I see a lot of people on Twitter who are part of the iPhone Upgrade Program that weren't able to reserve a phone
It looks like upgrade customers were limited to first day stock at whatever store they could get to, and even right when the store opened, they didn't have the model I wanted in any color. And there was no other option to reserve a place in line -- shipping times were slipping and we were left at the back of the line with no way to order a phone. The claim that we could upgrade every year seems to have been a pretty hollow one. Apple should have prioritized these customers but instead they seem to have forgotten about them. If Apple doesn't come up with a fix and apology really soon, I doubt many of us will be signing up for Apple's upgrade program again.
No company is going to intentionally limit supply to create some sort of artificial demand. Mostly because they can't assume potential customers won't buy something else if what they want isn't available. Not everyone is so tied up into the Apple ecosystem that they'll wait months to get the new iPhone without ever considering something else.
When's the embargo lift for the reviews? Wednesday?
I created a thread about this to share our grief and get an idea of how many people new to the program were able to order right away vs those of us trying to upgrade. I was upgrading and my girlfriend was signing up and she got hers 45 minutes after launch and I had no avaibility 1 minute after launch.....very tellingIt looks like upgrade customers were limited to first day stock at whatever store they could get to, and even right when the store opened, they didn't have the model I wanted in any color. Except, this year resale values have slipped significantlyWhat I have learned: It is still better to outright buy your phone.
To the people gleefully celebrating these stories about pre-orders, just stop and ask yourself why Apple would preemptively announce they won't be releasing first weekends sales figures. Companies DO NOT do that if they believe the sales numbers are going to be great.
Pre-orders "selling out" means absolutely nothing in the big scheme of things. We all know they could artificially decide to limit the early numbers, to give the impression of high demand. It's not that complicated. If sales are big, they'll let us know. If they don't want to talk numbers, there is always a reason for that, and it's not a positive one.
Odd about stock running out. I was able to reserve a 128gb iPhone 7 for pickup near my local store on launch day well after they supposedly suspended in-store pick up. I really didn't want to, but my iPhone 6 is having charging issues so the timing worked out.
I see a lot of people on Twitter who are part of the iPhone Upgrade Program that weren't able to reserve a phone, at least not the black models. One, Schiller should have said on stage that the black models would be in limited quantities at launch and two, people who are part of the iPhone Upgrade Program should get first dibs on stock.
Yeah, it was mighty frustrating to see that I could buy a 128 GB Black Plus direct online and have it here on 9/16, then check and find that not a single store in my state had it, or the jet black either, for the iPhone Upgrade Plan Reservation.
*Hopefully* it won't be too hard to reserve one in the days following launch. Though Jet Black will probably be the hardest to snag.Yeah, or at least let us ship to the store. If the store doesn't have stock, we can't get it shipped to us, so we're screwed. I could've easily gotten the phone I wanted shipped to me on launch day but now I have no idea when I'll get it bc my store didn't have it and I'm on the upgrade plan.
Kinda depends on your carrier. At least where I live, AT&T and Verizon are safe bets. Don't waste your time if you're on T-Mobile-- they'll have drastically fewer units (disproportionately fewer, I'd say-- even though the AT&T is the exact same device with a different included SIM).You can still wake up Friday morning and purchase to pick up in store when they receive their stock that's always been a good bet for me if I miss the preorder.
