So no one else thinks the "high" sales are due to the increase in the number of countries available this and next week for preorders? I doubt they are producing more pre launch product to compensate for the number of added countries. Remember last year they added China for the first time as available on launch day.

More countries ordering equals less product to sell. Therefore the sellout. I suspect this is why Apple will not release the weekend sale figures this year. It will be the same or less than the 6S.

Next year will be the test. If the rumours are true and we get a substantial revision in the iPhone then the demand will be crazy. Those will be the records to beat.

I see a lot of people on Twitter who are part of the iPhone Upgrade Program that weren't able to reserve a phone, at least not the black models. One, Schiller should have said on stage that the black models would be in limited quantities at launch and two, people who are part of the iPhone Upgrade Program should get first dibs on stock.

Why? That's not part of the deal. You get it when everyone else does, why should people who don't want to be part of the Upgrade Program get first dibs? You pay a month or two more on your first iPhone, so what?

How about everyone on the IUP (including me) just not being allowed to order or get a phone? I can't wait to read that story...but Apple will never admit that they knew they had no stock for us, or that it was on purpose. Seriously though, on their own upgrade program it seems like most of us were unable to order. That is really, really pathetic. It is one thing to see shipping times slip, it's another thing entirely to NOT LET US ORDER while we watch times slip...

Yeah, it was mighty frustrating to see that I could buy a 128 GB Black Plus direct online and have it here on 9/16, then check and find that not a single store in my state had it, or the jet black either, for the iPhone Upgrade Plan Reservation.

Was a shambles here in the UK, went into an apple store the day before to ask what to do to reserve a phone on the upgrade program, all they could say was 'check the website tomorrow morning'. Website turned out to be very vague at crunch time, when i finally found out how to reserve in store the site for that was unavailable, until the model i wanted (and most others) was sold out! :(

I thought nobody would buy it with the headphone jack missing. What does Apple need to do to make people not want it so that I can have it on launch day?

Valid point but wasn't it reported that production was scaled down awhile ago? I think I remember Apple's suppliers reporting reduced profits based upon lower orders? I could be mistaken.

What model did you want?

Lol. Riiiight... they have nooooo clue how popular that beautiful iPhone 7 jet black would be. They are evilly trying to limit supply so they make less money on launch weekend. /s
But on the other hand they're the most greedy company on the planet. lol conspiracy theorists.

Well I hadn't planned on getting the new iPhone, but my wife was adamant about getting the 7 plus so I figured what the hell. We were on Next and considered the Apple iPhone Update program, but I opted not to since NEXT works for us and it's all covered in 1 bill. I did have quite a few hiccups getting the pre-orders in this morning, but I've got confirmation on both. I set the alarm for 2:45am and was ultimately completed by around 3:30am.

Last year, I had to get my wife's phone through Apple.com and mine through AT&T due to errors, this year it was opposite. I got the 7 plus 256gb in black and she got the 7 plus 256gb in rose gold. I believe both show they'll arrive around Sept 27th.

Once we get the new ones, I'm putting both of our old phones on eBay to recoup the money I had to pay AT&T to pay off the 6s's.

I was on at 3:00am but couldn't get through until 3:10am by then the delivery was 1-2 weeks. my order kept getting dropped and each time I tried the shipping dates increased until finally it was 4-6 weeks. I almost changed from Jet Black to Black but said screw it and went to Verizon to order it. The process was waaaaaay smother it worked the first time but my ship date is now 10/5. I should have gone to verizon first.

For people with really late ship dates, this is always the best way to get the new phone.

Guys woke up at 3 and tried to order the phone. Said it couldn't contact the carrier so my iPhone is reserved. I just got the email to complete the reservation but when I try to check out it keeps saying the page cannot be found. Anyone else get this issue?

So you think all the people seeing "sold out" today are just going to go buy Android phones? No, this just means more people will think about lining up at Apple Stores, or hovering around their computer hoping to get in on the next round of pre-orders when they open up. Saying "sold out" doesn't harm them right now. If this went on for a month or more, sure, but we're nowhere near that point right now.
Ever heard of an "impulse buy"? Checking site after site and seeing "sold out, available November" is a real buzz-kill and all those impulse buyers will say "Eh...my iPhone 6 or 6s is fine...I'll just keep it and save the money".

Are they going to buy Android, maybe...maybe not. Are they going to buy an iPhone 7 today? Definitely not. Business 101 -- no stock = no money.

To the people gleefully celebrating these stories about pre-orders, just stop and ask yourself why Apple would preemptively announce they won't be releasing first weekends sales figures. Companies DO NOT do that if they believe the sales numbers are going to be great.

Pre-orders "selling out" means absolutely nothing in the big scheme of things. We all know they could artificially decide to limit the early numbers, to give the impression of high demand. It's not that complicated. If sales are big, they'll let us know. If they don't want to talk numbers, there is always a reason for that, and it's not a positive one.

Sales probably won't grow YoY, and they are probably really constrained due to Jet Black low yield into November and due to their marketing that's the "hottest phone" this season.

Anyhow, I upgrade when I feel like it and it feels good coming from iPhone 6 to 7 - finally "just acceptable" level of upgrades for me. (iPhone 6S was not enough improvement from a 6 last year)

Day 1 pre-orders aren't exactly impulse buys though. Anyone trying to order one today is probably all in on this thing.

I was actually surprised this morning. I attempted to purchase by Paid In Full the Black AT&T 128GB during the wee hours, but kept running into issues with Apple verifying account information against AT&T. Just said it was unable to contact AT&T and would bump me back to a different page.

So this morning I tried again at 8 am and went through for pickup on 9/16 at our local Apple store. I did not expect them to have any available for 9/16.

From what I've read, ATT choked and was down for like 40 minutes.

Definitely not true. People still excited from the dog-and-pony show, who were on the fence before, may want one now, but if you have to wait weeks to a month, the excitement wears off.

FWIW, I'm an impulse buyer. I got one, but if i'm denied a 09/16 date (in time for me to use on vacation), then I return it and keep using my iPhone 6. I'm happy doing either. THAT's an impulse buyer.

I'm beginning to think that the Note 7 issue really had a impact here. I hate to see competition go out like this. Competition is what makes our phones great.
