary iPhone. Mark my words: you will see more Android phones without the headphone jack next year... wireless is the future. Most flagships won't even have a headphone jack by the end of 2018.

Yup, galaxy s8 will most likely not have it.

Apple starts trends. Fingerprint scanner is another one.

Can you give me your definition of a 'troll' please? Because I read the word 'troll' a lot, not only from you but in general over here. Most of the time I read the stories people respond to as an opinion from a person. Mostly people that don't take everything Apple does for granted and are critical at some aspects are put away as a 'troll'. So I'm wondering what's a 'troll' for you.

Basically.

Apple, then Samsung. All those smaller OEM will have not choice but follow suit since everyone will be migrating to wireless. People need to gone jump on the wireless train, because it's whether we like it or not.

Tim Cook is a good guy but is unfit to lead Apple.
I agree with you. He does a lot of good things but I personally think he's not a tech lover/tech visionair. I hope they'll find someone with more charisma and visionary and he will be doing what he did in the past at Apple.

There were android phone(s) with finger print readers before Apple added them to the iPhone..
No one said Apple was first.

Apple started the trend.

What HIGH volume FLAGSHIP device introduced the general public to the fingerprint scanner? The iPhone.

Aside from us nerds on here, no one can even name a high volume flagship device that had a fingerprint scanner before the iPhone. Good luck with people knowing what the "Atrix" is.
