I’ve never understood the criticism of Siri. Sure, it doesn’t have the breadth of knowledge of Google but it never once fails to set a reminder or a timer. Directions in Apple Maps are concise and the on-device help feature genuinely useful.

Siri doesn’t support multiple languages. My phone is set to English, but I speak several languages. Last week I was in Greece, and I speak the language. So how am I supposed to say a street name? Siri doesn’t support Greek at all, and with my phone in English, how exactly am I supposed to give it directions? I had to type street names using latin characters. In this case, Siri is completely useless.

I was wondering that it was not part of regulation already and language support is reason. we ca not expect Apple or Google will support all lqanguage. Or we can expect but they will not. So room for third party.

At least Google and GPT support nearly all languages without needing any regulation.

"Expanding EU Regulations"

Translation: Yet another invented fine for US Companies, with Apple ofc being the primary target.

The EU is a ****ing joke.
You may have noticed that much of the regulation the EU introduces gets eventually adopted in many other countries as well. The reason for that is quiet simple: the rest of the world is quiet frankly fed up with American companies thinking the bs they pull in the US is something they can do everywhere else too. Europe is simply doing what the American government, especially now, is just miserably failing it: protecting people, the environment, or anything that isn't just for chasing the highest profits for investors no matter the cost.

Apple isn't being targeted because they're American, they're being targeted because they are one of the largest sources of complaints about anti-competitive behavior and abuse of market position.

Imagine if Apple and Google colluded to put a $10 per month user charge on their operating systems. Would you be powerless to refuse?
Sadly that is not the case with the ridiculous 30% fee on app purchases. That is one of those silent cartels. They did not meet and decide "Let's both take 30%!", but both of them decided not to undercut the other side, because they both want those 30%. So they eliminated competition and the EU just started to do something against that. That took a while.

If tariffs are all you have as an answer to a region’s standards in the interest of consumer choice, your country has a serious problem.

Some people are so indoctrinated by AppleSpeak, they start parroting Apple’s bad faith argument of ‘security’ before any announcements, or details of its implementation are known.

Wild how people have lost critical thinking skills.
I find the whole argument about security to be actually pretty hilarious. It heavily implies that Apple's OS is inherently insecure and fragile to the point where it all comes crumbling down just because Spotify allows people to click a link to open their website, or just because default apps can be changed by the user, or in this case; because users get to choose which voice assistant to use.

If Apple's security is so reliant on their absolute control, then they simply have a lack of security and you're indirectly arguing that iOS should remain locked-in because cheese has less holes than iOS. And at that point, maybe they simply don't deserve a place in the market.

The fourth option, kicking out all kinds of assistants and helpers, would be the best fit.

Next the EU will demand Apple allow Android apps to run on iPhones, and iPhones to run Android.
Can't these over regulated Europeans just buy an Android phone if that's what they want?

I find that Siri works fine for me, and what I ask of it.

So, your dislike of the EU run so deep that it makes you believe that Siri is a good assistant?

If objectivity came in tablets, some people would need a daily dose.

I wonder how many features will be locked and siri exclusive which will make other assistants as useless as 3rd party smart watches.

Some of us, as paying customers, expect more from a company we’ve poured a fortune into. Here’s just one example of how badly Apple has dropped the ball lately. Siri has never supported Greek but five years ago there were rumors on various sites that Greek support was coming. But according to some people here, we’re not supposed to believe rumors butonly official announcements, right? Because when Apple officially announces something, they always follow through. Sure…

Let’s talk about Apple Translate. It took them years to release a translation app, and when they finally did, it barely supported any languages. Even worse, the translations are awful compared to the competition, even for the limited set of languages they do support. Just awful! Of course, some users defend this by saying, “Apple takes longer because they want to get it right.” Seriously?

Now people like you are telling us to stop expecting better quality and more options, and just throw away our money or abandon what we already bought and move to another platform?

How about the ability to disable it full stop without affecting other services like Apple CarPlay 🤷🏻‍♂️

"this means that users in the EU will be able to set options like Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant as their default voice assistant" – maybe we can choose a "Do nothing" assistant as a workaround.

Siri may have become a financial liability. I'm guessing Apple is not just complying with the EU here, but worrying they may have started losing customers to Android because of Siri. They may have finally woken up to the reality that they'll never catch up to, let alone surpass, other AI assistants. I would expect they will do the same in the US down the line.

About 4-5 years ago, there were several job listings on LinkedIn for Greek translators and linguists to work on Siri - it wasn't just a rumour, it was official. It never came to pass, evidently. Useless!

Thanks a lot for the input!! I just looked it up and you’re absolutely right! It’s shocking how blatantly Apple ignores non English speaking countries. 😡

For those who don’t speak multiple languages, they might not even realize that Apple doesn’t even support automatic language switching.
